Book excerpt: Nous présentons une approche de reconnaissance d'écriture manuscrite à partir des champs de Markov cachés et fondée sur une analyse entièrement bidimensionelle de l'écriture. Son originalité réside dans la combinaison d'une analyse fenêtrée de l'image, d'une modélisation markovienne et dans la mise en oeuvre de la programmation dynamique 2D qui permet un décodage rapide et optimal des champs de Markov. Un aspect important de ces travaux est la méthodologie de développement employée qui est centrée sur l'évaluation systématique des apports algorithmiques et des paramètres utilisés. Ces algorithmes sont en partie empruntés aux techniques utilisées dans le domaine de la reconnaissance de la parole et sont très génériques. L'approche proposée est validée sur deux applications corréspondant à des bases de données standard et librement disponibles. L'application de cette méthode extrêmement générique à une tâche de reconnaissance de chiffres manuscrits a permis d'obtenir des résultats comparables à ceux de l'état de l'art. L'application à une tâche de reconnaissance de mots manuscrits a permis de confimer que l'extension de cette approche à des tâches plus complexes était naturelle. L'ensemble de cette recherche a démontré la validité de l'approche développée qui apparaît comme candidate au statut d'approche standard à plusieurs problèmes de vision. En outre, elle ouvre la voie à de très nombreux développements concernant la tâche de traitement de l'écriture manuscrite et des améliorations significatives pourraient encore être apportées en recourant à d'autres principes issus du traitement de la parole et du langage. D'autres tâches comme la segmentation d'images devraient tirer avantage de la robustesse et de la faculté d'apprentissage de la modélisation que nous proposons.

Book excerpt: Dans le cadre d'un système de reconnaissance mono-scripteur, notre travail concerne les traitements morphologiques des mots manuscrits. Son objectif principal est de montrer que ces traitements sont réalisables, sans limiter le vocabulaire du scripteur, à partir d'un ensemble réduit de formes de mots connues. Les traitements envisages constituent une pré-reconnaissance de la forme globale des mots: ils doivent délimiter l'ensemble des mots candidats traite par des analyses ultérieures. On sélectionne, d'abord, des séquences fréquentes de lettres (ou n-grammes), pour constituer l'ensemble des n-grammes de référence permettant de recouvrir tous les mots du vocabulaire utilisé. Cette sélection, qui minimise le nombre de mots d'apprentissage, se prête bien au traitement de grands vocabulaires. Les analyses des traces des mots portent sur leur forme globale, à l'aide d'approximations appelées profils. On détermine les profils des n-grammes de référence par segmentation des profils des mots d'apprentissage. Une première méthode de pré-reconnaissance s'appuie sur une partition du vocabulaire regroupant les mots qui, pour le scripteur donne, ont de fortes chances de se ressembler. On associe, à chaque classe, un profil prototype en vue de la reconnaissance. La trop grande variabilité des profils nous a incités à élaborer une nouvelle méthode, évitant de synthétiser ces prototypes. Elle consiste à rechercher directement les profils des n-grammes de référence qui correspondent à telle portion du profil du mot inconnu. Cela permet d'ordonner les mots du vocabulaire pour constituer l'ensemble candidat; un mot donné sera d'autant mieux place que les n-grammes qui le constituent et leurs emplacements sont compatibles avec les correspondances trouvées. Cette nouvelle méthode donne des résultats satisfaisants. Des vocabulaires étendus peuvent être traités avec des listes réduites de mots d'apprentissage.

Pacific salmon fisheries, owned and managed by Aboriginal peoples, were transformed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by commercial and sport fisheries backed by the Canadian state and its law. Through detailed case studies of the conflicts over fish weirs on the Cowichan and Babine rivers, Douglas Harris describes the evolving legal apparatus that dispossessed Aboriginal peoples of their fisheries. Building upon themes developed in literatures on state law and local custom, and law and colonialism, he examines the contested nature of the colonial encounter on the scale of a river. In doing so, Harris reveals the many divisions both within and between government departments, local settler societies, and Aboriginal communities. Drawing on government records, statute books, case reports, newspapers, missionary papers and a secondary anthropological literature to explore the roots of the continuing conflict over the salmon fishery, Harris has produced a superb, and timely, legal and historical study of law as contested terrain in the legal capture of Aboriginal salmon fisheries in British Columbia.
