Book excerpt: The Holy Spirit is the principal agent of the mission to evangelize in the world of the present. However, sometimes little is understood about the foundations of the Churchs mission and evangelization in relation to the Holy Spirit. This is a book intended to articulate, clarify and refine the understanding of this vital relationship. In this way, the call of the Church to be faithful and discerning of her mission may always be lived inspired by the light of the undying fire, the Holy Spirit.

Book excerpt: This is the annotated edition including the rare biographical essay by Edwin E. Slosson called "H. G. Wells - A Major Prophet Of His Time". Once more Mr. Wells doubts whether the world can save itself; once more he invents a Redeemer to endorse his incorrigible millennial hope. The Undying Fire depicts man's plight in the physical universe with so vivid an imagery and so moving an eloquence that it properly belongs in the line of the Browne-Stevenson tradition. At the same time it fitfully approaches so near to the wise disillusion of Mr. Russell that its very fallings-short reinforce the lesson that there is salvation for us neither in Conscious Control, nor in Education, nor in faith in the Undying Fire of intuition of an organizing God at work in the hearts of men to make for orderly righteousness, nor in any hope-breeding mirage this newest anthropomorphic deity may dangle on the horizon of the desert of reality; but only in " the unflinching perception of our true place " in an indifferent universe. This is the only truth the knowledge off which can make us free. That Mr. Wells should perceive this truth, flinch, and then rest his eyes upon the old Utopian horizon, is a symptom of the recrudescence, with a special virulence, of his spiritual malady.

Book excerpt: Think of the beliefs which you hold most dear. How much suffering could you take before you gave them up? It’s a question at heart of the Old Testament’s Book of Job. And in "The Undying Fire", H.G. Wells writes his own version. The action takes place in a private school in England. The headmaster, Job Huss, is a principled man with an unshakable faith in the human spirit. But his principles are tested by a series of horrible events, including the death of his son in WW1. A novel of ideas, "The Undying Fire" is Wells at his most thought-provoking. It reveals yet another side to the author. If you only know him for his science fiction, it’s well worth exploring. H.G. Wells (1866–1946) was an English author often called the "father of science fiction". His work popularised some of the genre’s most abiding concepts, such as time travel and parallel universes, while also exploring social issues of the day. Among his most famous books are "The Time Machine", "The Island of Doctor Moreau", "The Invisible Man" and "The First Men in the Moon". Wells was also one of the first writers to imagine an alien invasion. In "The War of the Worlds" he depicts a devastating attack by Martians, who stalk the earth in huge metal tripods. Orson Welles famously created an American radio version in the 1930s, panicking some listeners who thought it was a real news bulletin. The book has been adapted for the screen many times, including a movie starring Tom Cruise and a BBC television series.

That's his key blunder. Any doctor could tell him, as I could have told him after my first year's practice, that telling the truth is the very last triumph of the human mind. Hardly any of my patients tell the truth -- ever. It isn't only that they haven't a tithe of the critical ability and detachment necessary, they haven't any real desire to tell the truth. They want to produce effects. Human beings are artistic still; they aren't beginning to be scientific. Either they minimize or they exaggerate. We all do. If I saw a cat run over outside and I came in here to tell you about it, I should certainly touch up the story, make it more dramatic, hurt the cat more, make the dray bigger and so on. I should want to justify my telling the story. Put a woman in that chair there, tell her to close her eyes and feel odd, and she '11 feel odd right enough; tell her to produce words and sentences that she finds in her head and she'll produce them; give her half a hint that it comes from eastern Asia and the stuff will begin to correspond to her ideas of pigeon English. It isn't that she is cunningly and elaborately deceiving you. It is that she wants to come up to your expectation. You are focussing your interest on her, and all human beings like to have interest focussed on them, Bo long as it isn't too hostile. She'll cling to that interest all she knows how. She'll cling instinctively. Most of these mediums never held the attention of a roomful of people in their lives nntil they found out this way of doing it. . . . What can you expect?" Dr. Barrack cleared his throat. "But all that's beside the question," he said. "Don't think that because I reject all this spook stuff, I'm setting up any finality for the science we have...

Download or read book Vestal Fire written by Stephen J. Pyne and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2012-04-01 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen Pyne has been described as having a consciousness "composed of equal parts historian, ecologist, philosopher, critic, poet, and sociologist." At this time in history when many people are trying to understand their true relationship with the natural environment, this book offers a remarkable contribution--breathtaking in the scope of its research and exhilarating to read. Pyne takes the reader on a journey through time, exploring the terrain of Europe and the uses and abuses of its lands as well as, through migration and conquest, many parts of the rest of the world. Whether he is discussing the Mediterranean region, Russia, Scandinavia, the British Isles, central Europe, or colonized islands; whether he is considering the impact of agriculture, forestry, or Enlightenment thinking, the author brings an unmatched insight to his subject. Vestal Fire takes its title from Vesta, Roman goddess of the hearth and keeper of the sacred fire on Mount Olympus. But the book's title also suggests the strengths and limitations of Europe's peculiar conception of fire, and through fire, of its relationship to nature. Between the untamed fire of the wilderness and the tended fire of the hearth lies a never-ending dialectic in which human beings struggle to control natural forces and processes that in fact can sometimes be directed but never wholly dominated or contained.

Book Earth Observation of Wildland Fires in Mediterranean Ecosystems

Download or read book Earth Observation of Wildland Fires in Mediterranean Ecosystems written by Emilio Chuvieco and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-25 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wildland fires are becoming one of the most critical environmental factors affecting a wide range of ecosystems worldwide. In Mediterranean ecosystems (including also South-Africa, California, parts of Chile and Australia), wildland fires are recurrent phenomena every summer, following the seasonal drought. As a result of changes in traditional land use practices, and the impact of recent climate warming, fires have more negative impacts in the last years, threatening lives, socio-economic and ecological values. The book describes the ecological context of fires in the Mediterranean ecosystems, and provides methods to observe fire danger conditions and fire impacts using Earth Observation and Geographic Information System technologies.

Book Unbelief in Interwar Literary Culture

Download or read book Unbelief in Interwar Literary Culture written by Suzanne Hobson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-31 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a new account of the relationship between literary and secularist scenes of writing in interwar Britain. Organized secularism has sometimes been seen as a phenomenon that lived and died with the nineteenth century. But associations such as the National Secular Society and the Rationalist Press Association survived into the twentieth and found new purpose in the promotion and publishing of serious literature. This book assembles a group of literary figures whose work was recommended as being of particular interest to the unbelieving readership targeted by these organisations. Some, including Vernon Lee, H.G. Wells, Naomi Mitchison, and K.S. Bhat, were members or friends of the R.P.A.; others, such as Mary Butts, were sceptical but nonetheless registered its importance in their work; a third group, including D.H. Lawrence and George Moore, wrote in ways seen as sympathetic to the Rationalist cause. All of these writers produced fiction that was experimental in form and, though few of them could be described as modernist, they shared with modernist writers a will to innovate. This book explores how Rationalist ideas were adapted and transformed by these experiments, focusing in particular on the modifications required to accommodate the strong mode of unbelief associated with British secularism to the notional mode of belief usually solicited by fiction. Whereas modernism is often understood as the literature for a secular age, Unbelief in Interwar Literary Culture looks elsewhere to find a literature that draws more directly on secularism for its aesthetics and its ethics.
