Download or read book Intersections between violence against children and violence against women global research priorities written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is growing global recognition of the intersections between violence against women and violence against children. The current evidence shows intersections between intimate partner violence against women and violence against children by parents or caregivers, but limited evidence is available on the links between other forms of violence against women and violence against children. Both violence against women by their (male) intimate partners and violence against children by parents or caregivers are widespread globally. This report describes the process used to determine the priorities for research on the intersections between violence against children and violence against women, and the top 10 research questions identified.

Download or read book WHO recommendation on routine antibiotic prophylaxis for women undergoing operative vaginal birth written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2021-06-18 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Operative vaginal birth” is the term used to describe delivery of the fetal head assisted by either vacuum extractor or forceps. The Guideline Development Group noted that the available evidence, from highincome countries, strongly supports the use of a single dose of intravenous amoxicillin (1 g) and clavulanic acid (200 mg) administered as soon as possible after birth and no more than 6 hours after birth. The effects of other antibiotics and routes of administration for this indication are unknown. The Guideline Development Group recognized that intravenous amoxicillin and clavulanic acid may not be readily available or feasible to use in resource-limited settings and suggested that where this combination is not available, providers should consider the use of an appropriate class of antibiotics with similar spectrum of activity, based on local antimicrobial resistance patterns, safety profile (including allergies), the clinician’s experience with that class of antibiotics, availability and cost. The risk of postpartum infections and side-effects of antibiotics should be discussed with all women undergoing operative vaginal birth at the earliest time possible before or after birth. This recommendation was based on agreement by the Guideline Development Group that the improved health outcomes for women were clinically significant and outweighed the potential effects on emerging antimicrobial resistance.
Download or read book WHO recommendation on vaginal preparation with antiseptic agents for women undergoing caesarean section written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2021-06-18 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the evidence on vaginal preparation before caesarean section was largely derived from trials using povidone-iodine, benefit was demonstrated overall for any antiseptic (either povidone-iodine or chlorhexidine gluconate) versus no antiseptic. Included trials used varying concentrations of chlorhexidine gluconate (0.05% to 0.25%) or povidone-iodine (1% to 10%), and the base (aqueous or alcohol) was not described. However, the Guideline Development Group agreed that alcohol-based antiseptic solutions should not be used for vaginal preparation because of concerns around irritation of mucosa. This recommendation pertains to all women undergoing caesarean section regardless of their baseline risk of infectious morbidity following surgery (i.e. for caesarean section in women before or during labour, and women with intact or ruptured membranes). Whilst available trials were not clear on the timing of vaginal preparation relative to the caesarean section, the Guideline Development Group suggested that vaginal preparation should be performed as close to the start of caesarean section as possible (e.g. directly following preoperative urinary bladder catheterization) to minimize the woman’s discomfort.
Download or read book WHO recommendations on choice of antiseptic agent and method of application for preoperative skin preparation for caesarean section written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2021-06-18 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was a lack of evidence to recommend a specific concentration of chlorhexidine gluconate; however, most trials included used 2% chlorhexidine gluconate in 70% alcohol. Maternal allergy to alcohol-based chlorhexidine gluconate must be excluded before surgery. In women with no previous history of allergy to alcohol-based chlorhexidine gluconate, it should be noted that chlorhexidine gluconate can cause skin irritation. A standard preoperative skin preparation technique that is appropriate for the intended skin incision must be followed. As alcohol is highly flammable, alcohol-based antiseptic preparations may ignite if used in the presence of diathermy, and they must be allowed to dry by evaporation. It is advisable to ensure that the drapes are not saturated with alcohol or that the alcohol-based solution has not formed a pool underneath the woman before starting surgery. Particular care should be taken at emergency caesarean section. Where chlorhexidine gluconate is not available, other antiseptic agent such as povidone-iodine can be considered a suitable antiseptic agent for preoperative skin preparation, although it is not as effective as alcohol-based chlorhexidine gluconate. The Guideline Development Group noted that the current recommendation is consistent with the 2016 WHO global guidelines on the prevention of surgical site infection, which recommends chlorhexidine gluconate alcohol-based antiseptic solutions for surgical site skin preparation in individuals undergoing surgical procedures.
