Book Underwood of Korea

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Underwood of Korea: Being an Intimate Record of the Life and Work of the Rev. H. G. Underwood, D.D., LL. D., For Thirty-One Years a Missionary of the Presbyterian Board in Korea As the writer has proceeded with this delineation it has seemed to grow more and more Clear that the one salient feature, the one dominant characteristic of the whole life, was love; a great boundless overwhelming love for God and man which knew no narrow limits of sect, or race, or place, or time. This it was that drew so many hearts to him in loving pers'onal devotion; it was such a love which carried him along, like a torch of fire, as he was Called, through his whole career. With faith and hope he was wonderfully gifted, but the love that was the essence of his being was the greatest gift of all. If, in some small degree, the study of this character and of his missionary experiences shall be of help to the readers, the aim Of the writer will be attained. Book John Charles McQuaid

Download or read book John Charles McQuaid written by John Cooney and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth study of the most significant Irish clergyman in the history of the state For three decades, 1940-72, as Archbishop of Dublin and Primate of Ireland, John Charles McQuaid imposed his iron will on Irish politicians and instilled fear among his clergy and laity. No other churchman amassed the religious, political and social power which he exercised with unscrupulous severity. An admirer of the FBI's J. Edgar Hoover, Archbishop McQuaid built up a vigilante system that spied on politicians and priests, workers and students, doctors and lawyers, nuns and nurses, soldiers and trade unionists. There was no room for dissent when John Charles spoke in the name of Jesus Christ. This power was used to build up a Catholic-dominated state in which Protestants, Jews and feminists were not welcome.

Download or read book Christianity in Korea written by Robert E. Buswell, Jr. and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2007-05-31 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the significance of Korea in world Christianity and the crucial role Christianity plays in contemporary Korean religious life, the tradition has been little studied in the West. Christianity in Korea seeks to fill this lacuna by providing a wide-ranging overview of the growth and development of Korean Christianity and the implications that development has had for Korean politics, interreligious dialogue, and gender and social issues. The volume begins with an accessibly written overview that traces in broad outline the history and development of Christianity on the peninsula. This is followed by chapters on broad themes, such as the survival of early Korean Catholics in a Neo-Confucian society, relations between Christian churches and colonial authorities during the Japanese occupation, premillennialism, and the theological significance of the division and prospective reunification of Korea. Others look in more detail at individuals and movements, including the story of the female martyr Kollumba Kang Wansuk; the influence of Presbyterianism on the renowned nationalist Ahn Changho; the sociopolitical and theological background of the Minjung Protestant Movement; and the success and challenges of Evangelical Protestantism in Korea. The book concludes with a discussion of how best to encourage a rapprochement between Buddhism and Christianity in Korea.
