Book Advances in monitoring the economy

Download or read book Advances in monitoring the economy written by Rene Segers and published by Rozenberg Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monitoring involves the collection, analysis and evaluation of information over time. For many professionals, monitoring is a central aspect of their work. For example, policy- makers closely watch the e®ects of their current policies to set the right course for reform. Likewise, physicians monitor the well-being of their patients to adjust their treatments when necessary. In business, n̄ancial investors monitor stock prices and interest rates to optimally time their investments, while marketing managers watch their customers' needs and wants to frame their marketing e®orts. The above examples illustrate that monitoring is crucial in many disciplines to make the right decisions at the right moment. For this reason, there has always been a need for improved monitoring methods. With the advent of increasingly powerful computers and advanced analytical techniques, monitoring systems can nowadays process large amounts of information and have become fully automated where desired. A large body of moni- toring methods originate from academics. Especially during the past four decades, many insights from various ēlds such as economics, statistics, psychometrics and econometrics found their way into everyday monitoring practice. With the overwhelming availability of information in some cases, but also the intrinsic lack of information in other cases, the area is continuously faced with new and highly relevant research challenges. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the development of new monitoring methods by o®ering potential solutions to some of these challenges. The challenges studied in this thesis arise from all three aspects of monitoring, that is from the collection, the analysis as well as from the evaluation of information.

Book The Structure of Healthy Life Determinants

Download or read book The Structure of Healthy Life Determinants written by Tanji Hoshi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first one to examine the cause and effect of elderly people’s healthy life expectancy, providing models that are easy to understand. The novel point is the success achieved in constructing a single structural model of cause and effect of healthy life expectancy. In the final models of the authors’ studies, it was possible to clearly point out that it is not the case that lifestyle habits including an ideal diet directly provide for healthy life expectancy. This book is made up of published studies based on scientific evidence, using a vast amount of data based on about 8,000 in-home elderly people tracked longitudinally from 3 to 6 years, three times in all including baseline research, in a specific region of Japan. Therefore, health policy makers will be able to use this book as scientific evidence for creating area programs to promote good health that are focused on healthy longevity as the central issue. Academic researchers whose special fields are mainly public health will be able to learn both theory and practice to structurally analyze cause and effect of health factors.

Book Essays on Consumer Search and Interlocking Directorates

Download or read book Essays on Consumer Search and Interlocking Directorates written by Silva Deželan and published by Rozenberg Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information is crucial to make good decisions, but obtaining and providing information often comes at a cost. Consumers and firms both need to balance these costs and benefits of obtaining and providing information in order to make the best decisions. The research in this thesis investigates several questions that pertain to the acquisition and provision of information. In the first part of this thesis it is assumed that consumers are not fully informed about the prices or availability of a product they want to buy. Consumers can search for information, but this comes at a cost. At the same time, shops can influence these costs. In the first two studies in this part, shops have the possibility to advertise. An advertisement provides information to consumers and reduces the search costs. We investigate, among other things, the pricing behavior of shops and the relation between search and advertising. The third study in this part of the thesis considers the location choice of shops. Locating together in a shopping mall reduces the search costs of consumers. This increases the competition between shops and lowers the prices, but we show that at the same time the sales volume increases. The total effect of locating together on profits is generally positive. The second part of this thesis considers director ties (also named interlocks). A director who has several directorships in different firms can serve as an information bridge between the different firms. At the same time, interlocking directors are busy and form a homogenous group. Data from the Netherlands show that in The Netherlands the positive information providing effect of interlocks is outweighed by a negative busyness and homogenous group effect.

Book Maintenance models for systems subject to measurable deterioration

Download or read book Maintenance models for systems subject to measurable deterioration written by Robin Pieter Nicolai and published by Rozenberg Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complex engineering systems such as bridges, roads, flood defence structures, and power pylons play an important role in our society. Unfortunately such systems are subject to deterioration, meaning that in course of time their condition falls from higher to lower, and possibly even to unacceptable, levels. Maintenance actions such as inspection, local repair and replacement should be done to retain such systems in or restore them to acceptable operating conditions. After all, the economic consequences of malfunctioning infrastructure systems can be huge. In the life-cycle management of engineering systems, the decisions regarding the timing and the type of maintenance depend on the temporal uncertainty associated with the deterioration. Hence it is of importance to model this uncertainty. In the literature, deterioration models based on Brownian motion and gamma process have had much attention, but a thorough comparison of these models lacks. In this thesis both models are compared on several aspects, both in a theoretical as well as in an empirical setting. Moreover, they are compared with physical process models, which can capture structural insights into the underlying process. For the latter a new framework is developed to draw inference. Next, models for imperfect maintenance are investigated. Finally, a review is given for systems consisting of multiple components.

Book Come Close and Co create

Download or read book Come Close and Co create written by Sandra Phlippen and published by Rozenberg Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Access to relevant external knowledge is crucial for a firms' competitiveness in innovation-driven industries. This thesis focuses on how different forms of proximity affect a firm's ability to access such knowledge. We consider the influence of being co-located in space, of being embedded in a network, and of being active in similar knowledge domains. By integrating these three proximity perspectives, we contribute to various disciplines such as economic geography, organizational sociology and innovation studies. Further, we investigate the make, buy or ally strategies that pharmaceutical firms employ to maximize the probability of innovation (finding new drugs). Our findings suggest that firms employ multiple governance structures simultaneously, even when targeting similar innovations. These insights contribute to our understanding of the boundaries of the firm.

Book Individuele en Sociale Beslissingen Bij Onzekerheid

Download or read book Individuele en Sociale Beslissingen Bij Onzekerheid written by Stefan Tobias Trautmann and published by Rozenberg Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most decisions we have to choose between options that involve some uncertainty about their outcomes and their effect on our well-being. Casual observation and carefully controlled studies suggest that, in making these decisions, we often deviate from the benchmark of expected income maximization. This should not come as a surprise. Our well-being is affected by many factors, and the outside observer does not know the importance of various dimensions of the outcome to the decision maker. Even if goals are well defined, it is far from obvious that we succeed in choosing what is best for us. The psychological literature has shown deviations from optimal behavior in simple decision tasks, and we may expect similar deviations to occur in more complex real life problems. In real life situations, however, experience and market interaction will help to restrain suboptimal behavior. This thesis examines deviations from expected income maximization in situations involving uncertainty. We focus on deviations generated by social factors.

Book Social influences on individual decision making processes

Download or read book Social influences on individual decision making processes written by Ferdinand Vieider and published by Rozenberg Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus of this thesis is to combine the multiple findings from social psychology and apply them with an economic approach to decision making. To this purpose, we investigate accountability and its interaction with market mechanisms, more specifically real incentives in experimental settings. This PhD thesis is structured as follows. Chapter 2 studies the effect of accountability on ambiguity aversion-the preference for known over normatively equivalent unknown probabilities. Chapter 3 follows up on the ambiguity aversion issue by studying preference reversals under ambiguity. Chapter 4 examines the influence of accountability on risk attitude. Chapter 5 is of a methodological nature. We separate accountability and incentives, and find several effects. Accountability is found to reduce preference reversals between frames, for which incentives have no effect. Incentives on the other hand are found to reduce risk seeking for losses, where accountability has no effect.
