Key to the control theory perspective is the notion that crime is an inherently individual act, and its explanation requires that we focus on the characteristics of individuals who commit crimes. Consequently, control theory focuses on such issues as self-control and social control. The contributions to this volume explicate and extend the application of control theory. It is divided into three general areas. Part 1 focuses on key assumptions and components of control theories. Contributors discuss the notion of learning, or socialization, in the context of control theory and the effects that families, peers, and the criminal justice system have on self-control, social ties, and criminal behavior. Part 2 applies control theory to areas typically assumed to be out of the domain of self-control theory and social control theory, such as gender differences in crime, domestic violence, and group crime. Considering control theory's emphasis on explaining individual criminal acts, these chapters suggest an interesting area of development by highlighting the possibility that differences in crime across or within groups may begin with individual characteristics and then making inferences about groups and group processes. Part 3 approaches the explanation of crime cross-nationally and at the macro-level. Although the authors take different approaches, they all illustrate that a theory of crime does not require culture-specific elements in order to be a valid cross-cultural explanation. It studies correlates of crime as individual qualities to determine the risks of different categories of persons. The factors reevaluated in the first two essays are long-discredited ones that link family stability and religious upbringing to the reduced likelihood of criminal behavior. The first study shows that children from broken homes are more likely to commit a variety of delinquent acts under a variety of conditions. The paper on religion cites data on cities where higher church membership correlates with lower crime rates and concludes that religion does play a central role in sustaining the moral order. The third paper considers the relationship between crime and the concept of defensible space in environmental design. Another study reports the systematic observation of delinquent children interacting with their parents and ascribes an active role to children in their own socialization, showing how antisocial children train parents and teachers to cease making demands. Papers in the second part of this volume use conceptual schemes derived from disciplines outside sociology. A study of family violence develops the thesis that the ultimate origins and current distribution of child abuse may be found in a single principle of evolutionary biology. A paper examining behavior patterns of aggression, attachment, and violence questions Sutherland's subculture of violence theses by showing how pursuits of basic sociability can result in violent behavior contrary to the values of the group. The third need concerns the lack of interdisciplinary research toward a more integrated understanding of delinquent and criminal behavior. Criminal and Delinquent Careers The birth cohort study by Wolfgang, Figlio and Sellin (1972) was heralded by many (Farrington, 1973; Erickson, 1973; Weis, 1974) as a landmark which allowed researchers to study the course of delinquency without the usual sampling biases that plagued other, cross-sectional research. For the first time, we could get a reasonable picture of when delinquency usually starts, what proportion of the population engages in delinquency, what types of delinquencies they engage in, what proportion continue, and so on. Cross sectional studies do not permit the investigation of careers because cross 1 PROSPECTIVE STUDIES OF CRIME AND DELINQUENCY 2 sectional sampling includes only portions of careers for many of the individuals sampled. This is just one of the many problems that restricted researchers' ability to study the nature of criminal careers.
