Many of these students will go on to engage in project-based work and maintain a portfolio career as opposed to having one full-time job within the field of music. Maintaining a portfolio career requires many skills outside of playing an instrument such as financial management, marketing, networking and fundraising. The goal of the study was to gain a better understanding into the career goals and degree expectations of undergraduate music majors, so that the data can be used to inform career development and career preparation programming within music schools. For this mixed-method study, online surveys were distributed to undergraduate music majors at seven higher education institutions. The findings revealed that there is a distinction between the jobs undergraduate music majors associate with success, the jobs they would ideally like to hold and the jobs they actually expect to hold. Many of the students surveyed are aware that they will likely hold multiple jobs and be self-employed as opposed to having one full-time job. The study also revealed that music majors desire that their undergraduate degree provide them with the skills necessary to be an employable musician in the 21st century in addition to providing artistic and technical skills on their instrument.

Trends within the workforce have created a new set of parameters and expectations from job applicants, and higher education owes it to students to prepare them to succeed within their chosen path. Students at public higher education institutions studying music at the undergraduate level believe that a successful career awaits them with sufficient training in their instrument, when there are myriad paths available that require a more diverse skillset. The research and findings presented in this document came about from a study surveying undergraduate music majors at three separate institutions of mixed characteristics, regarding their perceptions towards their degree, the skills obtained and their usefulness within their chosen career. Students largely found that a limited skillset would be desired from employers, when literature showed a more pluralist skillset would provide more diverse opportunities. As relatively new findings, this research served as an exploratory finding, but possible applications are possible in the field of curriculum design, workplace management and degree accreditation.

Book excerpt: This study examines why too few undergraduate performance majors are learning music technology skills they will need to work as professional musicians. First, the study examines the technology skills required by professional musicians, and then it describes the ways in which schools integrate music technology within the performance major. Data for the study was collected from professional musicians, from music school administrators, and from curriculum artifacts. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to triangulate the data. Findings from the data indicate the following: (a) Professional musicians use technology to notate music, arrange/edit/play back music, record music, organize their digital music collection, teach music, and assess their performances. (b) Many schools of music feel that their overall program is weak in teaching music technology skills. (c) Type and size of a music school do not influence how music technology is taught. However, type of degree, funding structure, the number of core music credits, and whether or not a school offers a music technology program do affect the extent to which music technology skills are taught to undergraduate performance majors. (d) Factors impeding the establishment of a music technology program include overloaded curriculum, insufficient equipment, insufficient funding, and weak faculty technology skills. Recommendations include the creation of a music technology plan; faculty development; an increase in funding, facilities, and technology support; changes in curriculum loads and delivery methods; and the development of assessment methods.
