Book excerpt: There is an expanding body of literature on the retention of students in higher education through programmatic efforts, but there is limited research on African-American students' perceptions of the impact of retention programs and services at predominantly White institutions. Programs and services are created by administrators, faculty and staff on college and university campuses for the purpose of increasing the retention of African-American students and a diverse student body, but many are based on the professionals' perceptions of students' needs. Rarely are programs and services created through dialogue from the student population that will be served or by what I call "listening to the voices" of the students. The premise of this qualitative study is to ascertain if African-American students find retention programs and services beneficial to their persistence on their respective campuses. This study explores the experiences of African-American junior and senior, traditional-aged, full-time, undergraduate students with a grade point average of 3.0 or below exclusively at four predominantly White institutions in Pennsylvania. The experiences of African-American students are different from other groups, including White males, white females and other minority groups. The use of focus groups permits dialogue that enables a researcher to be able to hear first-hand from African-American students giving voice to their personal feelings of the impact of retention programs and services at predominantly White institutions.

Book excerpt: The attrition of minority students is fast becoming a salient issue in higher education. Academic advising has long been viewed as a determinant of participation, persistence and success. Persistence focuses on retention. Participation and success are two objectives of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's initiative "Closing the Gap." This study used quantitative and qualitative methods to examine African American male college students' (AAMCSs) perceptions of advising center practices, advisor practices and affinity factors and their influence on participation and persistence. Data collected from a sample of 225 AAMCSs was analyzed to determine if academic advising was indeed a tool that facilitates participation and persistence. The findings suggest that there is a significant relationship between AAMCSs perceptions of advising center practices, advisor practices and affinity factors (family, peer, and social connections).

Book excerpt: Exploratory in nature, this two-stage institutional case study was conducted in response to the declining participation of Blacks and Hispanics in higher education, particularly at predominantly White colleges and universities (PWCUs). The retention/attrition literature, suggest Black and Hispanic problematic student-institution interactions, questionable academic and social integration, and a uniquely tenuous "fit" at PWCUs. The researcher's intent was to test the validity of the interaction theoretical framework by documenting the experience of Black and Hispanic undergraduates for a five-year period at one large, predominantly White institution in the Southwest. In Stage I, (1) four successive (1982-85) cohorts (2,278) of Black, Hispanic, and White first-time full time undergraduates were identified in order to ascertain in enrollment, persistence and degree attainment rates and trends and (2) cohorts were divided by persistence status, race/ethnicity and gender to permit development of persisting and nonpersisting student profiles using selected demographic, academic and involvement characteristics. In Stage II, a sample of persisting and nonpersisting Black and Hispanic students were surveyed by telephone using a researcher constructed Environmental Evaluation.
