Book Underrepresented Minority Undergraduate Students

Download or read book Underrepresented Minority Undergraduate Students written by Marva Gail Augustine and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than half of the 400,000 freshmen minority students enrolled each year in colleges and universities in the United States fail to graduate within six years and some not at all. Many barriers impact student retention in college, especially for underrepresented undergraduate minority students. Studies in the past have focused on the causes of attrition of underrepresented undergraduate minority students, revealing a significant gap in the research on what leads to their success in higher education. A phenomenological study was used to allow participants to share their experiences from their individual perspectives. This qualitative research study investigated the social psychological attrition barriers encountered by successful undergraduate underrepresented minority students from African American and Latino groups. Exploring the perspective of successful students deepened the understanding of the barriers that minority students face in higher education, how they addressed these barriers, and what helped them to successfully graduate. Through in-depth interviews, this study explored the perceived barriers to student success encountered by successful undergraduate underrepresented minority students in a PWI. Participants' strategies for success was be examined and discussed.

Book Student Perceptions of Minority Nursing Students at a Urban Public University

Download or read book Student Perceptions of Minority Nursing Students at a Urban Public University written by Faith Efada and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Currently, the shortage of minority nurses in nursing schools directly influences further recruitment and retention of minorities as well as the overall quality of nursing practice. To identify variables related to recruitment and retention of minority nurses and the current cultural climate of nursing schools, this study examined California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), nursing students' perceptions of the experience of minorities enrolled in baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs at the university. The study surveyed 41 nursing students in two different classrooms using a modified version of the Cultural Awareness Scale. Findings signified that although the university was perceived as culturally fair, many students identified their own existing biases, views, and comfortability in interacting with other cultures. Further research is needed with larger sample sizes to further assess the cultural climate in the School of Nursing at CSULB.

Book African American Students Perceptions of the Impact of Retention Programs and Services at Predominantly White Institutions

Download or read book African American Students Perceptions of the Impact of Retention Programs and Services at Predominantly White Institutions written by B. DaNine J. Fleming and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an expanding body of literature on the retention of students in higher education through programmatic efforts, but there is limited research on African-American students' perceptions of the impact of retention programs and services at predominantly White institutions. Programs and services are created by administrators, faculty and staff on college and university campuses for the purpose of increasing the retention of African-American students and a diverse student body, but many are based on the professionals' perceptions of students' needs. Rarely are programs and services created through dialogue from the student population that will be served or by what I call "listening to the voices" of the students. The premise of this qualitative study is to ascertain if African-American students find retention programs and services beneficial to their persistence on their respective campuses. This study explores the experiences of African-American junior and senior, traditional-aged, full-time, undergraduate students with a grade point average of 3.0 or below exclusively at four predominantly White institutions in Pennsylvania. The experiences of African-American students are different from other groups, including White males, white females and other minority groups. The use of focus groups permits dialogue that enables a researcher to be able to hear first-hand from African-American students giving voice to their personal feelings of the impact of retention programs and services at predominantly White institutions.

Book Standing on the Outside Looking In

Download or read book Standing on the Outside Looking In written by Mary F. Howard-Hamilton and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared to the literature on the impact of post-secondary institutions on undergraduate institutions, the literature on the academic experiences of graduate students from underrepresented populations is comparatively meager. This book remedies this gap by gathering a rich collection of personal narratives and empirical research to provide a comprehensive account of the actual lived experiences of graduate students of color and their perception of the campus climate. This volume examines issues of access, retention, and transition; and explores the personal experiences of students of color in advanced-degree programs. The contributors cover issues such as financial aid; the culture, mission and racial climate at doctoral granting institutions; the transitional challenges STEM undergraduates face on entering graduate programs; mentoring; the distinct concerns and challenges that African, Asian and Latina/o students encounter in doctoral and professional programs; and the need to acknowledge and support their spirituality.Franklin Tuitt concludes the book by summarizing the issues raised, and making recommendations to faculty, administrators, and directors of graduate programs about what they can do to promote the well-being and success of graduate students of color.

Book Reducing Institutional Barriers to Minority Student Success at a Predominantly White University A Qualitative Action Research Study

Download or read book Reducing Institutional Barriers to Minority Student Success at a Predominantly White University A Qualitative Action Research Study written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative action research study investigates the common barriers encountered by successful undergraduate ethnic minority students enrolled in majors that serve as a pipeline for professional health sciences. Through specialized focus group interviews and individual interviews, this study explores the perceived barriers to student success encountered by successful undergraduate ethnic minority students. Student strategies for success are also examined and discussed. A review of the related literature on student retention in college and characterizations of barriers faced by undergraduate minority students is included. This study employs action research methodology in an effort to communicate the experiences and proposed solutions of successful undergraduate minority science students at a small, predominantly white, private university in rural North Carolina. Study findings indicate that participants encountered barriers related to communication, prejudice, resources, academic preparation, family responsibilities and connections with students of the same ethnicity. Findings from this study also indicate that participants used several broad strategies to ensure their success which include networking, joining campus clubs and organizations, taking reasonable risks, accessing on-campus support services, and being persistent about getting their needs met. Recommendations are provided to the focal university aimed at reducing the barriers identified by participants in this study. Finally, a number of suggestions are provided for future research.

Book Best Practices for the Retention and Graduation of Minority Nursing Students in 2 Year Programs

Download or read book Best Practices for the Retention and Graduation of Minority Nursing Students in 2 Year Programs written by Rosalia Guadalupe Dominguez and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systemic health inequities are rooted in the historical trauma that has targeted communities of color. The lack of diverse nurses is consistent with institutional racism in nursing education. Nursing schools must acknowledge the lack of minority students enrolled in their programs to begin to cultivate an understanding of the embedded institutional bias. Educational systems should incorporate culturally aware concepts within the nursing curriculum to foster a transculturally aware institution. It is important to shift the paradigm in nursing schools to create an inclusive, safe environment, and to ultimately prepare students to care for culturally diverse patients. This project begins with having nurse faculty from two 2-year nursing programs read a fast facts page describing facts about minority student retention and graduation and strategies to help retain minority students in nursing. Two schools, one urban and one rural 2-year nursing school, will read the fast facts page and complete a survey and evaluation tool. This project aims to identify current strategies that two-year nursing schools have implemented to help retain and graduate minority nurses. Anonymous and confidential online surveys will be collected and analyzed for the project. There is a need for more minority nurses to care for communities of color. In addition, more minority nurses may reflect in an increase of minority faculty who will teach future students to provide culturally aware care. This is important as there is a need for more diverse nurses to help close the gap in health inequities.
