Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Undercurrents in American Politics: Comprising the Ford Lectures, Delivered at Oxford University, and the Barbour-Page Lectures, Delivered at the University of Virginia in the Spring of 1914 In the spring of 1914 it was my privilege to deliver the Barbour-Page Lectures at the University of Virginia and the Ford Lectures at Oxford University. As the two courses dealt with kindred subjects, I am publishing them in a single volume. The whole might well have been entitled "Extra Constitutional Government in the United States." The Oxford Lectures, on Property and Democracy, show how a great many organized activities of the community have been kept out of government control altogether. The Virginia Lectures, on Political Methods, show how those matters which were left in government hands have often been managed by very different agencies from those which the framers of our Constitution intended. As the first three lectures were delivered to an English audience, they contain some explanations which are unnecessary for American readers; but it seemed on the whole better to print them in their original form. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we create a model of politics that reaches beyond the nation-state, and beyond settler-colonialism, authoritarianism, and neoliberalism? In Beyond the Pink Tide, Macarena Gómez-Barris explores the alternatives of recent sonic, artistic, activist, visual, and embodied cultural production. By focusing on radical spaces of potential, including queer, youth, trans-feminist, Indigenous, and anticapitalist movements and artistic praxis, Gómez-Barris offers a timely call for a decolonial, transnational American Studies. She reveals the broad possibilities that emerge by refusing national borders in the Americas and by seeing and thinking beyond the frame of state-centered politics. Concrete social justice and transformation begin at the level of artistic, affective, and submerged political imaginaries—in Latin America and the United States, across South-South solidarities, and beyond.

Book White Philanthropy

Download or read book White Philanthropy written by Maribel Morey and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-10-20 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication in 1944, many Americans have described Gunnar Myrdal's An American Dilemma as a defining text on U.S. race relations. Here, Maribel Morey confirms with historical evidence what many critics of the book have suspected: An American Dilemma was not commissioned, funded, or written with the goal of challenging white supremacy. Instead, Morey reveals it was commissioned by Carnegie Corporation president Frederick Keppel, and researched and written by Myrdal, with the intent of solidifying white rule over Black people in the United States. Morey details the complex global origins of An American Dilemma, illustrating its links to Carnegie Corporation's funding of social science research meant to help white policymakers in the Anglo-American world address perceived problems in their governance of Black people. Morey also unpacks the text itself, arguing that Myrdal ultimately complemented his funder's intentions for the project by keeping white Americans as his principal audience and guiding them towards a national policy program on Black Americans that would keep intact white domination. Because for Myrdal and Carnegie Corporation alike, international order rested on white Anglo-Americans' continued ability to dominate effectively.

Book The Undercurrents

Download or read book The Undercurrents written by Kirsty Bell and published by Other Press, LLC. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humane, thought provoking, and moving, this hybrid literary portrait of a place makes the case for radical close readings: of ourselves, our cities, and our histories. The Undercurrents is a dazzling work of biography, memoir, and cultural criticism told from a precise vantage point: a stately nineteenth-century house on Berlin’s Landwehr Canal, a site at the center of great historical changes, but also smaller domestic ones. The view from this house offers a ringside seat onto the city’s theater of action. The building has stood on the banks of the canal since 1869, its feet in the West but looking East, right into the heart of a metropolis in the making, on a terrain inscribed indelibly with trauma. When her marriage breaks down, Kirsty Bell—a British-American art critic, adrift in her midforties—becomes fixated on the history of her building and of her adoptive city. Taking the view from her apartment window as her starting point, she turns to the lives of the house’s various inhabitants, to accounts penned by Walter Benjamin, Rosa Luxemburg, and Gabriele Tergit, and to the female protagonists in the works of Theodor Fontane, Irmgard Keun, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. A new cultural topography of Berlin emerges, one which taps into energetic undercurrents to recover untold or forgotten stories beneath the city’s familiar narratives.
