Book excerpt: Kaylee's thesis project could get her killed. She's determined to move forward with it anyway, especially after finding and meeting Mama C and her band of homeless young people. As Kaylee gets deeper embroiled in the lives of this makeshift family, she realizes her thesis isn't what's important, but the real lives and broken families of those living on the streets. And she wants to help. When she first meets Blayne, the oldest member of Mama C's "family," she senses his strong dislike for her-it could be the way he derisively calls her "college girl" every chance he gets. But she also sees something else behind those ice-blue eyes-a fierce loyalty to and protectiveness of the elderly woman at the center of Kaylee's probe. As Kaylee discovers there's more to Blayne than dirty clothes, an unkempt beard, and a dark past, she finds herself unable to stay away, even when things become dangerous. Within the despair of homelessness and all that comes with it, Mama C sparks hope in countless others who thought they'd lost it. Can Kaylee help keep that spark going, or will she lose it all when she digs too deep into Mama C's past?

Book excerpt: From City Hall to the Pabst Theater, reminders of the past are part of the fabric of Milwaukee. Yet many historic treasures have been lost to time. An overgrown stretch of the Milwaukee River was once a famous beer garden. Blocks of homes and apartments replaced the Wonderland Amusement Park. A quiet bike path now stretches where some of fastest trains in the world previously thundered. Today's Estabrook Park was a vast mining operation, and Marquette University covers the old fairgrounds where Abraham Lincoln spoke. Author Carl Swanson recounts these stories and other tales of bygone days.

Book The Collapse of Richmond s Church Hill Tunnel

Download or read book The Collapse of Richmond s Church Hill Tunnel written by Walter S. Griggs Jr. and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-18 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the facts and mysteries surrounding the history and collapse of Richmond, Virginia's Church Hill Tunnel. A must for fans of railroad and Richmond history. Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy, was in shambles after the Civil War. The bulk of Reconstruction became dependent on the railways, and one of the most important links in the system was the Church Hill Tunnel. The tunnel was eventually rendered obsolete by an alternative path over a viaduct, and it was closed for regular operation in 1902. However, the city still used it infrequently to transport supplies, and it was maintained with regular safety inspections. The city decided to reopen the tunnel in 1925 due to overcrowding on the viaduct, but the tunnel needed to be strengthened and enlarged. On October 2, 1925, 190 ft. of the tunnel unexpectedly caved in, trapping construction workers and an entire locomotive inside. In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in the tunnel and the mystery surrounding its collapse. There were cave-ins and sink holes above the surface for decades after the tunnel was sealed up, and in 1998, a reporter from the Richmond Times-Dispatch did an investigation, trying to determine the current condition of the tunnel. In 2006, the Virginia Historical Society announced its efforts to try and excavate the locomotive and remaining bodies.

Book Land of the Lost Souls

Download or read book Land of the Lost Souls written by Cadillac Man, and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past 16 years, Cadillac Man (so named because he was once hit by an El Dorado and thereafter bore an imprint of its hood ornament) has lived on the streets of New York City. Over those years, he has recorded the facts of his daily life - the harsh realities of surviving on the street, the often tragic encounters with the non-homeless world, the deep bonds with his fellow homeless, and the surprisingly varied realities of life on the outside - writing hundreds of thousands of words in a series of spiral bound notebooks. "My Life in the Streets" distills those journals into a memoir of homeless life that is peopled with indelible characters and packed with gripping stories. In a gritty, poignant, and funny voice, Cadillac narrates his descent into homelessness, the travails and unexpected freedoms of his life, and the story of his love affair with a young runaway, whom he eventually (and tragically) reunites with her family. The United States has 700,000 homeless people; ultimately, Cadillac's story is their story.
