Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the German Shells Life is a curious thing. In time of war Life is itself the extraordinary and Death seems the only ordinary thing possible for men. In time of war man is but a straw thrown into the wide ocean. If the tossing waves do not engulf him he can do no more than float on the surface, God alone knows his destiny. This book, Under the German Shells, is another instance of war's uncertainties. Sent by my government to America to join the new American army as instructor, I wrote the greater part of the book on the steamer which brought me. The reader will, perhaps, read it when I am dead; for another steamer is about to carry me back to France, where I shall again be "under the German shells," before the book will see the light. This is the second work which I have written during the war. The first. Gens du Front, appeared in France while I was in America. I wrote it in the trenches. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an colour illustrated compendium of all shell in use by the German Army in early 1916. It was compiled from actual examples of the shells and from German pamphlets describing the use the shells were to be put to.Each shell, and there are many, is described in the text and (almost always) with a coloured scale drawing of the shell itself. The calibres range from the 3.7cm and its variations through to the 42cm heavy shell. It also includes gas and shrapnel shells and mortar projectiles. The introduction is a table of all shells used with a description of their basic colour, the German name for the shell, and an index reference within the book.Included in this reprint are the various amendments (23 in all) which were issued after publication of this basic manual, each amendment following the structure of the main book. Thus there are many more coloured illustrations. The description of the shells is extremely detailed, and includes a section on 'Employment' - where and when the German gunners would fire that particular shell, and there is a section on Remarks, which is very important.

  • Author : Anton Kaes
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2009-08-24

Download or read book Shell Shock Cinema written by Anton Kaes and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-24 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shell Shock Cinema explores how the classical German cinema of the Weimar Republic was haunted by the horrors of World War I and the the devastating effects of the nation's defeat. In this exciting new book, Anton Kaes argues that masterworks such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, The Nibelungen, and Metropolis, even though they do not depict battle scenes or soldiers in combat, engaged the war and registered its tragic aftermath. These films reveal a wounded nation in post-traumatic shock, reeling from a devastating defeat that it never officially acknowledged, let alone accepted. Kaes uses the term "shell shock"--coined during World War I to describe soldiers suffering from nervous breakdowns--as a metaphor for the psychological wounds that found expression in Weimar cinema. Directors like Robert Wiene, F. W. Murnau, and Fritz Lang portrayed paranoia, panic, and fear of invasion in films peopled with serial killers, mad scientists, and troubled young men. Combining original close textual analysis with extensive archival research, Kaes shows how this post-traumatic cinema of shell shock transformed extreme psychological states into visual expression; how it pushed the limits of cinematic representation with its fragmented story lines, distorted perspectives, and stark lighting; and how it helped create a modernist film language that anticipated film noir and remains incredibly influential today. A compelling contribution to the cultural history of trauma, Shell Shock Cinema exposes how German film gave expression to the loss and acute grief that lay behind Weimar's sleek façade.
