Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under Oklahoma Skies contains three novellas set in Swells, Oklahoma in the same storyverse as the Only an Okie Will Do series. Cowboy Kind of Heritage Dean Trulove, a third-generation owner of Trulove Cattle Company and Stockyard, has waited for the day he'd inherit the business. Unfortunately, it comes at the cost of his mother's heart problems and his dad's subsequent retirement. To relieve some of the pressure, he attempts to pick up a damsel in distress at the local watering hole. Even when he discovers she's his new employee, he can't flip the off switch on his object of desire. All the warnings in the world from his old-fashioned father won't wrestle him away from a woman as skittish as any unbroken horse that's passed through the stockyard pens. London Bingham is in a bind-she's got an unexpected bundle of joy on the way, but luckily, she accepts a new job with an understanding boss. Her only problem is, her sexy boss's dad, a formidable man with an ages-old stick up his derriere about unmarried mothers in the workplace, makes for an uncomfortable situation. As much as she'd like to give in to her persuasive boss and build a relationship, it's causing work-place trauma and domestic drama. To Dean, it's clear that London needs a good ol' cowboy to show her that she can have it all-a family, a career, and a man with a heart wider than the Arkansas River to remind her that even a woman from the wrong side of the tracks can find the happiness she deserves. Cowboy Kind of Forgiveness For many, Christmas is a joyous time of year meant for families and friends to gather near. For Everly Thibodaux, it's a time of tragedy and heartbreak. Her twin brother died before the holiday in a freak accident, leaving her alone and empty. Her brother's best friend, the man she carried strong feelings for, witnessed the event that shattered both their worlds. All her anger falls on him for destroying her life. Swift Scott's life crumbled until he fell into a bottle to drown the pain of losing a friend and the misery he caused for the girl he loved. After two years of self-destruction, he pulls himself together and moves back to Swells, hoping for reconciliation and forgiveness from Everly. Except that Everly, like him, is stuck in a well of heartache and grief. He knows he can't force her to love him or even tolerate his presence, but he'd settle for seeing her smile again, no matter what the cost. In a small town like Swells, they can't avoid each other forever and circumstances draw them together again. As the one person who truly understands her heartbreak, Swift can be the only man who he helps Everly learn to love again. Cowboy Kind of Devotion Austin Locke is a devoted dad, an all-around cowboy, and...a total fool. Stuck on his self-absorbed ex-girlfriend for far too many years, he's given up on finding true love. His little girl could use a mother, but they get by, depending on one another as they travel from rodeo to rodeo. A chance meeting with breakaway roper Natalie Corbin opens Austin's eyes. She offers the kind of attentiveness and openness that's been missing in his daughter's life. Not to mention Natalie is sexy and funny, which sweetens the deal, even though they both know with their hectic rodeo lives, they can't make any kind of relationship a permanent thing. Natalie knows broody-natured guys are often heartbreakers, but she's drawn to Austin and his adorable, lonely daughter. When she meets his ex, she can immediately see why he built a wall around his heart. Neither of them are looking for a serious commitment, but it would be easy to fall for the handsome cowboy and his daughter. Even as she gets to know-and care for him-there seems to be some kind of trouble resting on his shoulders. As their time at the rodeo draws to a close, they either have to make a move toward happiness or the weight of Austin's secret will force them

Book Under a White Sky

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Sixth Extinction returns to humanity’s transformative impact on the environment, now asking: After doing so much damage, can we change nature, this time to save it? RECOMMENDED BY PRESIDENT OBAMA AND BILL GATES • SHORTLISTED FOR THE WAINWRIGHT PRIZE FOR WRITING • ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Washington Post • ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Time, Esquire, Smithsonian Magazine, Vulture, Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, Library Journal • “Beautifully and insistently, Kolbert shows us that it is time to think radically about the ways we manage the environment.”—Helen Macdonald, The New York Times That man should have dominion “over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth” is a prophecy that has hardened into fact. So pervasive are human impacts on the planet that it’s said we live in a new geological epoch: the Anthropocene. In Under a White Sky, Elizabeth Kolbert takes a hard look at the new world we are creating. Along the way, she meets biologists who are trying to preserve the world’s rarest fish, which lives in a single tiny pool in the middle of the Mojave; engineers who are turning carbon emissions to stone in Iceland; Australian researchers who are trying to develop a “super coral” that can survive on a hotter globe; and physicists who are contemplating shooting tiny diamonds into the stratosphere to cool the earth. One way to look at human civilization, says Kolbert, is as a ten-thousand-year exercise in defying nature. In The Sixth Extinction, she explored the ways in which our capacity for destruction has reshaped the natural world. Now she examines how the very sorts of interventions that have imperiled our planet are increasingly seen as the only hope for its salvation. By turns inspiring, terrifying, and darkly comic, Under a White Sky is an utterly original examination of the challenges we face.

Book Black Birds in the Sky

Download or read book Black Birds in the Sky written by Brandy Colbert and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A searing new work of nonfiction from award-winning author Brandy Colbert about the history and legacy of one of the most deadly and destructive acts of racial violence in American history: the Tulsa Race Massacre. Winner, Boston Globe-Horn Book Award. In the early morning of June 1, 1921, a white mob marched across the train tracks in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and into its predominantly Black Greenwood District—a thriving, affluent neighborhood known as America's Black Wall Street. They brought with them firearms, gasoline, and explosives. In a few short hours, they'd razed thirty-five square blocks to the ground, leaving hundreds dead. The Tulsa Race Massacre is one of the most devastating acts of racial violence in US history. But how did it come to pass? What exactly happened? And why are the events unknown to so many of us today? These are the questions that award-winning author Brandy Colbert seeks to answer in this unflinching nonfiction account of the Tulsa Race Massacre. In examining the tension that was brought to a boil by many factors—white resentment of Black economic and political advancement, the resurgence of white supremacist groups, the tone and perspective of the media, and more—a portrait is drawn of an event singular in its devastation, but not in its kind. It is part of a legacy of white violence that can be traced from our country's earliest days through Reconstruction, the Civil Rights movement in the mid–twentieth century, and the fight for justice and accountability Black Americans still face today. The Tulsa Race Massacre has long failed to fit into the story Americans like to tell themselves about the history of their country. This book, ambitious and intimate in turn, explores the ways in which the story of the Tulsa Race Massacre is the story of America—and by showing us who we are, points to a way forward. Then imagine them establishing observational sites and codified systems to pass their knowledge down through the centuries and continually refine it. A few years ago such images would have been abruptly dismissed. Today we are wiser. Living the Sky describes the exciting archaeoastronomical discoveries in the United States in recent decades. Using history, science, and direct observation, Ray A. Williamson transports the reader into the sky world of the Indians. We visit the Bighorn Medicine Wheel, sit with a Zuni sun priest on the winter solstice, join explorers at the rites of the Hopis and the Navajos, and trek to Chaco Canyon to make direct on-site observations of celestial events.

Download or read book Scanning the Skies written by Marlene Bradford and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tornadoes, nature's most violent and unpredictable storms, descend from the clouds nearly one thousand times yearly and have claimed eighteen thousand American lives since 1880. However, the U.S. Weather Bureau--fearing public panic and believing tornadoes were too fleeting for meteorologists to predict--forbade the use of the word "tornado" in forecasts until 1938. Scanning the Skies traces the history of today's tornado warning system, a unique program that integrates federal, state, and local governments, privately controlled broadcast media, and individuals. Bradford examines the ways in which the tornado warning system has grown from meager beginnings into a program that protects millions of Americans each year. Although no tornado forecasting program existed before WWII, the needs of the military prompted the development of a severe weather warning system in tornado prone areas. Bradford traces the post-war creation of the Air Force centralized tornado forecasting program and its civilian counterpart at the Weather Bureau. Improvements in communication, especially the increasing popularity of television, allowed the Bureau to expand its warning system further. This book highlights the modern tornado watch system and explains how advancements during the latter half of the twentieth-century--such as computerized data collection and processing systems, Doppler radar, state-of-the-art television weather centers, and an extensive public education program--have resulted in the drastic reduction of tornado fatalities.
