Book excerpt: At my age, 74 (as of this date), having a granddaughter is the most precious of all feelings. All Grandparents can identify. I have been very fortunate in my life. Born to amazing parents. Lived in many different cultures. Traveled to many countries (thanks to the US Navy), and, in fact, educated by the Navy in the fine art of Photography. I was never the best photographer, but I always approached each shot with passion. I wanted not only to share what I saw but, also, to convey feelings of the subject and/or scene. This little Black and white booklet is an attempt to share with my grandchildren, my grandnieces & my grandnephews and to all children everywhere. The pages are deliberately designed with lots of blank spaces; the better for the child to draw and for the grandparent to share handwritten notes. I was inspired to do so because of a bit of personal history; a hand-written note from my Mom to me. It is fading now since she passed away many, many years ago. This experience was the impetus to leave spaces on each page, lots of space, to draw and write. Please understand that this is not a work of art. It certainly will not win any literary awards, but that was never the point. The point is simply to create a scratch pad, if you will, that one may interact with a child.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the earliest performers on WSM in Nashville, Uncle Dave Macon became the Grand Ole Opry's first superstar. His old-time music and energetic stage shows made him a national sensation and fueled a thirty-year run as one of America's most beloved entertainers. Michael D. Doubler tells the amazing story of the Dixie Dewdrop, a country music icon. Born in 1870, David Harrison Macon learned the banjo from musicians passing through his parents' Nashville hotel. After playing local shows in Middle Tennessee for decades, a big break led Macon to Vaudeville, the earliest of his two hundred-plus recordings and eventually to national stardom. Uncle Dave--clad in his trademark plug hat and gates-ajar collar--soon became the face of the Opry itself with his spirited singing, humor, and array of banjo picking styles. For the rest of his life, he defied age to tour and record prolifically, manage his business affairs, mentor up-and-comers like David "Stringbean" Akeman, and play with the Delmore Brothers, Roy Acuff, and Bill Monroe.

Book excerpt: As the deep sea once gave rise to pirates, so also did deep space . The crew of The Twenty-Wun Stars is one such group of opportunistic souls. This exceptional group of serendipitous scoundrels find themselves under the leadership of Captain Jake Wade. The swaggering mojo at which this man moves thru life is literally infectious. Skirting the law where they can, looking for their next score to make payroll and trying to keep the ship online, is always the order of the day. UNMADE Many titles have laid out the lives of the past, present and future crew of the pirate ship The Twenty-Wun Stars. All of that has brought us here, where we get the formal introduction to Jake Jaimon Wade and his ascent to captain. In the middle of another firefight from a deal gone sideways, the crew of the Twenty-Wun Stars is aided by two ladies who are from125 years in the future. In a mad scramble to escape a fight where they are outnumbered and outgunned the ship crashes out of hyperspace onto an undiscovered, isolated advanced steampunk planet. The two young ladies from the future are trying to find the woman who in their time has destroyed the CRW (Confederation of Republic Worlds), killed or enslaved billions and driven humanity to the brink of destruction. It is their hope to find her before her march down the path of war ever begins. Having reason to believe at some point she was a member of the crew of the Twenty-Wun Stars, their trek thru time has brought them on board the ship the day it crashes onto a steampunk world deeply steeped in superhero/super-villain culture. As fate would have it, the crew of the Twenty-Wun Stars fits right in with their unique array of gifts and talents. While the ship is being repaired and the two ladies search for the woman who destroys the future, run-ins with the local super powered elite up the stakes that threaten the crew, the ship, this new world and ultimately the CRW. Over three thousand years after the final battle over the soul of mankind, between God, Satan, and Nefarious, destroys the earth, a new chapter begins. The resulting hyperspace blast from the earth’s destruction flings the last of humanity into the furthest reaches of space on their surviving starships. Over 300 years passes before these star cast seeds of mankind reclaim the stars, and begin to find each other. The first of the new worlds to find each other and reconnect old humanity on new worlds, would eventually form The Confederation of Republic Worlds. This union would be marked with the erection of the Jara Timekeeping Tower on Jara Prime, broadcasting a synced time throughout the known universe. This is the Jara Era.

Book Expelled Dreams Die in the Abscence of Desire

Download or read book Expelled Dreams Die in the Abscence of Desire written by Chijioke Ogbuike and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though fourteen months of his life had gone down the drain, his dream was still on course. End of his stay at Sumatech maybe, but certainly not the end of his education. He tried to tell himself that he had not really lost faith. Mob law was a law of its own. While in detention, they had often argued back and forth about the efficacy of surviving in Uremia. They had also reached their conclusions. Men made laws. Arrogant laws that gave them the cloak of gods. Just so long as it suited their purpose, fairness could go take a hike. There would always be repressions of freedom of expression or basic human rights because men failed to realize the symbiotic relationship of peaceful coexistence. In order for humanity to survive this tragedy, it is also man that should stand up and fight that evil, confident in the fact that nothing that is false endures forever. The late Victoria was merely a victim as well as all the others who died.

Book excerpt: Ben and his sisters had no idea that two teenagers trespassed onto their property. The intruders were mesmerized when they saw Bens younger sister ordering the birds and ducks to fly her to the pond. These flying creatures grabbed her clothes with their beaks and bills and elevated her high up in the air. Could this place be haunted? the teens wondered. How do the children get these animals to obey them? How was this girl able to get the birds and ducks to lift her up into the air and fly away with her? After having sworn the children to secrecy, Uncle Dave showed them his underground laboratories. He explained how snow, rain, and hail are formed. The siblings had fun playing in the labs. They made snow people in the Snow Lab and they experienced zero gravity in the Zero Gravity Lab. The intruders discovered the secret labs and managed to sneak in. They almost froze in the Snow Lab and nearly drowned when a storm developed in the Ocean Lab. Why is there snow, a beach, an ocean, and a real tropical rain forest in Uncle Daves basement? The answer to these questions, plus many educational and moral lessons can all be discovered in this unique place called Magic Farm.

Book Louisiana Hayride

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tracey E. W. Laird
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN : 0195167511
  • Pages : 221 pages

Download or read book Louisiana Hayride written by Tracey E. W. Laird and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a Saturday night in 1948, Hank Williams stepped onto the stage of the Louisiana Hayride and sang "Lovesick Blues." Up to that point, Williams's yodeling style had been pigeon-holed as hillbilly music, cutting him off from the mainstream of popular music. Taking a chance on this untried artist, the Hayride--a radio "barn dance" or country music variety show like the Grand Ole Opry--not only launched Williams's career, but went on to launch the careers of well-known performers such as Jim Reeves, Webb Pierce, Kitty Wells, Johnny Cash, and Slim Whitman.Broadcast from Shreveport, Louisiana, the local station KWKH's 50,000-watt signal reached listeners in over 28 states and lured them to packed performances of the Hayride's road show. By tracing the dynamic history of the Hayride and its sponsoring station, ethnomusicologist Tracey Laird reveals the critical role that this part of northwestern Louisiana played in the development of both country music and rock and roll. Delving into the past of this Red River city, she probes the vibrant historical, cultural, and social backdrop for its dynamic musical scene. Sitting between the Old South and the West, this one-time frontier town provided an ideal setting for the cross-fertilization of musical styles. The scene was shaped by the region's easy mobility, the presence of a legal "red-light" district from 1903-17, and musical interchanges between blacks and whites, who lived in close proximity and in nearly equal numbers. The region nurtured such varied talents as Huddie Ledbetter, the "king of the twelve-string guitar," and Jimmie Davis, the two term "singing governor" of Louisiana who penned "You Are My Sunshine."Against the backdrop of the colorful history of Shreveport, the unique contribution of this radio barn dance is revealed. Radio shaped musical tastes, and the Hayride's frontier-spirit producers took risks with artists whose reputations may have been shaky or whose styles did not neatly fit musical categories (both Hank Williams and Elvis Presley were rejected by the Opry before they came to Shreveport). The Hayride also served as a training ground for a generation of studio sidemen and producers who steered popular music for decades after the Hayride's final broadcast. While only a few years separated the Hayride appearances of Hank Williams and Elvis Presley--who made his national radio debut on the show in 1954--those years encompassed seismic shifts in the tastes, perceptions, and self-consciousness of American youth. Though the Hayride is often overshadowed by the Grand Ole Opry in country music scholarship, Laird balances the record and reveals how this remarkable show both documented and contributed to a powerful transformation in American popular music.
