Book English Schoolboy Stories

Download or read book English Schoolboy Stories written by Benjamin Watson and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A surprising number of classic English authors wrote school stories, from Mary Shelley and Maria Edgeworth through Evelyn Waugh and Stephen Spender. Coverage spans two centuries of fiction set in the endowed private schools called Public Schools in England. Famous works such as Tom Brown's Schooldays by Hughes and Stalky & Co. by Kipling are described, along with books of accomplished but lesser-known writers such as Charles Turley, Eden Phillpotts, Talbot Baines Reed, and Desmond Coke. In addition to their pure entertainment value, these novels preserve a wealth of cultural information: class attitudes, sexual development, sports history, consciousness of Empire, role of the Established Church, study of the Classics. Biographical sketches are provided for most of the authors.

  • Author : Doreen Jensen
  • Publisher : UBC Press
  • Release : 2011-11-01
  • ISBN : 0774844868
  • Pages : 102 pages

Download or read book Robes of Power written by Doreen Jensen and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The button blanket is eye-catching, prestigious and treasured -- one of the most spectacular embellishments to the Indian culture of the Northwest Coast and a unique form of graphic and narrative art. The traditional crest-style robe is the sister of the totem pole and, like the pole, proclaims hereditary rights, obligations and powers. Unlike the pole, about which countless books and papers have been written, the button blanket has had no chroniclers. This is not only the first major publication to focus on button blankets but also the first oral history about them and their place in the culture of the Northwest Coast. Those interviewed include speakers from six of the seven major Northwest Coast Indian groups. Elders, designers, blanket makers, and historians, each has a voice, but all do not conform to any one theory about the ceremonial robe. Rather, the book is a search for the truth about the historical and contemporary role and traditions of the blanket, as those relate to the past and present Indian way of life on the Pacific Northwest Coast.

Book Saurus Street 1 Tyrannosaurus in the Veggie Patch

Download or read book Saurus Street 1 Tyrannosaurus in the Veggie Patch written by Nick Falk and published by Random House Australia. This book was released on 2013-01-02 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saurus St is just like any other street . . . except for the dinosaurs. When Jack wishes for his own Tyrannosaurus, he doesn't expect a real live one to turn up in the veggie patch. It’s pretty cool, but there's no way he can keep it. It’s far too big to hide in the shed, and it’s bound to eat one of the neighbours sooner or later. With the help of local whizz kid Toby, Jack builds a time machine and sends the T-rex back to the dinosaur era. But when Toby, Jack and Charlie the dog get sent back to the Cretaceous period too, there's more than one troublesome Tyrannosaur to deal with.

Book Vanishing British Columbia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Kluckner
  • Publisher : UBC Press
  • Release : 2011-11-01
  • ISBN : 0774842539
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Vanishing British Columbia written by Michael Kluckner and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The old buildings and historic places of British Columbia form a kind of "roadside memory," a tangible link with stories of settlement, change, and abandonment that reflect the great themes of BC's history. Michael Kluckner began painting his personal map of the province in a watercolour sketchbook. In 1999, after he put a few of the sketches on his website, a network of correspondents emerged that eventually led him to the family letters, photo albums, and memories from a disappearing era of the province. Vanishing British Columbia is a record of these places and the stories they tell, presenting a compelling argument for stewardship of regional history in the face of urbanization and globalization.
