Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘I’he int, ernational Association for Cryptologic Research (IACK) organizes two inter- tioilill coiifcrcnces every year, one in Europe and one in the United States. EUROCRI’PT ’89 was the seventh European conference and was held in Houthalen, Belgium on April 10-13, 1989. With close to 300 participants, it was perhaps the largest open conferencr on c:rypt, ogra.phy ever held. The field of cryptography is expanding not only because of the increased vulnerability of computer systems and networks to a11 increasing range of threats, but also because of t1ic ra.pid progress in cryptographic methods, that t,he readers can witness by reading the book. The present proceedings contain nearly all contributions which were presented including the talks at the rump session. The chapters correspond to the sessions at the conference. It wa5 the first time that a rump session was organized on a Eurocrypt conference. Sixteen impromptu talks were given, and the authors were invited to submit short abstracts of their presentations. Because of the special character of this session, the editors have taken the liberty to shorten some of these.
Download or read book Open EDI and Law in Europe written by Andreas Mitrakas and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electronic commerce applications all allow the transfer of electronic data from one point to another. Open EDI--a particular application of electronic commerce--also permits commercial transactions to take place in a fully automated and highly organised trading environment. This volume focuses on open EDI and its relationship with law. When confronted with technology, the typical reaction of the law is to support interpretations and amendments of existing statutes so that old laws can accommodate the change. Open EDI, however, does not fit within this traditional regulatory method. Open EDI permits ad hoc open electronic transactions irrespective of geographical border and jurisdictions among trading partners with no prior trade relationship. By doing so, open EDI limits the possibility of using up-front interchange agreements to address the legal problems of the interchange. It therefore requires the use of legal instruments supported by information technology to overcome legal problems. Openness in an electronic environment has the potential to initiate an unobserved change in law. Possible regulations should address users' need to act in such a trading environment without the inhibition of basic legal concerns. Open EDI and Law in Europe concludes that the challenge of open EDI necessitates working toward a new legal framework based on international law and supported by information technology. This volume will assist lawyers and laypersons concerned with the practical and theoretical aspects of the legal issues of the application of open EDI by pointing out subtle issues in the application of law in this area and by provoking thought regarding possible solutions.

Download or read book Ocean Bills of Lading written by A. Athanassios N. Yiannopoulos and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main thrust of this volume is the use of electronic bills of lading in lieu of the traditional documents. The advantages of electronic bills of lading are many, including lower cost, higher efficiency, improved security, and speedier delivery of goods at the end of the voyage (the collection of reports focus upon bills of lading for the international carriage of goods by sea). According to the contributors, the use of electronic bills of lading is, essentially, a business rather than a legal decision. The law may provide the legal framework for the function of electronic bills of lading in the same way and with the same effects as the traditional bills of lading. However, business interests will eventually determine whether the availability of, and the economic incentives for, the use of the electronic bills of lading outweigh concerns for privacy and the safeguarding of trade secrets, for accuracy of information, and for security transactions and acquisition. Such concerns call for technological rather than legal solutions. This book ahould appeal primarily to practitioners who are interested in economics and commerce.
