Book Effect of Unbonded Joints in an Aluminum Honeycomb core Material for Sandwich Constructions

Download or read book Effect of Unbonded Joints in an Aluminum Honeycomb core Material for Sandwich Constructions written by Charles Brazer Norris and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Static shear, fatigue shear, and compression tests were made on an aluminum honeycomb core material. Bending and compression tests were made on sandwich panels having this core material and aluminum facings. The bonds between the honeycomb cells of some of the core material were completely removed. The modulus of rigidity and the shear strength of the unbonded material were found to be about 70% of those of the well-bonded material. The compressive strength of the unbonded material is about 50% of that of the well-bonded material, which is consistent with the assumption that the compressive strength is proportional to the critical compression stress of the cell walls.

Book Corrosion protection of unbonded tendons

Download or read book Corrosion protection of unbonded tendons written by FIB – International Federation for Structural Concrete and published by FIB - International Federation for Structural Concrete. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unbonded tendons are popular in certain types of structure for reasons of economy and speed of construction. As the structures depend entirely on the integrity of these unbonded tendons, there has been concern that they may be damaged by corrosion. The FIP Commission on Prestressing Steels and Systems accordingly appointed an ad hoc committee to investigate available knowledge and experience and to instigate research if necessary.

Book Post tensioning in Buildings

Download or read book Post tensioning in Buildings written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of prestressing technology has constituted one of the more important improvements in the fields of structural engineering and construction. Referring particularly to post-tensioning applications, it is generally recognized how it opens the possibility to improve economy, structural behaviour and aesthetic aspects in concrete solutions. In spite of the simplicity of its basic concepts and well-known advantages, the application extent of post-tensioning solutions cannot be considered harmonized in the different areas and structural applications. In fact, for various reasons, it appears that the potential offered by prestressing is far from being fully exploited, especially in building structures field. In many cases where post-tensioning would provide a visibly superior solution, it happens after all that a more conventional non-prestressed solution is often selected. The main objective of this fib Technical Report is therefore to show the benefits of using post-tensioning for the more common practical applications in concrete buildings. The document is mainly addressed to architects, contractors and owners. It is also drafted with the goal of motivating building designers to use post-tensioning: basic design aspects related to prestressing effects and design criteria are summarized and conceptual design aspects are emphasized. A set of practical examples is presented, showing the adopted solutions and their advantages when meeting the requirements of specific problems. The selected examples were precisely not chosen because they are outstanding structures. As a matter of fact, post-tensioning principles and technology can be used in any structure, independently of its importance, covering a wide range of building structural applications, improving the structure quality and promoting concrete as a structural material. The advantages of using post-tensioning, concerning structural behaviour, economy, detailing and constructive aspects, are illustrated by the presentation of several existing structures, most of them designed by Working Party members. General design calculations are not presented, but design results showing the improvement in structural behaviour are illustrated.

Book Acceptance of post tensioning systems for cryogenic applications

Download or read book Acceptance of post tensioning systems for cryogenic applications written by FIB – International Federation for Structural Concrete and published by FIB - International Federation for Structural Concrete. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Second World War the demand of energy has undergone an exponential growth that has led to a sharp annual increase in the use of natural gas in both, cities and thermal power stations. Nowadays, the strategic relevance of natural gas as a main source of energy is evident with a contribution of more than 20% of the total world consumption. This development in increasing demand of natural gas has led for a need of suitable storage and transportation infrastructure. Various gases, especially hydrocarbons, are preferably stored in liquid form for transportation and storage since the phase transformation from gas to liquid comes with a significant reduction of the volume (e.g. up to 600 times). Gases can be liquefied by raising the pressure or by cooling to their boiling point, which for most gases is below 0°C. This is known as cryogenic storage. The term cryogenic is derived from two Greek words, namely kryos meaning icy-cold and genes which can be translated as shape. These fib recommendations are concerned about post-tensioning systems used in cryogenic tanks and have been formulated on the basis of actual available knowledge with the aim to reflect the current state of the art. Consequently, these recommendations have included a classification of the different cryogenic tanks typologies used in the past and nowadays, the associated different tendon types depending on their exposure to low temperature (e.g. never, only accidentally or during normal tank operation) and the testing regime required for acceptance of the materials and the post-tensioning system according to this document. An international working group comprising more than 20 experts from administrative authorities, universities, laboratories, owners, structural designers, suppliers of prestressing steels and post-tensioning systems suppliers have actively contributed in order to develop these recommendations. This text has been written to cover best construction practices around the world, and to provide material specifications which are considered to be the most advanced available at the time of preparing this text. For ease of use (for Owner, Designer and Post-tensioning System Supplier), the content has been arranged systematically according to the system components into chapters focusing on performance characteristics, requirements and acceptance criteria.

Book Evaluation of Unbonded Ultrathin Whitetopping of Brick Streets

Download or read book Evaluation of Unbonded Ultrathin Whitetopping of Brick Streets written by James K. Cable and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many cities in Iowa have retained the original brick street surfaces in downtown areas and in older residential areas as the base for modern driving surfaces. The original brick surfaces were not built to handle current and future traffic loadings. In recent years, these surfaces have tended to shift and become uneven, creating problems with safety. Asphaltic concrete overlays have been the typical rehabilitation technique in these situations. This has proven to be successful rehabilitation technique in some cases; in other cases, the combination of movement of the brick and flexibility of the asphalt has proven to accentuate the original problems. Most of the existing literature on rehabilitation of brick streets shows the use of asphaltic concrete. Other rehabilitation methods include reconstruction of the brick surface and strengthening of the surface by placing asphaltic concrete or portland cement concrete, along with sand, underneath the brick layers. To date, little if anything has been done in the area of using portland cement concrete as an overlay of the brick surfaces. This final report documents the planning, construction, and performance of unbonded ultrathin whitetopping rehabilitation of a brick street in Oskaloosa, Iowa, in 2001. It also reports on a similar project in Des Moines that was constructed two years later in 2003.

Book Progress in Structural Engineering

Download or read book Progress in Structural Engineering written by Donald E. Grierson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We three editors of this volume are former Ph. D. students of Professor Mircea Cohn at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Donald Grierson obtained his Ph. D. degree in 1968, Alberto Franchi in 1977, and Paolo Riva in 1988, and as such, we span almost the entire career of Professor Cohn at Waterloo. Even though we graduated during different decades in his life, we share similar views of Mircea Cohn as an educator, researcher and man. Together we recall that he was very firm in his resolve that we get the most out of the education he was facilitating for us. Together we agree that he was inspirational in his desire to have us carry out the very best research work we were capable of. Together we feel particularly fortunate to have had such a dedicated and distinguished individual as Professor Cohn as our Ph. D. research advisor. It is with great pleasure that we ack nowledge him as our mentor and friend. We began in 1989 to plan this volume as a tribute to Professor Cohn on the occasion of his 65th birthday in 1991. Upon contacting his many former students and research associates from around the world, we were not surprised to find that they too shared our feelings of respect and admiration for Mircea Cohn as an educator, researcher and man.
