Book excerpt: The Quest, set in America's Southwest, during 1996 --2001, during Clinton's and Bush's Administrations, is an intriguing and engaging story of an inquisitive, intelligent, but troubled Coloradan Vietnam veteran, who, having been born to an Anglo mother and an Hispanic father, sets out on a quest to find his true identity and place in the universe, by coming to Kingsville, Texas,, home of the legendary King Ranch, to explore his father's Chicano roots, as well as his own. In doing so, he becomes immersed in the corrupt public school, university, state, and federal politics, during this troubled period of Gore/Bush election fiasco, the Religious Right abortion issue, the 9/11 twin tower attack, and the Florida/Supreme Court decisions. During the course of these events, Christopher Worth Garcia, while exploring his father's Hispanic Tejano culture and music, meets the enchanting and beautiful but enigmatic Aurora and the members of the "Discussion Club," with the "colorful" name. Chris is thus caught and wound in a web which includes the stalker/husband from whom he has to find and extricate himself -- or perish.
Download or read book La Sombra del Egombe egombe written by Gudea de Lagash and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 903 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Smoking Kills written by Conrad Keating and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the Second World War, Britain had the highest incidence of lung cancer in the world. For the first time lung cancer deaths exceeded those from tuberculosis - and no one knew why. On 30 September 1950, a young physician named Richard Doll concluded in a research paper that smoking cigarettes was 'a cause and an important cause' of the rapidly increasing epidemic of lung cancer. His historic and contentious finding marked the beginning of a life-long crusade against premature death and the forces of 'Big Tobacco'. Born in 1912, Doll, a natural patrician, jettisoned his Establishment background and joined the Communist Party as a reaction to the 'anarchy and waste' of capitalism in the 1930s. He treated the blistered feet of the Jarrow Marchers, served as a medical officer at the retreat to Dunkirk, and became a true hero of the NHS. A political revolutionary and an epidemiologist with a Darwinian heart-of-stone, Doll fulfilled his early ambition to be 'a valuable member of society'. Doll steered a course through a minefield of medical and political controversy. Opponents from the tobacco industry questioned his science, while later critics from the environmental lobby attacked his alleged connections to the chemical industry. An enigmatic individual, Doll was feared and respected throughout a long and wide-ranging scientific career which ended only with his death in 2005. In this authorised and groundbreaking biography, Conrad Keating reveals a man whose life and work encapsulates much of the twentieth century. Described by the British Medical Journal as 'perhaps Britain s most eminent doctor', Doll ushered in a new era in medicine: the intellectual ascendancy of medical statistics. According to the Nobel laureate Sir Paul Nurse, his work, which may have prevented tens of millions of deaths, 'transcends the boundaries of professional medicine into the global community of mankind.' 'A well-crafted biography of Doll, [who] single-handedly saved millions of lives with his findings.' - New Scientist 'As this fascinating and fair-minded biography makes clear, while Doll's political instincts were radical, he was nevertheless a conservative scientist, always cautious in causal inference. . . Impressive and engaging.' - International Journal of Epidemiology

Download or read book Vida de Ignacio Agramonte written by Juan José Expósito Casasús and published by Linkgua. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Address in Portuguese and Spanish written by Martin Hummel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-07-20 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume provides the first systematic comparative approach to the history of forms of address in Portuguese and Spanish, in their European and American varieties. Both languages share a common history—e.g., the personal union of Philipp II of Spain and Philipp I of Portugal; the parallel colonization of the Americas by Portugal and Spain; the long-term transformation from a feudal to a democratic system—in which crucial moments in the diachrony of address took place. To give one example, empirical data show that the puzzling late spread of Sp. usted ‘you (formal, polite)’ and Pt. você ‘you’ across America can be explained for both languages by the role of the political and military colonial administration. To explore these new insights, the volume relies on an innovative methodology, as it links traditional downstream diachrony with upstream diachronic reconstruction based on synchronic variation. Including theoretical reflections as well as fine-grained empirical studies, it brings together the most relevant authors in the field.
