  • Author : Ronaldo Bellazzini
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2010-07-08
  • ISBN : 1139488031
  • Pages : 385 pages

Download or read book X ray Polarimetry written by Ronaldo Bellazzini and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-08 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the advent of a new generation of detectors, X-ray polarimetry promises to join X-ray imaging, spectroscopy and timing as one of the main observational techniques in high energy astrophysics. This has renewed interest in the field, and indeed several polarimetric missions have recently been proposed. This volume provides a complete and up-to-date view of the subject for researchers in astrophysics. The contributors discuss the present status and perspectives of instruments, review current theoretical models, and examine future missions. As well as detailed papers, the book contains broad reviews that can be easily understood by astrophysicists new to the field.

Book Coronal Magnetometry

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sarah E. Gibson
  • Publisher : Frontiers Media SA
  • Release : 2017-07-11
  • ISBN : 2889452204
  • Pages : 174 pages

Download or read book Coronal Magnetometry written by Sarah E. Gibson and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetism defines the complex and dynamic solar corona. It determines the magnetic loop structure that dominates images of the corona, and stores the energy necessary to drive coronal eruptive phenomena and flare explosions. At great heights the corona transitions into the ever-outflowing solar wind, whose speed and three-dimensional morphology are controlled by the global coronal magnetic field. Coronal magnetism is thus at the heart of any understanding of the nature of the corona, and essential for predictive capability of how the Sun affects the Earth. Coronal magnetometry is a subject that requires a concerted effort to draw together the different strands of research happening around the world. Each method provides some information about the field, but none of them can be used to determine the full 3D field structure in the full volume of the corona. Thus, we need to combine them to understand the full picture. The purpose of this Frontiers Research Topic on Coronal Magnetometry is to provide a forum for comparing and coordinating these research methods, and for discussing future opportunities.

Book Ultraviolet and X ray Spectroscopy of the Solar Atmosphere

Download or read book Ultraviolet and X ray Spectroscopy of the Solar Atmosphere written by Kenneth J. H. Phillips and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-04 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The solar atmosphere, above the Sun's surface layers, reaches mega-kelvin temperatures and high levels of dynamic activity through processes involving a pervading magnetic field. This book explores one of the principal means of understanding the solar atmosphere, its ultraviolet and soft X-ray emission. The ultraviolet and X-ray spectra of the Sun's atmosphere provide valuable information about its nature - the heat and density of its various parts, its dynamics, and chemical composition. The principles governing spectral line and continuous emission, and how spectral studies lead to deductions about physical properties, are described, together with spacecraft instrumentation from Skylab, SolarMax, Yohkoh, SOHO, TRACE, and Hinode. With introductions to atomic physics and diagnostic techniques used by solar spectroscopists, a list of emission lines in ultraviolet and soft X-ray regions, and a glossary of terms, this is an ideal reference for graduate students and researchers in astrophysics and solar physics.
