Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sixth International Symposium of Paediatric Nephrology took place between 29 August and 2 September 1983 in Hannover, Federal Republic of Germany. It was organized on behalf of the International Paediatric Nephrology Association (IPNA), and sponsored by the regional societies of paediatric nephrology, i. e. the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ASPN), the European Society ofPaedi atric Nephrology (ESPN), the Japanese Society of Pediatric Nephrology (JSPN) and the Latin American Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ALANEPE). The five in ternational meetings preceding the Hannover symposium were held in Guadalajara 1968 (G. Gordillo-Paniagua), Paris 1971 (P. Royer, R. Habib, H. Mathieu), Washing ton 1974 (P.L. Calcagno, C.E. Hollerman), Helsinki 1977 (N. Hallman, O. Koski mies) and Philadelphia 1980 (A.B. Gruskin, M.E. Norman). The scientific programme of the Hannover meeting was a reflection of the many suggestions brought before the Programme Content Committee. It consisted of plenary sessions, symposia, workshops, short communications and posters. The lec turers at the plenary sessions were invited by the President according to the topics selected by the Programme Content Committee. The symposia dealing with special aspects of paediatric nephrology were organized in a combined effort by chairper sons selected as experts in the topic concerned and by the President. This volume contains all the papers from the four plenary sessions and 95% of the symposia presentations.

Book Molecular Mechanisms in the Pathogenesis of Idiopathic Nephrotic Syndrome

Download or read book Molecular Mechanisms in the Pathogenesis of Idiopathic Nephrotic Syndrome written by Kazunari Kaneko and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book reviews our current state of knowledge about the pathogenesis of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS), which comprises a heterogeneous group of diseases with distinct histological characteristics, such as minimal-change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS), focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), and idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN). As the word “idiopathic” indicates, the pathogenesis of INS remains unclear. Historically, T-cell dysfunction has been thought to play an important part in the pathogenesis of MCNS, while circulating vascular permeabilities have been believed to induce proteinuria in FSGS. The book further describes recent advances in molecular biology, which have allowed us to speculate on the interactions between visceral glomerular epithelial cells (podocytes) and the relative significance of several molecules in the pathogenesis of INS, such as reactive oxygen species, nuclear factor-kappa B, CD80, angiopoietin-like 4, cardiotrophin-like cytokine-1, and M-type phospholipase A2 receptor. The normally rapid pace of scientific progress occasionally devolves into a state of chaos, and the pathogenetic research on INS is one such case. This volume will help researchers and scientists to collaborate, share resources, and expedite the design of protocols to evaluate the putative factors.

Book Nephrotoxic Mechanisms of Drugs and Environmental Toxins

Download or read book Nephrotoxic Mechanisms of Drugs and Environmental Toxins written by George A. Porter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of the offending toxicants to be reviewed in this volume were devel oped to help mankind, and it is only with prolonged or widespread application that their adverse effects have been recognized. Conversely, in the case of pre scrip tion drugs, there has been an attempt to identify the adverse effects in advance and incorporate these risks into the decision of approval for human consumption. Unfortunately, for those drugs in which recognized injury occurs only after prolonged use, such appraisals are made in retrospect. Despite this, most renal injury induced by drugs or toxicants can be either prevented by excluding drugs with unacceptable side effects or interrupted by eliminating the offending agent once damage is manifested. The fact that prevention, reversibility, or arrest of renal injury is possible provided a major impetus for this publication. Since no international registry for nephrotoxic injury exists, estimates of incidence must rely on less than ideal sources. Recently I, together with Dr. William Bennett, summarized a survey of the frequency of various categories of nephrologic disease (Porter and Bennett, 1981). Based on this survey, we projected that in nearly one of ten patients seeking nephrologic consultation a nephrotoxic etiology may be involved. Of cases of end-stage renal disease, between 3 and 4% are due to drug nephrotoxicity, according to recent published results(European Dialysis and Transplant Association, 1979). For acute renal failure, antibiotics and contrast agents persist as major offending agents, while for chronic renal failure, analgesics remain a worldwide problem.
