Download or read book Diagnostic Ultrasound and Animal Reproduction written by M.A.M. Taverne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of ultrasonic imaging techniques for diagnostic purposes in veteri nary medicine and animal science has lagged far behind their use in human medicine. In the area of domestic animal reproduction, diagnostic ultrasono graphy has a relatively short history. Reports on B-mode scanning first appeared as late as 1969, when Stouffer and co-workers used it for counting foetal numbers in late gestation sheep. After Lindahl had re-evaluated the potential of two-dimensional ultrasonography for pregnancy diagnosis in sheep in 1976, results of the first large scale field-trials by Fowler and Wilkins on predicting foetal numbers during the first half of gestation in sheep were published as recently as 1980. In this year also the first paper, by Palmer and co-workers, on ultrasonic scanning of the uterus and ovaries in the mare appeared. The improvement of diagnostics which was achieved by the application of this technique is illustrated by its present routine use in clinical equine practice and sheep breeding. Besides offe ring an accurate early pregnancy diagnosis in species such as the horse, cow, sheep, goat, pig and dog, ultrasonography enables the visualization of ovarian and uterine structures for the identification of both physiological and pathological conditions. In this way it replaces or supplements the more common diagnostic techniques used by the general practitioner so far. Ultrasonography has also opened several new lines of research for clini cians and research workers.

Download or read book Considerations Underlying the Use of Ultrasound to Detect Gallstones and Foreign Bodies in Tissue written by George D. Ludwig and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The densities of a number of gallstones have been determined and found to vary between 0.82 and 1.10 gm/cc. The velocity of ultrasound through gallstone slabs, beef tissue, and living human muscles has been measured. The velocity through the gallstones varied between 1400 and 2200 m/sec. The velocity through the calf, thigh, and arm muscles of five subjects was found to vary between 1490 and 1610 m/sec with a mean value of 1540 m/sec. The mean velocity through beef tissue at 20-21C was 1540 m/sec. From these data the characteristic acoustic impedance of gallstones and of tissue was determined. Values between 130,000 and 230,000 gm/sq cm/sec were found for the gallstones measured. The acoustic impedance of tissue consisting mostly of muscle is 160,000 to 170,000 gm/sq cm/sec. The energy reflection coefficient for a gallstone in tissue was calculated, and the theoretical feasibility of detecting gallstones by the use of ultrasonic echo-ranging was established. Large signals were obtained from gallstones implanted in the back muscles and in the gallbladders of dogs. A frequency range of 1.0 and 2.5 megacycles has been found to be optimum for an ultrasonic instrument for diagnostic purposes. Penetration of soft tissues for 15 cm or more is afforded, without reaching damaging intensity levels. The wave length in tissue 0.6 to 1.5 mm. provides adequate resolution for the detection of gallstones and most foreign bodies. The possibility of detecting foreign bodies and tumors by use of the echo-ranging principle is discussed. (Author).

Download or read book Neurobiology of Chemical Communication written by Carla Mucignat-Caretta and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-02-14 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intraspecific communication involves the activation of chemoreceptors and subsequent activation of different central areas that coordinate the responses of the entire organism—ranging from behavioral modification to modulation of hormones release. Animals emit intraspecific chemical signals, often referred to as pheromones, to advertise their presence to members of the same species and to regulate interactions aimed at establishing and regulating social and reproductive bonds. In the last two decades, scientists have developed a greater understanding of the neural processing of these chemical signals. Neurobiology of Chemical Communication explores the role of the chemical senses in mediating intraspecific communication. Providing an up-to-date outline of the most recent advances in the field, it presents data from laboratory and wild species, ranging from invertebrates to vertebrates, from insects to humans. The book examines the structure, anatomy, electrophysiology, and molecular biology of pheromones. It discusses how chemical signals work on different mammalian and non-mammalian species and includes chapters on insects, Drosophila, honey bees, amphibians, mice, tigers, and cattle. It also explores the controversial topic of human pheromones. An essential reference for students and researchers in the field of pheromones, this is also an ideal resource for those working on behavioral phenotyping of animal models and persons interested in the biology/ecology of wild and domestic species.
