Book Ultrasonic Characterization of Solid Liquid Suspensions

Download or read book Ultrasonic Characterization of Solid Liquid Suspensions written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using an ultrasonic field, properties of a solid liquid suspension such as through-transmission attenuation, backscattering, and diffuse field are measured. These properties are converted to quantities indicating the strength of different loss mechanisms (such as absorption, single scattering and multiple scattering) among particles in the suspension. Such separation of the loss mechanisms can allow for direct comparison of the attenuating effects of the mechanisms. These comparisons can also indicate a model most likely to accurately characterize the suspension and can aid in determination of properties such as particle size, concentration, and density of the suspension.

Book Characterization of Solid Liquid Suspensions Utilizing Non Invasive Ultrasonic Measurements

Download or read book Characterization of Solid Liquid Suspensions Utilizing Non Invasive Ultrasonic Measurements written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid, on-line characterization of the particle size and concentration of moderate to highly concentrated slurries is required for efficient waste remediation at the DOE complexes. This paper discusses the advancements achieved under the Environmental Management Science Program to accurately characterize high-level waste at the high concentrations expected at the DOE complexes. In addition, the results are applicable to efficient process measurement and control in many chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. Existing methods for determining the particle size and concentration of non-dilute slurries based on ultrasonic attenuation can become inaccurate due to the complex interactions of ultrasonic waves with the constituents of the slurries and the necessity for very careful transducer alignment. Two measurements that help to overcome these difficulties are the ultrasonic backscattering and diffuse field. The backscattering measurement is attractive because viscous, thermal and inertial effects have small contributions to the backscattering. In addition, the backscattering theories are simpler than attenuation theories and lend themselves to more stable inversion processes. Furthermore, the measurements of backscattering measurement do not require long travel distances and can be made with a single transducer thus eliminating alignment problems. We will present ultrasonic measurements and theoretical comparisons on solid liquid suspensions designed to elucidate the particle size and concentration at high concentration relevant to the high level waste at the DOE complexes.

Book Characterization of Liquids Nano and Microparticulates and Porous Bodies using Ultrasound

Download or read book Characterization of Liquids Nano and Microparticulates and Porous Bodies using Ultrasound written by Andrei S. Dukhin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-09-03 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two key words define the scope of this book: 'ultrasound' and 'colloids'. Historically, there has been little real communication between disciples of these two fields. Although there is a large body of literature devoted to ultrasound phenomenon in colloids, there is little recognition that such phenomena may be of real importance for both the development, and application, of Colloid Science. From the other side, colloid scientists have not embraced acoustics as an important tool for characterizing colloids. The lack of any serious dialogue between these scientific fields is the biggest motivation behind this book. For colloidal systems, ultrasound provides information on three important areas of particle characterization: Particle sizing, Rheology, and Electrokinetics. This book primarily targets scientists who consider colloids as their major object of interest. As such we emphasize those aspects of acoustics that are important for colloids, and thereby neglect many others. On the other hand, scientists working with ultrasound who are already familiar with the subject will find several important new developments.

Book Characterization of Liquids Dispersions Emulsions and Porous Materials Using Ultrasound

Download or read book Characterization of Liquids Dispersions Emulsions and Porous Materials Using Ultrasound written by Andrei S. Dukhin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-08-08 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characterization of Liquids, Dispersions, Emulsions and Porous Materials Using Ultrasound, Third Edition, presents a scientific background for novel methods of characterizing homogeneous and heterogeneous liquids (dispersions, emulsions, and gels) as well as porous materials. Homogeneous liquids are characterized in rheological terms, whereas particle-size distribution and zeta potential are parameters of heterogeneous liquids. For porous materials, porosity, pore size, and zeta potential are output characteristics. These methods are based on ultrasound, which opens an opportunity for simplifying the sample preparation by eliminating dilution. This in turn, makes measurements faster, easier, precise, suitable for accurate quality control, PAT, and formulation of complex systems. This book provides theoretical background of acoustics, rheology, colloid science, electrochemistry, and other relevant scientific fields, describing principles of existing instrumentation and, in particular, commercially available instruments. Finally, the book features an extensive list of existing applications. Presents a theoretical multi-disciplinary background of several new ultrasound analytical techniques in one place Validates the theoretical basis of several new analytical techniques Compares the efficiency and applications of various ultrasound techniques Lists many ultrasound applications in colloid chemistry Contains an extensive bibliography on this multidisciplinary topic

Book Food Macromolecules and Colloids

Download or read book Food Macromolecules and Colloids written by Eric Dickinson and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food macromolecules play a crucial role in the formulation of a wide range of food products such as beverages, bread, cheese, dressings, desserts, ice-cream, and spreads. This book presents the very latest research in the area and is unique in covering both proteins and polysaccharides in the same volume. Specifically it describes recent experimental and theoretical macromolecules in solutions, suspensions, gels, glasses, emulsions and foams. Food Macromolecules and Colloids takes a fundamental approach to complex systems, providing an understanding of the physico-chemical role of macromolecular interactions in controlling the behaviour of real and model food colloids. It gives special attention to adsorbed protein layers, the stability of emulsions and foams, and the viscoelasticity and phase behaviour of mixed polysaccharide systems, as well as to the rheology and microstructure of biopolymer gels, and the interaction of proteins with lipids and aroma compounds. This attractive, typeset publication gives exceptionally broad international coverage of the subject and will make interesting reading for postgraduates, lecturers and researchers with interests in food science, surface and colloid science and polymer science.
