Book Effects of Pressure and Dielectric Constant on Sound Absorption in Magnesium Sulfate Solutions

Download or read book Effects of Pressure and Dielectric Constant on Sound Absorption in Magnesium Sulfate Solutions written by Frederick Hendrick Fisher and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The simple dissociation model proposed by Bies (J. Chem. Phys. 23:428, 1955) to explain acoustic absorption in MgSO4 solutions does not give a complete quantitative description of experimental results in aqueous and dioxane-water solvents at atmospheric pressure. An attempt was made to explore the reasons for the failure of Bies' theory by measuring acoustic absorption as a function of pressure in MgSO4 solutions with two values for the dielectric constant. At the high concentration used, 0.5 M, a change in the dielectric constant from D = 78.5 (water) to D = 56.5 (25% dioxane-water) was accompanied by negligible changes in the magnitude and pressure dependence of the absorption. This behavior, together with that observed by Bies at low concentrati ns and atmospheric pressure, is consistent with the existence of an intermediate reaction, before dissociation, which is responsible for acoustic absorption. Velocity as a function of pressure, and the relaxation frequency at atmospheric pressure, are given for the 25% dioxane-water solution. (Author).

Book Ultrasonic Studies of Diffusion Controlled Ionic Association dissociation

Download or read book Ultrasonic Studies of Diffusion Controlled Ionic Association dissociation written by Louis Goldfarb and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasonic absorption measurements have been made in solutions of copper sulfate, magnesium sulfate, and cobalt sulfate over the frequency range 45 to 550 MHz using pulse modulated waves and a send-receive technique. The excess relaxational absorption data were computer processed and the relaxation times calculated. These results indicate that the high frequency relaxation for di-divalent electrolytes occurs at substantially higher frequencies than reported by earlier workers and is concentration dependent. On the basis of the values for partial molal volume changes, energies of activation, concentration dependence, deuteration effects, and foreign electrolyte effects, the high frequency absorption peak has been attributed to the diffusion controlled second order process leading to the formation of an encounter complex. The report also discusses possible difficulties arising from the lack of data for the non-relaxing portion of the absorption with the ionic constituents present. (Author).

Book Ultrasonic Absorption in Electrolytic Solutions

Download or read book Ultrasonic Absorption in Electrolytic Solutions written by Leroy George Jackopin and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kinetics of fast reactions in solution have been studied by means of ultrasonic relaxation techniques. The rate constants for a simple ionization-association process (acetic acid) were determined from ultrasonic absorption measurements and found to compare favorably with those evaluated by other methods (Wren effect II, electrochemical). Ultrasonic relaxation has been re-examined in a 2-2 electrolyte (MnSO4) in order to resolve discrepancies in published data. The new results are in good agreement and complement data recently published by the ultrasonic groups at Gottingen and Heidelberg. A non-linear regression technique developed as part of the present research, has been used to analyze these data. Two relaxation frequencies are adequate to describe these data if the non-relaxing absorption component is treated as an adjustable parameter (in contrast to the three or four relaxation frequencies reported earlier by other groups). Ultrasonic relaxation has also been studied in CdI2 solutions and compared with NMR data. (Author).

Book Absorption and Dispersion of Ultrasonic Waves

Download or read book Absorption and Dispersion of Ultrasonic Waves written by Karl F. Herzfeld and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Absorption and Dispersion of Ultrasonic Waves focuses on the influence of ultrasonics on molecular processes in liquids and gases, including hydrodynamics, energy exchange, and chemical reactions. The book first offers information on the Stokes-Navier equations of hydrodynamics, as well as equations of motion, viscosity, formal introduction of volume viscosity, and linearized wave equation for a nonviscous fluid. The manuscript then ponders on energy exchange between internal and external degrees of freedom as relaxation phenomenon; effect of slow energy exchange on sound propagation; different ways of evaluating the dispersion curve; and exact calculation of absorption and dispersion. The text examines the effects of chemical reactions, thermodynamic theory of relaxation, and mixtures. The book also evaluates the absorption of high intensity sound waves, ratio of relaxation absorption to classical absorption at maximum, and gas mixtures. Discussions also focus on translational relaxation in monatomic gases, linear triatomic molecules, and results for rotational relaxation. The manuscript is a dependable source of data for readers interested in the absorption and dispersion of ultrasonic waves.

Book Analysis of Ultrasonic Absorption Measurements in Liquids at High Pressures

Download or read book Analysis of Ultrasonic Absorption Measurements in Liquids at High Pressures written by Walter H. Johnson (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method, complete with error analysis, is given for determining the absorption coefficient for ultrasonic pulses (alpha) and the loss at the mirror and crystal (gamma) as a function of pressure. Results of the analysis are presented for distilled water as well as n-propanol. An expression for the pressure-dependent mirror-crystal loss is derived and checked against the experimental values obtained. In addition, a second method, which uses the expression for gamma, is discussed which enables one to obtain the absorption coefficient more directly from fewer measurements. (Author).
