Book Ultrafast Effects in Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers and Their Exploitation for All optical Logic

Download or read book Ultrafast Effects in Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers and Their Exploitation for All optical Logic written by Robin Paul Giller and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high-speed physical processes that occur in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), and facilitate the use of these devices in ultrafast all-optical switches, are examined experimentally and numerically. SOA-based switches are candidates for optical signal processing functionalities in future high-speed telecommunications networks, and several novel applications that exploit the SOA{u2019}s ultrafast nonlinearities (in particular gain and phase modulations) are presented and discussed. A pump-probe test bed for measuring the responses of the SOA gain and phase characteristics to intense optical pulses in real time is built and described. A numerical impulse response model is developed to simulate the gain and phase responses observed. Qualitative and quantitative differences between the SOA gain and phase response are detailed and explained, and the impact of these differences on the SOA{u2019}s effectiveness in high-speed optical switches is assessed. The gain and phase responses of a number of SOAs with different active region dimensions are observed, with particular attention paid to the response recovery rate, which ultimately dictates the high-speed capacity and performance of SOA-based optical switches. The recovery rates are compared to assess any dependence of the response speed on the active region design. A number of novel all-optical signal processing configurations that incorporate SOAs are presented and their performances evaluated. In particular a novel high-speed all-optical XOR gate is described. Also, more importantly, a novel device arrangement, consisting of two SOAs separated by an optical band pass filter, that improves the response speed of the constituent SOAs by a factor of 4, is described in terms of its operation principle and potential applications. This so-called {u2018}turbo-switch{u2019} is employed in all-optical logic configurations, in place of the traditional single SOA, and demonstrates an improvement in the bit rate capacity of each logic function examined. Optical signal processing at rates of up to 170Gbit/s is demonstrated.

Book Advances in Optical Amplifiers

Download or read book Advances in Optical Amplifiers written by Paul Urquhart and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-02-14 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical amplifiers play a central role in all categories of fibre communications systems and networks. By compensating for the losses exerted by the transmission medium and the components through which the signals pass, they reduce the need for expensive and slow optical-electrical-optical conversion. The photonic gain media, which are normally based on glass- or semiconductor-based waveguides, can amplify many high speed wavelength division multiplexed channels simultaneously. Recent research has also concentrated on wavelength conversion, switching, demultiplexing in the time domain and other enhanced functions. Advances in Optical Amplifiers presents up to date results on amplifier performance, along with explanations of their relevance, from leading researchers in the field. Its chapters cover amplifiers based on rare earth doped fibres and waveguides, stimulated Raman scattering, nonlinear parametric processes and semiconductor media. Wavelength conversion and other enhanced signal processing functions are also considered in depth. This book is targeted at research, development and design engineers from teams in manufacturing industry, academia and telecommunications service operators.

Book Some Advanced Functionalities of Optical Amplifiers

Download or read book Some Advanced Functionalities of Optical Amplifiers written by Sisir Garai and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the explosion of information traffic, the role of optical amplifiers becomes very significant in fulfilling the demand of faster optical signals and data processing in the field of communication. This book covers different advanced functionalities of optical amplifiers as well as their emerging applications in optical communication networks. The first chapter deals with an efficient and validated time-domain numerical modelling of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) and SOA-based circuits, while the second chapter is based on the working of gallium nitride-based semiconductor optical amplifiers. The role of SOAs for the next generation of high-data-rate optical packet-switched network is presented in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 covers the all-optical semiconductor optical amplifier based on quantum dots (QD-SOA) and its function as an arithmetic processor. In Chapter 5, the authors have presented the role of SOAs in intensity modulation of the optical pulses and their use in deterministic timing jitter and peak pulse power equalization analysis. In Chapter 6, the investigation of broadband S-band to L-band erbium-doped fibre amplifier (EDFA) module is presented, and Chapter 7 includes the optimized design technique of Yb3+/Er3+-codoped phosphate microring resonator amplifiers. All selected chapters are very interesting and well organized, and I hope they will be of great value to postgraduate students, researchers, academics and anyone seeking to understand the advanced functionalities of optical amplifiers in the present scenario.

Book Linear and Nonlinear Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers for Next Generation Optical Networks

Download or read book Linear and Nonlinear Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers for Next Generation Optical Networks written by René Bonk and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are studied with a view to linear and nonlinear applications in next-generation optical networks. Quantum-dot SOAs can be optimized for linear amplification of signals with different modulation formats and multiplexing techniques. Conversely, bulk SOAs can be easily optimized for operation in the nonlinear regime. However, due to the fast carrier recovery times in QD SOAs we also look into nonlinear applications with these devices.
