Book Ultra wideband Error Modeling for Improved Localization

Download or read book Ultra wideband Error Modeling for Improved Localization written by Elizabeth Pedlow and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultra-wideband (UWB) is a modern range measurement technology which can provide high-speed, low-cost ranging, however UWB measurements can be difficult to model. In an effort to increase accuracy of localization using UWB, this thesis develops models to better understand the complex error patterns of UWB range measurements, specifically how separation distance and relative angle between modules affect error. These models are used to develop three error prediction and correction methods to improve localization: (1) range-based error correction, (2) angle-based error correction, and (3) fused range-angle error correction. While it was found that decreasing mean measurement error does not always decrease localization error, the lowest measurement error and lowest localization error both resulted from the fused error correction method. The fused error model combines the separation distance and relative angle models to predict and correct for range error, decreasing the mean measurement error by over 80%, the mean localization error by approximately 35% when using least squares estimation, and by approximately 56% when smoothing the trajectory with a Kalman Filter.

Book Ultra wideband Based Indoor Localization Using Sensor Fusion and Support Vector Machine

Download or read book Ultra wideband Based Indoor Localization Using Sensor Fusion and Support Vector Machine written by Zhuoqi Zeng and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2020-12-21 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To further improve the NLOS detection and mitigation performance for Ultra-wideband (UWB) system, this thesis systematically investigates the UWB LOS/NLOS errors. The LOS errors are evaluated in different environments and with different distances. Different blockage materials and blockage conditions are considered for NLOS errors. The UWB signal propagation is also investigated. Furthermore, the relationships between the CIRs and the accurate/inaccurate range measurements are theoretically discussed in three different situations: ideal LOS path, small-scale fading: multipath and NLOS path. These theoretical relationships are validated with real measured CIRs in the Bosch Shanghai office environment. Based on the error and signal propagation investigation results, four different algorithms are proposed for four different scenarios to improve the NLOS identification accuracy. After the comparison of the localization performance for TOA/TDOA, it is found that on normal office floor, TOA works better than TDOA. In harsh industrial environments, where NLOS frequently occurs, TDOA is more suitable than TOA. Thus, in the first scenario, the position estimation is realized with TOA on the office floor, while in the second scenario, a novel approach to combined TOA and TDOA with accurate range and range difference selection is proposed in the harsh industrial environment. The optimization of the feature combination and parameters in machine learning algorithms for accurate measurement detection is discussed for both scenarios. For the third and fourth scenarios, the UWB/IMU fusion system stays in focus. Instead of detecting the NLOS outliers by assuming that the error distributions are Gaussian, the accurate measurement detection is realized based on the triangle inequality theorem. All the proposed approaches are tested with the collected measurements from the developed UWB system. The position estimation of these approaches has better accuracy than that of the traditional methods.

Book Indoor Cooperative Localization for Ultra Wideband Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Indoor Cooperative Localization for Ultra Wideband Wireless Sensor Networks written by Nayef Alsindi and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract (Partial): In this dissertation, we first present the results of measurement and modeling of UWB TOA-based ranging in different indoor multipath environments. We provide detailed characterization of the spatial behavior of ranging, where we focus on the statistics of the ranging error in the presence and absence of the DP and evaluate the pathloss behavior in the former case which is important for indoor geolocation coverage characterization. Parameters of the ranging error probability distributions and pathloss models are provided for different environments: traditional office, modern office, residential and manufacturing floor; and different ranging scenarios: indoor-to-indoor (ITI), outdoor-to-indoor (OTI) and roof-to-indoor (RTI). Based on the developed empirical models of UWB TOA-based OTI and ITI ranging, we derive and analyze cooperative localization bounds for WSNs in the different indoor multipath environments. First, we highlight the need for cooperative localization in indoor applications. Then we provide comprehensive analysis of the factors affecting localization accuracy such as network and ranging model parameters. Finally we introduce a novel distributed cooperative localization algorithm for indoor WSNs. The Cooperative LOcalization with Quality of estimation (CLOQ) algorithm integrates and disseminates the quality of the TOA ranging and position information in order to improve the localization performance for the entire WSN. The algorithm has the ability to reduce the effects of the cluttered indoor environments by identifying and mitigating the associated ranging errors. In addition the information regarding the integrity of the position estimate is further incorporated in the iterative distributed localization process which further reduces error escalation in the network. The simulation results of CLOQ algorithm are then compared against the derived G-CRLB, which shows substantial improvements in the localization performance.

Book Location Fingerprinting for Ultra wideband Systems

Download or read book Location Fingerprinting for Ultra wideband Systems written by Christoph Steiner and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2010 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, a novel radio frequency based position location concept is proposed and studied, which provides accurate position estimates in dense multipath and non-line-of-sight propagation environments. The main idea is to apply the location fingerprinting paradigm of position location to channel impulse responses with ultra-wide bandwidth. The large bandwidth enables a fine temporal resolution of the multipath propagation channel, which in turn acts as a unique location fingerprint of the positions of transmitter and receiver. At first a location fingerprinting framework is developed from a communication theoretic perspective. Then location fingerprinting with two ultra-wideband receiver structures is studied. The first receiver is able to perform channel estimation and the second receiver is a low complexity generalized energy detection receiver. Their position location performance is analyzed theoretically and experimentally with measured data and it is shown that decimeter accuracy is achievable with both receiver structures in dense multipath and non-line-of-sight propagation environments. However, this experimental performance analysis reveals also a major shortcoming of the proposed method: In order to achieve high position location accuracy, a large amount of training data is required. In order to increase the efficiency of the training phase two promising techniques are proposed in this thesis. The first method is based on the idea of joint localization and training. The second technique is based on a geometrical channel model and utilizes a priori knowledge about the geometry of the propagation environment The thesis concludes with a summary of the major findings and with a list of interesting future research topics in the field of location fingerprinting for ultra-wideband systems.
