Download or read book Physical and Chemical Processes in the Aquatic Environment written by Erik R. Christensen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is need in environmental research for a book on fresh waters including rivers and lakes. Compared with other books on the topic, this book has a unique outline in that it follows pollution from sources to impact. Included in the text is the treatment of various tracers, ranging from pathogens to stable isotopes of elements and providing a comprehensive discussion which is lacking in many other books on pollution control of natural waters. Geophysical processes are discussed emphasizing mixing of water, interaction between water and the atmosphere, and sedimentation processes. Important geochemistry processes occurring in natural waters are described as are the processes specific to nutrients, organic pollutants, metals, and pathogens in subsequent chapters. Each of these chapters includes an introduction on the selected groups, followed by the physicochemical properties which are the most relevant to their behavior in natural waters, and the theories and models to describe their speciation, transport and transformation. The book also includes the most up to date information including a discussion on emerging pollutants such as brominated and phosphate flame retardants, perflurochemicals, and pharmaceutical and personal care products. Due to its importance an ecotoxicology chapter has been included featuring molecular biological methods, nanoparticles, and comparison of the basis of biotic ligand model with the Weibull dose-response model. Finally, the last chapter briefly summarizes the regulations on ambient water quality.

Book excerpt: The first comprehensive account of these important environmental interactions, this book describes the binding reactions, how they can be mathematically modelled, and how this knowledge is used to interpret environmental phenomena in soils, waters and sediments. A valuable resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, environmental scientists, ecologists and geochemists.
Download or read book Metal Specification Theory Analysis Application written by James R. Kramer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1988-09 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an up-to-date presentation of metal speciation in soils, sediments, and water by specialists in analytical chemistry, environmental engineering, oceanography, nutrition, and soil chemistry. fate and effects-measurements-and modeling-are the major themes in this book, with overviews and examples of the significance of metal speciation to solving environmental problems, and recommendations for additional research areas. This new reference discusses separation methods, extraction techniques; bioavailability as related to humans, plants, and aquatic organisms; applications showing importance of speciation in groundwater; industrial waste treatment systems, marines and lakes, solid-solution interface; fate of organic pollutants; nature of surfaces; binding of metals to oxides and sediments (dissolved and particulate matter); interpretations of reactions in multi-ligand systems.

Download or read book Organic geochemistry of natural waters written by E.M. Thurman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1985-04-30 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written as a reference on organic substances in natural waters and as a supplementary text for graduate students in water chemistry. The chapters address five topics: amount, origin, nature, geochemistry, and characterization of organic carbon. Of these topics, the main themes are the amount and nature of dissolved organic carbon in natural waters (mainly fresh water, although seawater is briefly discussed). It is hoped that the reader is familiar with organic chemistry, but it is not necessary. The first part of the book is a general overview of the amount and general nature of dissolved organic carbon. Over the past 10 years there has been an exponential increase in knowledge on organic substances in water, which is the result of money directed toward the research of organic compounds, of new methods of analysis (such as gas chromatography and mass spectrometry), and most importantly, the result of more people working in this field. Because of this exponential increase in knowledge, there is a need to pull together and summarize the data that has accumulated from many disciplines over the last decade.
