Book excerpt: In this collection, Jacqueline Osherow gives us perfectly formed, musical poems that glide between the worlds of art, architecture, literature, and religion. Traveling through Europe, Tel Aviv, and New York, Osherow observes with a keen eye the details of objects -- beautiful buildings and ancient artifacts -- and of the conversations and interactions she has with others. Finely constructed and always engaging, her poems uncover the startling truths of memory and coax our own forgotten moments from the recesses of the mind.

Book The Atheist Milton

Download or read book The Atheist Milton written by Michael E. Bryson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basing his contention on two different lines of argument, Michael Bryson posits that John Milton-possibly the most famous 'Christian' poet in English literary history-was, in fact, an atheist. First, based on his association with Arian ideas (denial of the doctrine of the Trinity), his argument for the de Deo theory of creation (which puts him in line with the materialism of Spinoza and Hobbes), and his Mortalist argument that the human soul dies with the human body, Bryson argues that Milton was an atheist by the commonly used definitions of the period. And second, as the poet who takes a reader from the presence of an imperious, monarchical God in Paradise Lost, to the internal-almost Gnostic-conception of God in Paradise Regained, to the absence of any God whatsoever in Samson Agonistes, Milton moves from a theist (with God) to something much more recognizable as a modern atheist position (without God) in his poetry. Among the author's goals in The Atheist Milton is to account for tensions over the idea of God which, in Bryson's view, go all the way back to Milton's earliest poetry. In this study, he argues such tensions are central to Milton's poetry-and to any attempt to understand that poetry on its own terms.

Book excerpt: After the ravages of the Great Civil War in heaven, God replaces both the dead and Fallen to fill the vacancies their duties demand. These replacements are slightly modified to ensure revolution would not occur again. Viziel is the first reborn, suspected by many to be a close replica of Lucifer himself, and thus a horrific danger to all of heaven. His assigned duties are withheld from him until he bow before the very throne of God, an allowance granted only to the most honorable of God's servants or most vicious of traitors. Before God's throne he is named the Angel of Chaos. Unfortunately, because chaos naturally opposes God's providential order, God has no choice but to command Viziel's betrayal. If Viziel refuses the order he is treacherous, if he obeys, a traitor nonetheless. The commandment is a paradox, which cannot be defied. Due to his unavoidable transgression, Viziel is sentenced to execution so as not to feed Lucifer with new recruits. In his imprisonment, before a formal facade of a trial, a superior informs Viziel that his execution is meant as a symbolic victory to God as overcoming his chaotic forces. Viziel's execution does not end in death, but reincarnation, where he will again be reformed, assigned as Angel of Chaos, and executed for his natural defiance once more. This damned reincarnation is eternal. God imposes this perpetual punishment to reinforce his never ending control over chaos and secure the safety of his providential design as well as all the beings within it, especially His most prized - humanity. Viziel, as Angel of Chaos, however, has a unique power to invoke discord. As a result, his execution goes horribly wrong. Chaos is unleashed to fulfill his own agenda. This is the story of the beginning of his revenge."

Book Paradise Lost

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Milton
  • Publisher : Mercer University Press
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 0881462365
  • Pages : 545 pages

Download or read book Paradise Lost written by John Milton and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Milton (1608-1674) was arguably one of the best-read persons of his epoch. Miltonâ¿¿s commonplace book reveals that in addition to the thoroughly humanistic education that he received at Trinity College Cambridge (1625-1632), he also conducted an extensively broad reading program of his own immediately after concluding his university studies which included forays into nearly every branch of learning in a period that he affectionately referred to as his â¿¿studious retirementâ¿¿ (1632-38). For over 400 years, many literary critics have declared this monumental work, Paradise Lost, to be the greatest poem in the English language. Dr. Stallard contends that a full understanding of the Bible as the poemâ¿¿s primary inter-text is essential to appreciating the poem in its Puritan context. John Miltonâ¿¿s Bible is lavishly annotated with Biblical references that demonstrates that Milton was mining a wide variety of translations including the 1540 Great Bible, the 1560 Geneva Bible, the Bishops Bible of 1568, the Douay-Rheims of 1582, and the revised Authorized Version of 1612. This Biblically annotated edition of Paradise Lost will be useful to all scholars and students of Milton alike. That a lack of familiarity with the Bible should discourage students of English literature from reading the pinnacle achievement of one of the finest poets and minds in the English language is both sad and avoidable. This edition makes Milton more accessible, comprehensible, and enjoyable for everyone.

Download or read book The Poems of Shelley Volume Six written by Carlene Adamson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-20 with total page 727 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822) was one of the major poets of the English Romantic period. This is the final volume of a six-volume edition of The Poems of Shelley, which aims to present all of Shelley’s poems in chronological order and with full annotation. Date and circumstances of composition are provided for each poem and all manuscript and printed sources relevant to establishing an authoritative text are freshly examined and assessed. Headnotes and footnotes furnish the personal, literary, historical and scientific information necessary to an informed reading of Shelley’s varied and allusive verse. Most of the poems in the present volume were composed between late January 1822 and Shelley’s death on 8 July 1822. These include the lyrics to Jane Williams, Fragments of an Unfinished Drama and The Triumph of Life as well as translations from Goethe’s Faust (1822) and Calderón’s El mágico prodigioso. The appendices include editions of Poetical Essay on the Existing State of Things (1811), a poem made publicly accessible by the Bodleian Libraries in 2015 for the first time since its publication, and translations by Shelley from Goethe’s Faust (1815), Aeschylus’ Prometheus Bound (1817) and Homer’s Odyssey (probably 1817). In addition to accompanying commentaries, there are extensive bibliographies to the poems, a chronological table of Shelley’s life and publications, and indexes to titles and first lines. Now completed, this is the most comprehensive edition of Shelley’s poetry available to students and scholars.

Book Imperishable Glory Or God and the little gods

Download or read book Imperishable Glory Or God and the little gods written by John Thwaytes and published by Notion Press. This book was released on with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I think it was Lobsang Rampa who said that the littlest gods are the most powerful of all the gods. Perhaps by the end of this chapter you will understand why that is true. On the cover of this book I have given an artist's impression of what a typical little god looks like at its third stage when it is in the space/time universe and just about ready to hook up with a group of friends and form a particle of matter/energy. The tiny God Particle is the basic substance that creates and forms all types of matter/energy, and without it no matter/energy of any sort can exist. It originates as part of God the Father in pre-reality, where it is almost the same as a particle of thought, and it is constituted in inexhaustible trillions, held in reserve and fed into action by the Unqualified Absolute and the Deity Absolute from the Circle of Infinity in nether Paradise. Each of these particles is a carrier of the power and Will of God for the various roles of matter/energy in Creation.

Book Unleashing Usury

Download or read book Unleashing Usury written by Richard Westra and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2016-04-03 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Usury laid medieval society to waste. Western civilization was saved by the rise of capitalism, which tamed the activities of money lending, and endowed them with socially redeeming value, tethering finance to expanding production of material goods and increased social wealth. Now, as the 21st century begins, bloating tides of money with no possibility of ever being converted into real capital wash over the world. Finance again has turned to its dark side, using money to make money with no socially redeeming purpose. Such is the endgame of economies managed by capitalists without capitalism. As Marx foresaw, capitalist society, like all others, is destined to be outpaced by history as the conditions of its existence decompose and become a drag on the human future. Either we will succeed in bringing about new politico-economic structures—or civilization will collapse into barbarism, just as usury broke it down in the past.
