Book Dream Cruising Destinations

Download or read book Dream Cruising Destinations written by Vanessa Bird and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most yachtsmen dream about cruising to an exotic destination; this is the book that will turn dreamers into planners. 24 classic cruises are fully mapped, measured and costed, showing how they are perfectly possible whatever your skill level. From weekend cruises around the British Isles to a voyage to Antarctica, and from Greek island cruises to an escape to the Virgin Islands, this book explores where to go, why, how to get there and what to expect en route. The book breaks down each cruise into important considerations, such as what type of boat is needed, what level of skill or qualifications are required, whether it is a suitable journey to undertake with a young family, what possible dangers might influence any decision (from extreme weather to the threat of piracy), and most obviously, cost. Covering popular, exotic cruising destinations such as Thailand and the Virgin Islands, as well as unexpected, almost secret routes along the US Intracoastal Waterway and French canals, as well as proper adventures (including both Atlantic and Pacific crossings), this inspirational may be the starting point for the voyage of a lifetime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Highland bagpipe, widely considered 'Scotland's national instrument', is one of the most recognized icons of traditional music in the world. It is also among the least understood. However, since the bagpipeOCOs unprecedented surge in public visibility and scholarly attention since the 1990s, a greater interest in the emic has led the consideration of both the globalization of Highland piping and piping as rooted in local culture. The contributors of this collection discuss the bagpipe in oral and written history, anthropology, ethnography, musicology, material culture and modal aesthetics. The book will appeal to ethnomusicologists, anthropologists, as well as those interested in international bagpipe studies and traditions."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook brings together both new and traditional research methods in Human Computer Interaction (HCI). Research methods include interviews and observations, ethnography, grounded theory and analysis of digital traces of behavior. Readers will gain an understanding of the type of knowledge each method provides, its disciplinary roots and how each contributes to understanding users, user behavior and the context of use. The background context, clear explanations and sample exercises make this an ideal textbook for graduate students, as well as a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners. 'It is an impressive collection in terms of the level of detail and variety.' (M. Sasikumar, ACM Computing Reviews #CR144066)

    Book Details:
  • Author : Antti Oulasvirta
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018-01-10
  • ISBN : 0192520229

Download or read book Computational Interaction written by Antti Oulasvirta and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents computational interaction as an approach to explaining and enhancing the interaction between humans and information technology. Computational interaction applies abstraction, automation, and analysis to inform our understanding of the structure of interaction and also to inform the design of the software that drives new and exciting human-computer interfaces. The methods of computational interaction allow, for example, designers to identify user interfaces that are optimal against some objective criteria. They also allow software engineers to build interactive systems that adapt their behaviour to better suit individual capacities and preferences. Embedded in an iterative design process, computational interaction has the potential to complement human strengths and provide methods for generating inspiring and elegant designs. Computational interaction does not exclude the messy and complicated behaviour of humans, rather it embraces it by, for example, using models that are sensitive to uncertainty and that capture subtle variations between individual users. It also promotes the idea that there are many aspects of interaction that can be augmented by algorithms. This book introduces computational interaction design to the reader by exploring a wide range of computational interaction techniques, strategies and methods. It explains how techniques such as optimisation, economic modelling, machine learning, control theory, formal methods, cognitive models and statistical language processing can be used to model interaction and design more expressive, efficient and versatile interaction.

Book Bayesian Methods for Interaction and Design

Download or read book Bayesian Methods for Interaction and Design written by John H. Williamson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-25 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for researchers and practitioners in interaction design, this book shows how Bayesian models can be brought to bear on problems of interface design and user modelling. It introduces and motivates Bayesian modelling and illustrates how powerful these ideas can be in thinking about human-computer interaction, especially in representing and manipulating uncertainty. Bayesian methods are increasingly practical as computational tools to implement them become more widely available, and offer a principled foundation to reason about interaction design. The book opens with a self-contained tutorial on Bayesian concepts and their practical implementation, tailored for the background and needs of interaction designers. The contributed chapters cover the use of Bayesian probabilistic modelling in a diverse set of applications, including improving pointing-based interfaces; efficient text entry using modern language models; advanced interface design using cutting-edge techniques in Bayesian optimisation; and Bayesian approaches to modelling the cognitive processes of users.
