Book The Ugandan Morality Crusade

Download or read book The Ugandan Morality Crusade written by Deborah Kintu and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1999, General Museveni, Uganda's autocratic leader, ordered police to arrest homosexuals for engaging in behavior that he characterized as "un-African" and against Biblical teaching. A state-sanctioned campaign of harassment of LGBT people followed. With the approval of sections of Uganda's clergy (and with the support of U.S. evangelicals) harsh morality laws were passed against pornography and homosexual acts. The former law disproportionately affected urban women, curtailing their freedoms. The latter--known as the "kill the gays bill"--called for life imprisonment or capital punishment for homosexuals. The author weaves together a series of vignettes that trace the development of Uganda's morality laws amidst Machiavellian politics, religious fundamentalism and the human rights struggle of LGBT Ugandans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally a royal court dance, baakisimba asserted the authority of the king as the head of Baganda society. After the abolition of kingship in 1967, baakisimba dance began to be performed in other contexts, with women sometimes playing the accompanying drums-traditionally a man's role-and with men occasionally performing the dance.Sylivia Nannyonga-Tamusuza argues that the music and dance of the Baganda people are not simply reflective of culture; baakisimba participates in the construction of social relations, and helps determine how these relations shape the performing arts. Integrating a study of foregrounds the conceptualization of gender as a time-specific cultural phenomenon. Illuminating the complex relationship between baakisimba and Baganda culture, this path breaking volume bridges the gaps in previous scholarship that integrates music and dance in ethnomusicological scholarship.

Book Colonial Buganda and the End of Empire

Download or read book Colonial Buganda and the End of Empire written by Jonathon L. Earle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonial Buganda was one of the most important and richly documented kingdoms in East Africa. In this book, Jonathon L. Earle offers the first global intellectual history of the Kingdom, using a series of case studies, interviews and previously inaccessible private archives to offer new insights concerning the multiple narratives used by intellectuals. Where previous studies on literacy in Africa have presupposed 'sacred' or 'secular' categories, Earle argues that activists blurred European epistemologies as they reworked colonial knowledge into vernacular debates about kingship and empire. Furthermore, by presenting Catholic, Muslim and Protestant histories and political perspectives in conversation with one another, he offers a nuanced picture of the religious and social environment. Through the lives, politics, and historical contexts of these African intellectuals, Earle presents an important argument about the end of empire, making the reader rethink the dynamics of political imagination and historical pluralism in the colonial and postcolonial state.

Book Kings of Disaster

Download or read book Kings of Disaster written by Simon Simonse and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-awaited, revised, and illustrated edition of Simon Simonse’s study of the Rainmakers of the Nilotic Sudan marks a breakthrough in anthropological thinking on African political systems. Taking his inspiration from René Girard’s theory of consensual scapegoating, the author shows that the longstanding distinction of states and stateless societies as two fundamentally different political types does not hold. Centralized and segmentary systems only differ in the relative emphasis put on the victimary role of the king as compared with that of enemy. Kings of Disaster proposes an elegant and powerful solution to the vexed problem of regicide.
