  • Pages : 371 pages

Download or read book The German Gita written by Bradley L. Herling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the Bhagavadgãtà first become an object of German philosophical and philological inquiry? How were its foundational concepts initially interpreted within German intellectual circles, and what does this episode in the history of cross-cultural encounter teach us about the status of comparative philosophy today? This book addresses these questions through a careful study of the figures who read, translated and interpreted the Bhagavadgãtà around the turn of the nineteenth century in Germany: J.G. Herder, F. Majer, F. Schlegel, A.W. Schlegel, W. von Humboldt, and G.W.F. Hegel. Methodologically, the study attends to the intellectual contexts and prejudices that framed the early reception of the text. But it also delves deeper by investigating the way these frameworks inflected the construction of the Bhagavadgãtà and its foundational concepts through the scholarly acts of excerpting, anthologization, and translation. Overall, the project contributes to the pluralization of Western philosophy and its history while simultaneously arguing for a continued critical alertness in cross-cultural comparison of philosophical and religious worldviews.

Book The Riddle of Malaysian Capitalism

Download or read book The Riddle of Malaysian Capitalism written by Peter Searle and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1998-11-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is capitalism in Southeast Asia 'real' or a 'chimera', that is, some Southeast Asian derivative of capitalism that ultimately will not be sustainable? Malaysia, where an intimate relationship has been forged between the state and business in an effort to create Malay capitalists, presents an interesting and illuminating case in the debate. In this work Peter Searle identifies the complex interaction between the state, the dominant political party (UMNO) and business as the source of dynamism or defeat in the development of Malay capitalists. He also challenges a common view that Chinese business groups are completely different from Malay business groups. Overall this study argues against drawing sharp contrasts between dependency and self-reliance, between state and capital, and between rent-seekers and true 'productive' capitalists. For it is from that amalgam of categories and groups the study concludes that a form of capitalism is emerging in Malaysia which is nonetheless remarkably dynamic and resilient, despite its unorthodox origins.

Internationally applicable, this book presents ideas from a range of cultures, which can be adapted to be implemented in a variety of cultures. The reader is provided with a range of approaches where both the advantages and disadvantages are clearly presented. The ten case studies consider the macro, meso and micro levels of each approach, allowing for an exploration of the growing area of research and practice that is student–staff partnerships, showcasing ways of working with students to enhance engagement and quality, which are vital for a long-term approach. Focussing on one of the main reform topics for universities, Student Engagement and Quality Assurance in Higher Education is essential reading for educational researchers, institutional leaders and all concerned with the implementation and progression of student engagement and quality assurance in higher education.

Book Globalization of an Educational Idea

Download or read book Globalization of an Educational Idea written by Ingrid Miethe and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-07-22 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, authors showcase the worldwide spread of Workers’ Faculties as an example of both cooperation between socialist countries in education, and globalization processes in the field of education. Based on extensive research carried out in Cuban, German, Mozambican, and Vietnamese archives as well as expert interviews, it combines detailed case studies of educational transfers and policy implementation with a discussion of theoretical approaches to the study of globalization in and of education. Research on Workers’ Faculties provides an especially interesting example for the study of educational transfer between socialist countries as well as for the interplay of such transfers with processes of globalisation for two reasons. On one hand, the first Workers’ Faculties were established already shortly after the October Revolution in Russia, and Workers’ Faculties continue to exist in Cuba until today. A study of these institutions therefore provides a dynamic perspective covering the whole period of the existence of the socialist camp. On the other hand, the spread of the Workers’ Faculty idea to four continents allows for an analysis that takes into account widely differing local contexts. This book offers an analysis of general trends and particularities in the history of the global spread of the Workers’ Faculty idea and its implementation in local contexts. Finally, it discusses the results with a view towards theories of globalization in the field of education as well as of specificities of processes of “socialist globalization”.

Book Education and Development in Colonial and Postcolonial Africa

Download or read book Education and Development in Colonial and Postcolonial Africa written by Damiano Matasci and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access edited volume offers an analysis of the entangled histories of education and development in twentieth-century Africa. It deals with the plurality of actors that competed and collaborated to formulate educational and developmental paradigms and projects: debating their utility and purpose, pondering their necessity and risk, and evaluating their intended and unintended consequences in colonial and postcolonial moments. Since the late nineteenth century, the “educability” of the native was the subject of several debates and experiments: numerous voices, arguments, and agendas emerged, involving multiple institutions and experts, governmental and non-governmental, religious and laic, operating from the corridors of international organizations to the towns and rural villages of Africa. This plurality of expressions of political, social, cultural, and economic imagination of education and development is at the core of this collective work.

Book 4D Visualization of Matter

Download or read book 4D Visualization of Matter written by Ahmed H Zewail and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-09-12 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the beginning of mankind's efforts to pursue scientific inquiry into the laws of nature, visualization of the very distant and the very small has been paramount. The examples are numerous. A century ago, the atom appeared mysterious, a “raisin or plum pie of no structure,” until it was visualized on the appropriate length and time scales. Similarly, with telescopic observations, a central dogma of the cosmos was changed and complexity yielded to simplicity of the heliocentric structure and motion in our solar system. For matter, in over a century of developments, major advances have been made to explore the inner microscopic structures and dynamics. These advances have benefited many fields of endeavor, but visualization was incomplete; it was limited either to the 3D spatial structure or to the 1D temporal evolution. However, in systems with myriads of atoms, 4D spatiotemporal visualization is essential for dissecting their complexity. The biological world is rich with examples, and many molecular diseases cannot be fully understood without such direct visualization, as, for example, in the case of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The same is true for phenomena in materials science, chemistry, and nanoscience. This anthology is an account of the collected works that have emerged over the past decade from Caltech. Through recent publications, the volume provides overviews of the principles, the electron-based techniques, and the applications made. Thanks to advances in imaging principles and technology, it is now possible with 4D electron microscopy to reach ten orders of magnitude improvement in time resolution while simultaneously conserving the atomic spatial resolution in visualization. This is certainly a long way from Robert Hooke's microscopy, which was recorded in his 1665 masterpiece Micrographia.

Download or read book Mission Continues written by Claudia Wahrisch-Oblau and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 2009, thirty-five theologians from Asia, Africa, and Europe met in Wuppertal, Germany, for a consultation on mission theology organized by the United Evangelical Mission: Communion of Thirty-five Churches in Three Continents. The aim was to participate in the 100th anniversary of the Edinburgh conference through a study process and reflect on the challenges for mission in the twenty-first century. We decided not to invite renowned experts, but to have an open invitation through a call for papers, so that practicing mission experts not yet well known would have an opportunity to share their expertise. We decided not to predetermine a theme or motto for the consultation but to allow various themes on mission to emerge from the papers themselves and thus to allow wide-ranging discussions. Indeed the papers were varied; each drew strong reactions, lively and even controversial debates. We were able to discover common concerns transcending very different contexts. The collection of papers in this book has been taken from the papers delivered at the Wuppertal consultation. In some cases, short responses by one or two of the consultation participants were added to highlight the discussions that followed. The very varied voices collected in this anthology nevertheless have much in common: Even where they are most theoretical it is obvious that all contributors come from missionary practice and bring in their contextual experiences.

Book Ethnicity and Fertility in Southeast Asia

Download or read book Ethnicity and Fertility in Southeast Asia written by Aline K. Wong and published by Institute of Southeast Asian. This book was released on 1985 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of six titles resulting from the Ethnicity and Fertility in Southeast Asia Project that commenced in 1980. Building upon the results of an earlier study, which established that ethnicity was a significant factor underlying the fertility differentials among the various ethnic groups in Southeast Asia, the project aimed to explore in greater detail the extent to which ethnicity and ethnic factors such as ethnic attitudes, ethnic identification and cultural practices influenced reproductive behaviour. Instead of utilizing secondary sources, the project relied on primary data collected through the survey technique. In all, twenty ethnic groups from the five ASEAN countries were surveyed in this study which spanned a period of three years.

Book Introduction to Understandable Physics

Download or read book Introduction to Understandable Physics written by Will Winn and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will Winn has written Introduction to Understandable Physics with the goal of presenting physics in a building-block fashion. Accordingly, Volume III. Electricity, Magnetism and Light requires a knowledge of Volume I. Mechanics and Volume II. Matter, Heat and Waves. Volume III begins with a study of electric charges, their electric fields/forces, and subsequently their motion as electric currents. These currents are shown to produce magnetic fields/forces, where electromagnets are studied as models for understanding permanent magnets. Next, The reverse process where magnetic fields produce current is examined and applied for generating electricity. AC and DC circuits exemplify further applications. Finally, electric and magnetic fields are found to produce electromagnetic waves that move at the speed of light. The study of light begins with historical measurements of its speed and then examines its electromagnetic power intensity, light spectra, human response and color perception. Next, light reflection and refraction are applied to mirrors, lenses, rainbows, eyeglasses, telescopes and microscopes. Subsequently, The text examines the wave nature of light, As exhibited by its diffraction and interference phenomena. Furthermore, when the electric field amplitudes of waves are oriented along one dimension, light is polarized. Polaroids filter out such "glaring" light when used in sunglasses. Finally, various light experiments provided early clues for discovering relativity and quantum mechanics, which are examined in Volume IV. Near the end of each chapter a Simple Projects section suggests experiments and/or field trips that can reinforce the physics covered. Some experiments are simple enough for students to explore alone, while others benefit from equipment available to physics instructors. Also optional text sections provide students with a deeper appreciation of the subject matter; however these are not required for continuity. Some of these optional topics can be candidates for term projects.

Book 4D Electron Microscopy

  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 1848164009
  • Pages : 359 pages

Download or read book 4D Electron Microscopy written by Ahmed H. Zewail and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural phase transitions, mechanical deformations, and the embryonic stages of melting and crystallization are examples of phenomena that can now be imaged in unprecedented structural detail with high spatial resolution, and ten orders of magnitude as fast as hitherto. No monograph in existence attempts to cover the revolutionary dimensions that EM in its various modes of operation nowadays makes possible. The authors of this book chart these developments, and also compare the merits of coherent electron waves with those of synchrotron radiation. They judge it prudent to recall some important basic procedural and theoretical aspects of imaging and diffraction so that the reader may better comprehend the significance of the new vistas and applications now afoot. This book is not a vade mecum - numerous other texts are available for the practitioner for that purpose.
