Book Serial Verbs in White Hmong

Download or read book Serial Verbs in White Hmong written by Nerida Jarkey and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Serial Verbs in White Hmong Nerida Jarkey investigates verb serialization, a highly productive grammatical strategy in this dynamic Southeast Asian language in which multiple verbs are simply concatenated within a single clause to depict a single event. The investigation identifies four major types of serial verb construction (SVC) in White Hmong and finds that the key function of all these types is to depict a single event in an elaborate and vivid way, a much-favoured method of description in this language. These findings concerning the nature and function of SVCs in White Hmong contribute to broader discussions on the nature of events as both cognitive and cultural constructs.

Book Serial Verbs

Download or read book Serial Verbs written by Alexandra Y. Aikhenvald and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth typological account of the forms, functions, and histories of serial verb constructions. Serial verbs, in which several verbs combine to form a single predicate, describe what is conceptualized as a single event. The verbs in the construction have the same tense, aspect, mood, modality, and evidentiality values, cannot be negated or questioned separately, and usually share the same subject and object. They are a powerful means of portraying various facets of one event, and can express grammatical meanings such as aspect, direction, and causation, particularly in languages where few other means are available. In this volume, Alexandra Aikhenvald seeks to answer unresolved questions such as: What are the parameters of variation in serial verbs? How do serial verbs differ from other, superficially similar multi-verb constructions? How do serial verbs emerge, and what happens to them over time? What role do they play in the representation of event structure? The book uses an inductively-based framework for the analysis and draws on data from languages with different typological profiles and genetic affiliations. It will be of interest to researchers and students from a wide range of fields of linguistics, especially typology, anthropological linguistics, and language contact.

Book Mong Education at the Crossroads

Download or read book Mong Education at the Crossroads written by Paoze Thao and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mong Education at the Crossroads analyzes the educational situation of Mong-Americans, members of an ethnic tribe that migrated from China to Laos in the eighteenth century and assisted the French and Americans in that area during the twentieth century. The Mong population in the United States is expected to reach 330,000 by 2000, raising concerns for educators in California, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Georgia, and Michigan; where large numbers of Mong reside. Paoze Thao provides a thorough history of this group of people, enabling educators to understand the major trends that shaped Mong society, so that they can deal with the cultural and educational adjustment as students acclimate to the United States. Since their resettlement in the United States, the Mong have suffered from tremendous frustration, caused by their illiteracy, lack of formal education, and the language barrier that impeded their ability to contribute to society. Thao makes suggestions for addressing the cultural and educational issues facing the Mong, directed toward each of the parties involved in the education process. In addition to providing ideas for improving the education of the Mong, Thao's examination provides a definitive study of their cultural adjustment in the United States.

Book Complex Predicates

Download or read book Complex Predicates written by Mengistu Amberber and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-22 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complex predicates are multipredicational, but monoclausal structures. They have proven problematic for linguistic theory, particularly for proposed distinctions between the lexicon, morphology, and syntax. This volume focuses on the mapping from morphosyntactic structures to event structure, and in particular the constraints on possible mappings. The volume showcases the 'coverb construction', a complex predicate construction which, though widespread, has received little attention in the literature. The coverb construction contrasts with more familiar serial verb constructions. The coverb construction generally maps only to event structures like those of monomorphemic verbs, whereas serial verb constructions map to a range of event structures differing from those of monomorphemic verbs. The volume coverage is truly cross-linguistic, including languages from Australia, Papua New Guinea, Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, East Africa and North America. The volume establishes a new arena of research in event structure, syntax, and cross-linguistic typology.

Book Loanwords in the World s Languages

Download or read book Loanwords in the World s Languages written by Martin Haspelmath and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-12-22 with total page 1104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first work to address the question of what kinds of words get borrowed in a systematic and comparative perspective. It studies lexical borrowing behavior on the basis of a world-wide sample of 40 languages, both major languages and minor languages, and both languages with heavy borrowing and languages with little lexical influence from other languages. The book is the result of a five-year project bringing together a unique group of specialists of many different languages and areas. The introductory chapters provide a general up-to-date introduction to language contact at the word level, as well as a presentation of the project's methodology. All the chapters are based on samples of 1000-2000 words, elicited by a uniform meaning list of 1460 meanings. The combined database, comprising over 70,000 words, is published online at the same time as the book is published. For each word, information about loanword status is given in the database, and the 40 case studies in the book describe the social and historical contact situations in detail. The final chapter draws general conclusions about what kinds of words tend to get borrowed, what kinds of word meanings are particularly resistant to borrowing, and what kinds of social contact situations lead to what kinds of borrowing situations.
