Book excerpt: This book presents the fundamentals of wireless communications and services, explaining in detail what RF spectrum management is, why it is important, which are the authorities regulating the use of spectrum, and how is it managed and enforced at the international, regional and national levels. The book offers insights to the engineering, regulatory, economic, legal, management policy-making aspects involved. Real-world case studies are presented to depict the various approaches in different countries, and valuable lessons are drawn. The topics are addressed by engineers, advocates and economists employed by national and international spectrum regulators. The book is a tool that will allow the international regional and national regulators to better manage the RF spectrum, and will help operators and suppliers of wireless communications to better understand their regulators.

Book excerpt: Congressional hearing on how radio spectrum can be managed to achieve sound communications policy. This is the first hearing before the Committee's Subcommittee on Telecommunications, Trade, & Consumer Protection with the head of the NTIA & the Chairman of the FCC. The Clinton Administration proposed additional spectrum auctions in its fiscal year 1998 budget. The FCC scheduled a number of auctions for later in 1997, one of them ordered by the agreement on the last budget. The FCC & the NTIA still have a role in managing the spectrum in the public interest, which must mean more than simply financial profit for the government.

Book Summary of a Forum on Spectrum Management Policy Reform

Download or read book Summary of a Forum on Spectrum Management Policy Reform written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-06-17 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2003, the Department of Commerce's Spectrum Policy Initiative was established with the objective of promoting a more efficient and beneficial use of the spectrum. As part of that Initiative, a series of public forums about spectrum management policy was held. The Computer Science and Telecommunications Board was asked to organize one of these forums, a public forum to gather the views of a variety of government and private sector stakeholders about the impact of spectrum policy on their activities. This report presents a summary of those views. Among those included are those representing national defense, homeland security, aviation, science, public safety, amateur radio, cellular voice and data, and terrestrial broadcast uses of the spectrum. Although prepared by the NRC, the report does not present NRC findings or recommendations. A broader study of spectrum policy, including findings and recommendations, will be issued in early 2005.

Book A Strategy for Active Remote Sensing Amid Increased Demand for Radio Spectrum

Download or read book A Strategy for Active Remote Sensing Amid Increased Demand for Radio Spectrum written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-09-21 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Active remote sensing is the principal tool used to study and to predict short- and long-term changes in the environment of Earth - the atmosphere, the oceans and the land surfaces - as well as the near space environment of Earth. All of these measurements are essential to understanding terrestrial weather, climate change, space weather hazards, and threats from asteroids. Active remote sensing measurements are of inestimable benefit to society, as we pursue the development of a technological civilization that is economically viable, and seek to maintain the quality of our life. A Strategy for Active Remote Sensing Amid Increased Demand for Spectrum describes the threats, both current and future, to the effective use of the electromagnetic spectrum required for active remote sensing. This report offers specific recommendations for protecting and making effective use of the spectrum required for active remote sensing.
