Book excerpt: Baked Beans (Life Aboard USS Boston CA-69) is a three volume follow-up to A Bird's Eye View - the story of the heavy cruiser USS Boston and her exploits during WWll in the many battles against the Empire of Japan. Volume II relates the events from Sept 1, 1944 through the end of March 1945 when the ship returned to San Pedro, CA for repairs. During this half-year, the Boston participated in the Philippines Campaigns and Iwo Jima. The incredible story of the crippling of two US cruisers by enemy torpedo bombers off the coast of Formosa (Taiwan) and the subsequent retreat (with Boston towing torpedoed cruiser Houston) comes alive in these pages. First hand accounts of the savage Typhoon Cobra that hit the fleet in late December will amaze you! The details of the Iwo Jima landings give us a peek at the other side of the Iwo story - the role of the support ships.

Book excerpt: Baked Beans is a follow-up to A Bird's Eye View, the story of the heavy cruiser USS Boston, and her exploits during WWll in the many battles against the Empire of Japan. After publication, Steve and brother Bill set-up a website dedicated the the Boston and it's crew from the ship's christening to it's final trip to the mothball fleet in Bemerton, WA, in January 1946. The website touched a nerve with friends and relatives of the crew. Sons and daughters and nieces and nephews began contacting the Kellys, wanting to share pictures, stories, memorabilia, documents and other treasures. That is the story of the beginning of Baked Beans. Not only does it contain first hand accounts - two sailor's diaries and notes; it also contains actual brochures and newsletters and certificates from the War. It is full of original photographs from the Boston (CA-69) collection at the National Archives in Wsshington, DC. If that's not enough, Steve has included interviews with four members of the original crew - 3 enlisted men and one officer - who share their memories of the mundane, "day-to-day life aboard the ship" stories, and anecdotes of milestone events and major battles. There really is something for everyone in these pages! Note - this is Volume 1 - covering the first part of the War, including the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Volume 2 is already in the works. There will be a Volume 3 as well . . .

Book excerpt: Baked Beans (Life Aboard USS Boston CA-69) is a three volume follow-up to A Bird's Eye View - the story of the heavy cruiser USS Boston and her exploits during WWll in the many battles against the Empire of Japan.Volume III relates the events from April 1, 1945 through the end of January 1946 when the ship returned to San Francisco, CA. During this period, the Boston participated in the final engagements against Japan, and the lead-up to the Surrender. The Surrender (Sept. 2, 1945) did not represent the end of the story for the ship and her crew. The men were assigned post-War demilitarization (Occupation Duty) duties, spending an extra six months off the shores of Japan.Readers of this book will read, for the first time ever in print, Marine Major Norman C. Bayley's exploits on the ground hours after the Atomic Bombs went off over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Mr. Bayley was the commander of the ship's Marine Detachment. He was asked to gather intelligence on the ground after the bombs went off - the first American in. In Norm's own words, he tells of his "forage" into enemy territory - bristling with soldiers and thousands of wounded civilians. Readers will also see diary entries, first hand accounts from men who were there, official documents and declassified photos from the National Archives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S.S. Boston in World War II, Baked Beans Vol. 1, is a major revision to "Baked Beans Vol. 1," which was a follow-up to A Bird's Eye View, the story of the heavy cruiser USS Boston, and her exploits during WWll. Only primary-source historical materials (documents, photos, diaries, and first-hand accounts) are used in these books, with occasional overview statements from the author lightly sprinkled throughout. Source materials include the ship's and Task Force Action Reports, War Diaries, Decklogs and official Navy Photos from the Boston folders at the National Archives. Additionally, sailor's notes, documents, diaries and anecdotes flesh out the story from their points of view. The author interviewed six surviving Original Crewmembers and one Officer; their stories putting on the finishing touches. The Baked Beans Series chronicles the heavy cruiser CA-69 Boston from her christening in the Fore River (Quincy, MA) Shipyard in August 1942 until she leaves Japanese waters for the last time in January 1946. The incredible story is told through the eyes of her mostly 19 year-old enlisted men's point of view. The story of the Boston IS the story of Task Force 58 and vice-versa. Volume 1 - covers the first part of the Central Pacific War, including the capture of the Marshall Islands, Battle of the Philippine Sea ("Great Marianas Turkey Shoot"), and the securing of the Mariana Islands.

Book Volume I U S Navy U S Marine Corps and U S Coast Guard Aircraft Lost During World War II Listed by Ship Attached

Download or read book Volume I U S Navy U S Marine Corps and U S Coast Guard Aircraft Lost During World War II Listed by Ship Attached written by and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-07-25 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, the U.S. military lost some 35,000 aircraft to enemy action, training incidents, typhoons, aircraft carrier deck mishaps, mechanical failures or just normal wear-and-tear where aircraft were scrapped and used for parts to keep others flying. Many just failed to return from their missions. To date, the 15,069 aircraft represented in this 3-volume set is information initially transferred from hand-written "Aircraft History Cards" and are the total number of U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard aircraft lost between 7 December 1941 and 15 August 1945, and lost outside the continental United States (CONUS). Volume I represents the information on any aircraft lost that was attached to the 197 different ships in the database. Given the thousands of hours that went into this effort, the author hopes that, as a 3-volume set of reference books, it provides assistance to others who are researching ship, squadron and aircraft histories.
