Book The United States Refugee Admissions Program

Download or read book The United States Refugee Admissions Program written by David A. Martin and published by Migration Policy Institute and the Bertelsmann Foundation. This book was released on 2005 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past four years, the United States has resettled far fewer refugees than it did in the 1990s. The decline has stemmed partly from post-9/11 security measures. But this book explains other, deeper reasons, deriving from changes in how and why refugees move, how asylum states receive them, and the world community's response. It alsosuggests steps to restore the program and better address real refugee needs."At a time when America's noble heritage and history as a beacon of hope for the world's downtrodden is under siege... David Martin is a powerful voice of reason the nation needs to hear."& —Senator Edward M. Kennedy"Must reading for policymakers, journalists, academics, and everyone who cares about America's efforts on behalf of the world's most vulnerable people. I strongly recommend it."& —George Rupp, president, International Rescue Committee

Book Bosnian Refugees in America

Download or read book Bosnian Refugees in America written by Reed Coughlan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-08-02 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April of 1992, war began in Bosnia. Sarajevo, site of the 1984 Winter Olympics, and, we were told, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, became a city under siege. For all of the people of Bosnia, life shifted in unimaginable ways in a matter of hours, days, or weeks. An immediate exodus began from Bosnia, and people who had never anticipated leaving their country became refugees, dependent upon a world system of resettlement for displaced persons. This book relates the experiences of a hundred Bosnian families who came to Utica, a town in upstate New York. Bosnians in Utica came here as refugees - ginning in 1993, having ?ed from the wars of succession in the former Yugoslavia. Our study evolved over several years as a result of our interests in the war in Bosnia and the massive ?ow of refugees that it precipitated. We began work on the project in the late 1990s as we set out to learn about the war and to explore refugee experiences of displacement, transit, and resettlement. Our intent is to portray the experience of Bosnian refugees in one American city and to capture, in their words, in as much detail as possible their adjustment to a new community and a new culture.

Book excerpt: Kathleen Newland argues that the United States must abandon the Cold War underpinnings of its refugee policies and programs in favor of policies that strive to minimize the need for protection--through a policy of prevention and repatriation. To meet its international obligation to help protect the world's refugees, the United States must restructure its refugee program along more robust lines, focusing on the refugee's need for protection and access to asylum.
