The propaganda campaign needed to justify this new foreign policy departure was, therefore, particularly important. This volume focuses on the efforts of the Australian and New Zealand Governments to 'sell' the deeply divisive Vietnam War, and their combat involvement in it, to their respective populations. It examines the propaganda campaigns conducted, and assesses the reasons for the successes and failures of those campaigns. It also evaluates the official rhetoric on the war, comparing this to both the private views held by government officials, and the type and amount of information that these officials received from their own sources and those of the U.S. administrations and UK governments. The responsibility, Brydon stresses, is on the media and on academics to view future war narratives through a critical lens, in order to best inform the American people. The bibliography is selected from the holdings on that war housed in the McDermott library, United States Air Force Academy, and includes books, journal articles, government publications, and technical reports. Newspaper articles, works of fiction, collections of poetry, and most personal narratives are not included. The Clark Special Collections Branch of the library has extensive primary source materials and artifacts focused on American POW experiences in Southeast Asia. Those items are also excluded from this bibliography since they are limited to in-house use only. It offers civilian officials and military commanders the means to blur the distinction between information and persuasion in order to achieve immediate and demonstrable results. The use of such tactics by the Joint U.S. Public Affairs Office in Vietnam destroyed trust in the information given even at official press conferences.
