Book excerpt: The Naval Air Development Center has been conducting a development program to explore the On-Board Oxygen Generation (OBOG) concept for application aboard tactical naval aircraft. The objective of the program is to eliminate hazardous and logistically burdensome LOX (liquid oxygen) installations on ships, as well as forward basing areas, by generation of oxygen on board the aircraft. The purpose of this paper is to report on progress to date in the program which includes: (1) Major reduction in values of weight and resource requirements to acceptable levels, (2) Development of hardware prototypes of the proposed systems suitable for flight test, (3) Aircraft/OBOG systems integration studies, (4) Laboratory T and E of the prototype systems, (5) Physiological assessment(man rating) of the prototype systems, (6) Flight testing to date.

Book excerpt: The Navy/Air Force Oxygen Generating System (NAOGS) program is a joint effort between the Air Force and the Naval Air Development Center to develop a 2-man onboard oxygen generator for tactical aircraft. One of the proposed systems is based upon reversible sorption of oxygen from aircraft engine bleed air using fluomine, a cobalt chelate. The NAOGS fluomine system was manufactured by Garrett/AiResearch Division, Torrance, California. The USAF School of Aerospace Medicine performed man-rating of the NAOGS-fluomine unit prior to flight test by the U.S. Navy. The experimental protocol at USAFSAM consisted of both unmanned and manned testing, during which the product oxygen was monitored for quantity, purity, and trace contaminant content. Man-rating consisted of actual flight simulations with 2 test subjects at four different altitudes for periods up to 2 hours while breathing the product oxygen. The NAOGS, for the most part, performed adequately during both manned and unmanned testing. The exceptions were a lower than specification oxygen production rate and a short-term drop in oxygen purity during each bed switching cycle. These shortcomings are discussed in the context of the forthcoming flight test program. (Author).

Book excerpt: The molecular sieve method of generating an enriched-oxygen breathing gas is one of three candidate on-board oxygen generation (OBOG) systems under joint Navy-Air Force development for application in tactical aircraft. As part of this program, the performance of a nominal 2-man-capacity molecular sieve oxygen generation system (MSOG) was characterized under simulated flight conditions. Data were given on the composition (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and argon) of the MSOG-generated breathing gas as a function of inlet air pressure, altitude, and gas flow rate. The maximum oxygen concentration observed was 95% with the balance argon. Under certain conditions of pressure, altitude, and flow, the argon enrichment factor exceeded that of oxygen giving a maximum argon concentration of 6.4% with the balance oxygen. The performance of the MSOG was discussed in the context of aircraft operating envelopes using both diluter-demand and 100% delivery subsystems.

Book excerpt: Most Navy surface vessels are equipped with cryogenic (LOX and LN) storage-evaporator gas supply systems to produce oxygen and nitrogen for life support, flight service, and other system applications. Increased mobility and independence of land-base logistic support requires new, on-board O2 and N2 generation systems, to be installed on existing and future Navy ships. This study summarizes existing industrial candidate systems, and overviews some new processes under development. Analysis was conducted on gaseous oxygen and nitrogen generation systems of the most likely candidates, and particular attention was focused on molecular sieve gas separators. Next, the report concentrates on engineering design guidelines for constructions of on-board gas generators of confined scales. Safety, maintenance, and standard (industrial and MIL) requirements are summarized to help construct, test, and evaluate a scaled prototype on-board O2/N2 generation system. The study identified two types of presently available industrial gas generation systems suitable for confined on-board applications. However, significant modifications and development are necessary to meet filtration, protection and stress-prevention requirements.

It was from James and Mary Baird, a couple whose decision to stand against the racial prejudices inherent in their small town culture in Baird Mississippi in the 1950s forced them to leave family, clan and culture to reach out to the hurting and the needy in southeast Asia that he learned to heed God?s call in his life and to pursue his vocation with a new sense of adventure and purpose. In so doing he had to come to grips with his work as a scientist engaged in the development of weapon systems and was eventually led to challenge his company?s involvement with nerve gas research and resign his position. With each step in his vocational journey the healing went deeper and finally, after staying the course for more than twenty years, the author was gifted with a revelation of his family pathology which provided the clues concerning his own responses to life. This is a story that the author was compelled to tell because the telling was an integral part of his healing journey and because, as he states in the introduction ?I believe that what I have experienced and learned is not just for my own healing and spiritual growth, that perhaps it may help others walk their own path to wholeness. If this should prove to be the case for only one other person it (the telling) will have been worth the effort.?
