Opportunities abound for the USGS to strategically pursue international science in the next 5-10 years that bears on growing worldwide problems having direct impact on the United States-climate and ecosystem changes, natural disasters, the spread of invasive species, and diminishing natural resources, to name a few. Taking a more coherent, proactive agency approach to international science-and building support for international projects currently in progress-would help the USGS participate in international science activities more effectively.

Book excerpt: The U.S. government estimates Afghanistan has more than $1 trillion in reserves of minerals, oil, and natural gas that could generate more than $2 billion in annual revenues for the Afghan government. Since 2009, the Department of Defense's temporary Task Force for Business and Stability Operations (TFBSO) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) have obligated nearly $488 million on efforts designed to develop the extractive industries in Afghanistan. The objectives of this audit were to (1) assess TFBSO efforts to develop the extractive industries in Afghanistan, (2) assess USAID efforts to develop the extractive industries in Afghanistan, and (3) identify the challenges to creating stable and lasting extractive industries as a source of revenue for the Afghan government.
