Download or read book Boundary Layer and Flow Control written by G. V. Lachmann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boundary Layer and Flow Control: Its Principles and Application, Volume 2 focuses on the layer of fluid in the immediate area of a bounding surface where the effects of viscosity are substantial. This book is organized into two main topics—boundary layer control for low drag, and shock-induced separation and its prevention by design and boundary layer control. It specifically discusses the nature of transition, effect of two-dimensional and isolated roughness on laminar flow, and progress in the design of low drag aerofoils. The onset of separation effects for aerofoils and wings, shock-induced separation for laminar boundary layers, and shock-induced separation for laminar boundary layers are also deliberated. This volume is recommended to physicists and specialists interested in boundary layer and flow control.

This book was released on 1957 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tables are presented containing 69,000 values of a set of characteristic functions which first arose in problems of supersonic wing-body interference. The tables are useful in problems of supersonic flow involving aerodynamic shapes which are wholly or in part quasi-cylinders of nearly circular cross section. A number of uses are described in the aerodynamics of bodies alone, body-body or shock-body interference, wing-body interference, the vortex-panel interference. Three illustrative examples are worked out in detail. First, the pressure field due to fuselage indentation is calculated and presented in a form independent of Mach number. Secondly, the tables are applied to a problem involving a previously unpublished solution to the Navier-Stokes equations; namely, the boundary-layer profiles of a circular cylinder moved impulsively with a constant axial force in a viscous incompressible fluid. In the final example, the wave drag of corrugated circular cylinders is calculated as a function of the number of corrugations and their wave length. Several nonaerodynamic applications are pointed out in the fields of acoustics and heat conduction. Generally speaking, the tables are applicable to boundary-value problems of the second kind involving the wave equation in three dimensions with approximately circular cylindrical boundaries or involving the unsteady heat-conduction equation in two space dimensions with nearly circular boundaries.

Book excerpt: The aerodynamic load characteristics of a wing-body combination were determined experimentally at Mach numbers from 0.80 to 1.03 for angles of attack up to 26 degrees. Two wings, both with 30 degrees sweep of the quarter-chord line, taper ratio of 0.2, aspect ratio of 3, and thickness of 4 percent chord, but of different types of construction, were tested. One wing was of solid steel and the other was of plastic with an inner steel core ...
Download or read book Progress in Aeronautical Sciences written by D. Küchemann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Aeronautical Sciences, Volume 9 presents the vibrational characteristics of certain aircraft. This book supplements the comprehensive account of matrix methods of structural analysis. Organized into five chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the different schemes of the numerical method of characteristics for calculating three-dimensional steady supersonic gas flow about bodies moving at incidence. This text then examines the flow of a perfect gas and provides the generalization for the case of equilibrium and non-equilibrium flow of real gas. Other chapters consider the various aspects of the aerodynamic design of aircraft and discuss the application of modern computer methods to fluid mechanics. This book discusses as well the prospects for further development of the existing types and for the establishment of the as yet hypothetical types of aircraft. The final chapter shows how the evolution of the aerodynamic shape leads to a complete spectrum of major types of aircraft. This book is a valuable resource for engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Aeronautical Sciences, Volume 3 contains the proceedings of the Second International Congress in the Aeronautical Sciences held in Zurich, Switzerland, on September 12-16, 1960. The papers explore advances in aeronautical sciences and cover topics ranging from the role of entropy in the aerospace sciences to the theory of hypersonic flow over blunt-nosed slender bodies. The effect of boundary layer transition at the leading edge of thin wings on general nose separation is also discussed, along with the aerodynamics of aircraft shapes for flight at supersonic speeds. This book is comprised of 28 chapters and begins with a review of the importance of entropy in the aerospace sciences, citing the work of Nicolaus Sadi Carnot and Rudolf Clausius as well as enthalpy and free enthalpy. The link between entropy and molecular theory is also described before turning to the physics of jet streams and the aerodynamics of jet flaps. Other chapters consider a wide range of problems both of theoretical and practical importance, including the flow around a circular cylinder; the theory of boundary layer; the physics of transition from laminar to turbulent flow; and the theory and experimental knowledge of transonic, supersonic, and hypersonic flows. Due attention is given to the re-entry of missiles and space vehicles into the atmosphere; problems of trajectories; guidance of space vehicles; and power generation in space. The economic and technical aspects of air transportation are also highlighted. This volume will be of interest to scientists and engineers in aeronautics and astronautics.
