Book Type XXI U Boat Electroboot The Story of the World s First True Submarine Capable of Operating Primarily Submerged

Download or read book Type XXI U Boat Electroboot The Story of the World s First True Submarine Capable of Operating Primarily Submerged written by Nitin Wasant Shirsekar and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-04-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BOOK: PART ONE The book describes the development of the High Test Peroxide [HTP], H2O2 engine envisaged by Hellmuth Walter, as an Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system to replace conventional lead acid batteries in existing Unterseeboote. The pre-war design of the Type VII and Type IX Unterseeboote were by now obsolete and the boats were being severely mauled as they tried to penetrate the formidable allied anti-submarine screens. Dönitz wagered on the 1,600-ton Type XVIII to tilt the balance in favor of Germany, by mating the 'High Test Peroxide' [HTP] propulsion system to its streamlined 'wind tunnel' tested hull, that could theoretically triple underwater speed and endurance. He invested considerable time and resources in this effort, despite facing severe resource constraints and rebuffs by his malicious superiors, who sought to discredit him at every juncture, in his quest. Part One of the book, describes these events up to the middle of 1943 - starting with the development of the [HTP] Walter propulsion system - the development of the 'Versuchs' V-80 design that housed the revolutionary system - the initial successful trails of the V-80 as also the bigger 'Versuchs' V-300 design. A new 1,600-ton Type XVIII Unterseeboote ocean going design was therefore readied to house the new propulsion system in a combat environment. The [HTP] Walter propulsion system however still remained hopelessly bug ridden. Time was running out for Germany, and the BdU engineers proposed installation of additional lead acid batteries, in the lower hull section of the Type XVIII coupled to a pair of heavy duty, silent running motors to achieve the 'magical quotient' of tripling existing underwater endurance and speed. The idea appealed to Dönitz who approved the design changes and was thus born the 1,600 ton, Type XXI (Elektroboot)! The new Type XXI Elektroboot could theoretically, move swiftly and silently underwater without easy detection and strike decisive blows, without the need to surface rapidly for recharging its lead acid batteries. The Type XXI had the potential to once again transform Dönitz's Unterseebootwaffe, into a feared force and had it been brought into quantitative and qualitative production earlier, could have turned around the undersea war, to the detriment of the Allied forces everywhere!

Book excerpt: The submarine was one of the most revolutionary weapons of World War I, inciting both terror and fascination for militaries and civilians alike. During the war, after U-boats sank the Lusitania and began daring attacks on shipping vessels off the East Coast, the American press dubbed these weapons “Hun Devil Boats,” “Sea Thugs,” and “Baby Killers.” But at the conflict’s conclusion, the U.S. Navy acquired six U-boats to study and to serve as war souvenirs. Until their destruction under armistice terms in 1921, these six U-boats served as U.S. Navy ships, manned by American crews. The ships visited eighty American cities to promote the sale of victory bonds and to recruit sailors, allowing hundreds of thousands of Americans to see up close the weapon that had so captured the public’s imagination. In America’s U-Boats Chris Dubbs examines the legacy of submarine warfare in the American imagination. Combining nautical adventure, military history, and underwater archaeology, Dubbs shares the previously untold story of German submarines and their impact on American culture and reveals their legacy and Americans’ attitudes toward this new wonder weapon.

Book excerpt: Is it science fiction? No! This is the true story of the invention of the world's first submersible aircraft. Developed during the Cold War era, the military potential of such a craft was invaluable, and the inventor worked tirelessly to get his flying submarine off the drawing board and into the water. Donald V. Reid, the inventor, was a high-energy person of many interests and talents, as well as a technical genius. This story is told by his son, who helped his father assemble the craft in their Asbury Park, New Jersey back yard, and who was the pilot of the Reid Flying Submarine. Photos and drawings illustrate how the sub was made, and show it being tested in the water and in flight. Don Reid gained minor celebrity status for his novel idea and appeared on the popular television programs, I've Got A Secret, To Tell The Truth, and The Johnny Carson Show. He was an aviation pioneer who was never fully recognized for his innovative contributions. Read this engaging story of invention and experimentation, and find out what ultimately became of the extraordinary Reid Flying Submarine!

Book excerpt: “Describ[es] the Type VII and its place in the history of warfare . . . probably the finest book on German submarines of WWII available in print.”—Firetrench First conceived in the mid–1930s, the Type VII was still in production in the closing stages of the Second World War a decade later. Subject to continuous improvement through six major variants and with around 650 completed, it was built in larger numbers than any other submarine design in history. It formed the backbone of the Kriegsmarine’s campaign against merchant shipping for the whole of the war, and in terms of tonnage sunk was by far the most successful U-boat type. This encyclopedic work combines a technical description of the type in all its variations with a history of its development and an overview of its most significant operations—especially those convoy battles that were to have a crucial impact on the evolution of the design and its equipment. A particular attraction of the book is the comprehensive visual coverage—photographs of virtually every aspect of design, construction, fittings and shipboard life; highly detailed general arrangement plans and close-up scale drawings; and, with modelmakers in mind, a stunning collection of full-color three-dimensional illustrations of every external feature and variant of the boats. There have been many books on U-boats reflecting an enduring public interest so any new offering has to be special. With its unique concentration of information and illustrative reference, Type VII is unrivalled. “A comprehensive history of the Kriegsmarine’s most potent weapon . . . includes detailed modelmakers’ plans together with over 320 photographs.”—Maritime Advisor

Book excerpt: The ‘X’ stood for experimental, but it might equally have meant extraordinary, exotic or extravagant, as this giant submarine attracted superlatives – the world’s largest, most heavily armed, and deepest diving submersible of the day. X.1 was a controversial project conceived behind the backs of the politicians, and would remain an unwanted stepchild. As British diplomats at the Washington naval conference were trying to outlaw the use of submarines as commerce raiders, the Admiralty was designing and building the world’s most powerful corsair submarine, to destroy single-handed entire convoys of merchant ships. This book explores the historical background to submarine cruisers, the personalities involved in X.1’s design and service, the spy drama surrounding her launch, the treason trial of a leading RN submarine commander, the ship’s chequered career, and her political demise. Despite real technical successes, she would finally fall foul of ‘black propaganda’, aimed at persuading foreign naval powers that the cruiser submarine did not work; even today uninformed opinion repeats the myth of her failure. However, it was completely ignored by other navies, who went on building submarine cruisers of their own, some larger than, but none so sophisticated as, X.1. The book analyses in detail the submarine cruisers built by the US Navy, the French and the Japanese, plus the projected German copy of X.1, the Type XI U-Boat, paying belated tribute to the real importance of the mysterious X.1.

Book U Boat 202 the Diary of a German Submarine

Download or read book U Boat 202 the Diary of a German Submarine written by A. Kendall Hall and published by . This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an account of a combat voyage undertaken by the U. 202 during the First World War. Captain von Speigel von Peckelsheim's account is well told, exciting, and with the smattering of propaganda that is to be expected from a book written during the actual war. The Captain recites run-ins with minefields, destoyers, storms, and nerves. This is, overall, an interesting book that offers a rare glimpse into the life the Imperial German Uboat fleet and it contains 9 copyright free images of World War One German uboats.

Book Pocket Battleships of the Deutschland Class

Download or read book Pocket Battleships of the Deutschland Class written by Gerhard Koop and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-10 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise, authoritative, heavily illustrated summary of this class of German WWII-era warships, covering their design histories and careers. The Deutschland class included three ships of a design so revolutionary that it defied conventional categories. Deutschland (later renamed Lützow), Admiral Scheer, and Admiral Graf Spee were simply termed Panzerschiffe (armored ships) by the Germans, but they were known to their opponents by the far more evocative term Pocket Battleships. Part of a six-volume series on the German Navy’s WWII-era warships written by Gerhard Koop and illustrated by Klaus-Peter Schmolke, this book contains an account of the development of the Deutschland class, a detailed description of the ships with full technical details, and an outline of their service, heavily illustrated with plans, battle maps, and a substantial collection of photographs.
