Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Worlds of Fashion, Vol. 3: A Novel With almost inexpressible tenderness, Lady Pentarvon clung to her husband, as if she would shield him from the danger that awaited him by the interposition of her own trembling form. The tears flowed freely from Lord Pentarvon's eyes, as he returned her loving embraces in sad silence. 'My Blanche, my darling!' he murmured, 'you have read my letter, and you know that in return for your angelic forgiveness of my mad and cruel fault, I ask no explanation of you - seek to understand nothing of the circumstances in which your name has become involved; do not let us refer to them again.' Download or read book The Cambridge Global History of Fashion Volume 1 written by Christopher Breward and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 849 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume I surveys the long history of fashion from the ancient world to c. 1800. The volume seeks to answer fundamental questions on the origins of fashion, challenging Eurocentric explanations that the emergence of fashion was a European phenomenon and shows instead that fashion found early expressions across the globe well before the age of European colonialism and imperialism. It sheds light on how fashion was experienced in a multitude of ways depending on class, gender, and race, and despite geographical distance, fashion connected populations across the globe. Fashions flowered and were reseeded, through entanglements of empire, forced and voluntary migration, evolving racial systems, burgeoning sea travel and transcontinental systems.

Book Between Two Worlds The autos sacramentales of Sor Juana In s de la Cruz

Download or read book Between Two Worlds The autos sacramentales of Sor Juana In s de la Cruz written by Amy Fuller and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventeenth-century Mexican poet, playwright and nun, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, is best known for her secular works, most notably her damning indictment of male double standards, Hombres necios (Stupid Men). However, her autos sacramentales (allegorical one-act plays on the Eucharist) have received little attention, and have only been discussed individually and out of sequence. By examining them as a collection, in their original order, their meaning and importance are revealed. The autos combine Christian and classical ‘pagan’ imagery from the ‘Old World’ with the conquest and conversion of the ‘New World’. As the plays progress, the mystery of Christ’s ‘greatest gift’ to mankind is deciphered and is mirrored in Spain’s gift of the True Faith to the indigenous Mexicans. Sor Juana’s own image is also situated within this baroque landscape: presented as a triumph of Spanish imperialism, an exotic muse between two worlds.

Book Resilience of Luxury Companies in Times of Change

Download or read book Resilience of Luxury Companies in Times of Change written by Gabriella Lojacono and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-08-23 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some luxury companies remain resilient through times of change, while others do not? The reason is that these companies have unique skills to diversify their revenue generation by being ambidextrous. Luxury companies today cannot depend on their reputation or their creativity alone to remain resilient, rather they require the ability to be ambidextrous – to explore new trajectories for future growth and exploiting their iconic values. In past decades, the industry has shifted from product to customer centric and forced companies to adopt new strategies and approaches to succeed. This includes the adoption of digital platforms such as ecommerce, social media and mobile enabled tools to continually elevate customer experience. In addition, new business models have emerged to address growing pains, particularly in inventory issues, over manufacturing and sustainability. Brands today are forced to adopt evolution through innovation that is anchored by new values without compromising their DNA. Based on in-depth research and interviews with CEOs from leading luxury companies, Lojacono and Pan show how companies can hedge their risks and remain resilient in times of change.

Book Fashion and Class

Download or read book Fashion and Class written by Rachel Worth and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In what ways do changing notions of social class correspond with key developments in the history of fashion? Focusing on examples ranging from 18th-century Britain to aspects of the global fashion industry in the early 21st century, Fashion and Class examines the meaning and evolution of the term 'class', from its Marxist origins to modern day interpretations. Did industrialisation, technological change and developments in fashion retailing bring about a degree of 'class levelling' or in fact intensify class antagonism? And to what extent does modern mass consumption and cheap labour revive some of the ethical issues faced in 19th-century British textile factories? Exploring a variety of case studies that examine the changing relationships between fashion and class in different historical contexts, from the French revolutionaries of the 1780-90s through to the changing relationships between couture, designer and high-street fashion in the mid-20th century and onwards, Fashion and Class is essential reading for those wishing to understand the ways in which the fashion system is closely connected with ideas of class.
