Spending his days walking the streets and his nights drinking and gambling, meeting revolutionaries, zealots, lovers and libertines, he adjusts his eyes to the darkness that falls over Europe, and threatens to destroy him. Mihail Sebastian's 1934 masterpiece, now translated into English for the first time, was written amid the anti-Semitism which would, by the end of the decade, force him out of his career and turn his friends and colleagues against him. For Two Thousand Years is a prescient, heart-wrenching chronicle of resilience and despair, broken layers of memory and the terrible forces of history.

Book excerpt: On the banks of Lake Gennesaret, Publius Lentulus (Emmanuel) has an encounter with Christ; Publius has gone to beseech Jesus to heal his little daughter, Flavia, who has contracted leprosy. Moved and magnetized by emotions he has never felt before, he hears the Master tell him: “... It would have been better if you had come publicly and in broad daylight in order to learn once and for all the sublime lesson of faith and humility. “... After many years of deviation from the path of the good due to your blatant wrongs, today you have come to the turning point for the regeneration of your entire life. “... It is up to you, however, to take advantage of it either now or a few millennia from now... “... But no one can impose an act that is against your conscience if it is your desire to spurn this blessed moment indefinitely!” He perceives that Jesus is praying. That very night, his daughter begins to improve noticeably until she is completely well. What are the consequences of this encounter with the Divine Master? Flavia is healed. Livia, Publius’s wife, a patrician woman, converts to Christianity. Publius returns to his political affairs but refuses to believe that Jesus was the author of his daughter’s recovery. Emmanuel narrates this personal experience with the richness of detail that characterizes all his books so that we can ponder the precious “moments” that we are offered throughout our lives; moments that are often wasted, thereby retarding our progress and evolution.

Book The Great Lakes of Africa

Download or read book The Great Lakes of Africa written by Jean-Pierre Chrétien and published by Mit Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first English-language publication of a major history of the Great Lakes region of Africa. Though the genocide of 1994 catapulted Rwanda onto the international stage, English-language historical accounts of the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa--which encompasses Burundi, eastern Congo, Rwanda, western Tanzania, and Uganda--are scarce. Drawing on colonial archives, oral tradition, archeological discoveries, anthropologic and linguistic studies, and his thirty years of scholarship, Jean-Pierre Chr tien offers a major synthesis of the history of the region, one still plagued by extremely violent wars. This translation brings the work of a leading French historian to an English-speaking audience for the first time. Chr tien retraces the human settlement and the formation of kingdoms around the sources of the Nile, which were "discovered" by European explorers around 1860. He describes these kingdoms' complex social and political organization and analyzes how German, British, and Belgian colonizers not only transformed and exploited the existing power structures, but also projected their own racial categories onto them. Finally, he shows how the independent states of the postcolonial era, in particular Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda, have been trapped by their colonial and precolonial legacies, especially by the racial rewriting of the latter by the former. Today, argues Chr tien, the Great Lakes of Africa is a crucial region for historical research--not only because its history is fascinating but also because the tragedies of its present are very much a function of the political manipulations of its past.

Book excerpt: Much about the early history of mankind had become entirely lost until the restoration of the gospel. These details about the first 2,000 years of human history are all to be found in this exciting volume. We now know that Adam and Eve had two generations of children before Cain and Abel were born. The exact year of the Great Flood can now be calculated. Details about the golden age of Enoch are now available so that we can understand how the law of consecration works and how it eliminates poverty and crime. One of the most magnificent stories in this book is the life of Abraham. He received revelations about astronomy and mathematics which he later taught the Egyptians. He was a remarkable example of faith and obedience, even in offering his own son as a sacrifice to the God he loved. All of these tremendously important new revelations belong to the sweeping panorama of the first 2,000 years of human history. This book is designed to make the study of the Old Testament an inspirational pleasure. Although presented for easy reading, the text is carefully documented so that every important point can be correlated with appropriate passages in the scriptures. The extensive use of maps, charts and illustrations also facilitate the rapid unfolding of the Biblical story. Download or read book The way the truth and the life written by Francisco Cândido Xavier and published by FEB Editora. This book was released on 2021-10-10 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is part of an outstanding collection, which includes: Our daily bread, Living spring, and Vineyard of light. The collection was written by the spirit Emmanuel, who seeks to guide Spiritists in the practice of Christian principles, leading them to find in the teachings of Jesus their inner transformation, which cannot be postponed. In the book’s 180 chapters, the author brilliantly comments on several verses from the New Testament. From each page spring the depth of concept and the lightness of form in which they are outlined. The spirit author shows Spiritism duly based on the lessons of the New Testament as being an opportunity for work and growth for those who long for the renewal of their minds. The way, the truth and the life is nourishment for the spirit, strengthening it for its daily struggles.

Book Emmanuel s Book

Book excerpt: Here is the revealing underground classic, a work that stands beside the "Seth" books as a delightful and invaluable guide to our inner spirit and our outer world. Emmanuel speaks to us through Pat Rodegast and shares his wisdom and insights on all aspects of life. Beautifully written and illustrated, Emmanuel's Book I is to be treasured, enjoyed and passed on to a friend. Emmanuel says: "The gifts I wish to give you are my deepest love, the safety of truth, the wisdom of the universe and the reality of God . . . . The issue of whether there is a Greater Reality or not, for me at least, has been settled. I know that there is. So I will speak to you from the knowing that I possess." Ram Dass, in the introduction, says: "Being with Emmanuel one comes to appreciate the vast evolutionary context in which our lives are being lived . . . And at each moment we are at just the right place in the journey. As Emmanuel points out, 'Who you are is a necessary step to being who you will be.'"
