Book Every Story Has Two Sides

Download or read book Every Story Has Two Sides written by C. Natasha Richburg and published by St. Paul Press. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every Story Has Two Sides is a coming of age series of short stories. It illustrates lessons that take place in the life of many characters that touch on, or are part of, the life of Dallas Davis. The short stories intertwine the complex parent-child, boyfriend-girlfriend and sinner-convert relationships as the reader witness the young adult coming of age experience. Intended to provide lessons for both young adults and parents, Every Story Has Two Sides gives a unique perspective that affords an opportunity for all to think outside of the box. Poetic fluency coupled with scriptural references enhances the outside of the box experience where a different perspective of life s situations is exposed to the reader. The book welcomes multi-generational discussions to take place at the table in which God is the conversational centerpiece."

Book The Two Sides of Perception

Download or read book The Two Sides of Perception written by Richard B. Ivry and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anatomically, the central nervous system looks remarkably symmetrical--from the relatively simple structures of the spinal cord to the extensively convoluted folds of the cerebral hemispheres. At the functional level, however, there are striking differences between the left and right hemispheres. Although popular writings attribute language abilities to the left hemisphere and spatial abilities to the right, differences in hemispheric function appear to be more subtle. According to Ivry and Robertson, asymmetries over a wide range of perceptual tasks reflect a difference in strength rather than kind, with both hemispheres contributing to the performance of complex tasks, whether linguistic or spatial. After an historical introduction, the authors offer a cognitive neuroscience perspective on hemispheric specialization in perception. They propose that the two hemispheres differ in how they filter task-relevant sensory information. Building on the idea that the hemispheres construct asymmetric representations, the hypothesis provides a novel account of many laterality effects. A notable feature of the authors' work is their attempt to incorporate hemispheric specialization in vision, audition, music, and language within a common framework. In support of their theory, they review studies involving both healthy and neurologically impaired individuals. They also provide a series of simulations to demonstrate the underlying computational principles of their theory. Their work thus describes both the cognitive and neurological architecture of hemispheric asymmetries in perception.

Book Two Sides of a Barricade

Download or read book Two Sides of a Barricade written by Christian Scholl and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Sides of a Barricade argues that to construct global democracy, conflict and dissent must be taken seriously. Christian Scholl explores the political significance of the confrontations within four sites of interaction: bodies, space, communication, and law. Each site of struggle provides a different entry point to understand the influence of protester and police tactics on each other. At the same time, the four sites of struggle allow a comprehensive analysis of how the contestation of global hegemonic forces during summit protests trigger a preemptive shift in social control through increased deployment of biopolitical forms of power.

Book excerpt: This story is inspired by real events. It was a chilly September evening when the body of a young pro-democracy protester surfaced in Hong Kong's eastern Yau Tong Bay. The local police quickly concluded his death as accidental drowning but fellow protesters believe it was part of a dark ploy by the authorities to quash the political movement. James Lai, the Han Herald's senior reporter, is assigned to investigate the mysterious death. Unbeknownst to him, the assignment is a front created by his editors to shift the narrative against leaders in Beijing, unnerved by the intensified public opinion. As he digs deeper, he finds himself coming to close brush with the forces of a power struggle among the Party's top brass. His pursuit of the truth challenges his personal and professional integrity at every step of the way. Faced with a politically-pressured media environment in Hong Kong and the Herald newsroom that has declined from a once globally respected publication to a propaganda mouthpiece, James can only trust his own journalistic beliefs and dogged reporting to piece together the mystery and bring the story to life. Nonetheless, the answers he uncovers of the conspiracy are more sinister than he could have imagined.

Book Both Sides Now

Download or read book Both Sides Now written by Peyton Thomas and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A witty and warm-hearted novel about a trans teen finding his place in the world perfect for fans of Red, White and Royal Blue There’s only one thing standing between Finch Kelly and a full-blown case of high school senioritis: the National Speech & Debate Tournament. Taking home the gold would not only be the pinnacle of Finch’s debating career, but the perfect way to launch himself into his next chapter: college in Washington, DC, and a history-making career as the first trans congressman. What could possibly go wrong? Well, for starters, Finch could develop a teeny tiny crush on his very attractive, very taken, and very gay debate partner, Jonah. Never mind that Finch has never considered whether he’s interested in more than just girls. And that dream of college in DC? Finch hasn’t exactly been accepted anywhere yet, let alone received the full-ride scholarship he’ll need to make this dream a reality. Worst of all, though, is this year’s topic for Nationals: transgender rights. If he wants to cinch the gold, and get into college, Finch might have to argue against his own humanity. People say there are two sides to every argument. But, as Finch is about to discover, some things—like who you are and who you love—are not up for debate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflecting the importance of the self in optimal functioning, a vast literature on the value of different self-processes is accumulating. Individual research reports, however, frequently present a one-sided view, focusing either on the benefits or the liabilities of the self-process under study. A more complete understanding of both the benefits and liabilities of a self-process is essential because it profoundly shapes the conclusions of existing research and directions of future research. To that end, this special issue brings together leading researchers to present their unique perspectives on the benefits and liabilities of the self-process they study.
