Book A Century of Welsh Myth in Children s Literature

Download or read book A Century of Welsh Myth in Children s Literature written by Donna R. White and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1998-04-08 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myth, legend, and folklore have been entrenched in children's literature for several centuries and continue to be popular. Some of the most ancient traditional tales still extant come from the Celtic cultures of France and the British Isles, whose languages are among the oldest in Europe. Among these tales are four native Welsh legends collectively known as the Mabinogi, which were first translated into English in 1845 by Lady Charlotte Guest. Numerous children's books have been based on the Mabinogi since then, and many have received awards and critical acclaim. Because these books are written for children, they are not necessarily faithful retellings of the original tales. Instead, authors have had to select certain elements to include and others to exclude. This book examines how authors of children's fantasy literature from the 19th century to the present have adapted Welsh myth to meet the perceived needs of their young audience. The volume begins with a summary of the four principle tales of the Mabinogi: Pwyll Prince of Dyfed, Branwen Daughter of Llyr, Manawydan Son of Llyr, and Math Son of Mathonwy. Books based on the Mabinogi generally fall into two categories: retellings of the myths, and original works of fantasy partially inspired by the Welsh tales. Beginning with Sidney Lanier's The Boy's Mabinogion, the first part of this book examines versions of the myths published for children between 1881 and 1988. The second part discusses imaginative literature that borrows elements from the Mabinogi, including Alan Garner's The Owl Service, which won a Carnegie medal, and Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain, the final volume of which received the ALA Newbery Award for outstanding children's book.

Book Why Skeets Malloy Has Two Heads

Download or read book Why Skeets Malloy Has Two Heads written by Richard Shaver and published by eStar Books. This book was released on 2011-05-23 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AN OLD CARNY MAN DOESN'T LIKE TO GIVE AWAY TRADE SECRETS, AND SKEETS HAD GOOD REASONS WHEN HE TRIED TO . . . BUT THE PROF USED A VERY ODD TRICK TO STOP HIM!ExcerptSo you want to know why Skeets looks like that? Well, I'm probably one of the few men on the face of the Earth who could tell you the honest lowdown on Skeets Malloy. I've known Skeets ever since he poked them two heads of his through this carny's office-wagon door and got himself a job. That was a long time ago. Skeets was born that way, of course. But it never bothered him being different, until he met the Professor. You see, he wasn't really different from other people, not the way he looked at it, and he didn't even think much about being different. The Professor changed all that and ruined poor Skeers for life. If it wasn't for this carny- Well, you know how people are about such things. But he's pretty happy now, and it turned out to be a good thing for our set-up here, too. You see, aside from his two heads, Skeets turned out to be an old carnival man. Just a natural for the business, you might say. But let me tell you about it. Skeets had always accepted his appearance, just like you accept having two legs and one nose and freckles. He's a cagey guy, too. It would take the sharpest con in the rackets to touch Skeets for more than bus fare.

Book excerpt: Worlds and hearts collide in this beloved tale by New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery. All-pomp-no-play Princess Alexandra Wyndham gets a royal wake-up call when a letter arrives at the palace, alleging the rightful heir to her throne is alive. Now she must travel to the ranch of the most majestic man she’s ever met. Cowboy Mitch Colton might be the key to finding her missing brother…if she can keep her focus on the search instead of the sexy rancher. Mitch is tight-lipped when it comes to the whereabouts of his elusive stepbrother—the suspected long-lost heir!—but he grudgingly opens his home to Alexandra. He can't seem to resist the regal beauty, and it isn't long before he opens his heart to her, as well. But can their romance survive their abiding differences…and the revelation of a royal baby on the way?
