Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Letters to the Reverend Moses Stuart: On the Subject of Religious Liberty In the Recorder of the next week, the Editor assumes a. Very different tone. He cools down most wonderfully. He pub lishes a clear, definite, deliberate statement, which I wish the public to notice and remember. These are the words Sup pose it can be satisfactorily proved that Mr. Whitman's Letters are made up of misstatements, misrepresentations, and distortions of the truth, will our unitarian friends then say that we have spoken of the Letters or their Author with too much severity or contempt? If this cannot be proved, we engage to plead guilty, and relinquish the orthodox men and measures assailed by Mr. Whitman. Here then I take my stand. I wish the Christian public to act the part of an impartial jury. They will remember the proposition to be proved. It is not, whether there may be some inaccuracies and mistakes in my multitude of statements; for I have always allowed this to be possible and even probable, and expressed much anxiety to have such imperfections mentioned. The plain unvarnished truth is enough in all conscience. No the orthodox are to prove, that my letters are made up of misstatements, misrepresentations, and distortions of the truth.' I wish to assure this Editor, that I shall engage in no Indian war fare. I have given my name to the public, and am ready to give the names and certificates of my witnesses, when necessary for my defence. I shall expect the author of the thorough review to do the same for anonymous declarations will not satisfy our jury. Book The Common School Awakening

Download or read book The Common School Awakening written by David Komline and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A statue of Horace Mann, erected in front of the Boston State House in 1863, declares him the "Father of the American Public School System." For over a century and a half, most narratives about early American education have taken this epithet as the truth. As Mann looms over the Boston Common, so he has also loomed over discussions of early American schooling. Other scholarship has emphasized economic factors as the main reason for the emergence of public schools. The Common School Awakening offers a new narrative about the rise of public schools in America that counters these conceptions. In this book, David Komline explains how a broad and distinctly American religious consensus emerged in the first half of the nineteenth century, allowing people from across the religious spectrum to cooperate in systematizing and professionalizing America's schools in an effort to Christianize the country. At the height of this movement, several states introduced state-sponsored teacher training colleges and concentrated government oversight of schools in offices such as the one held by Mann. Shortly thereafter, the religious consensus that had served as the foundation for this common school system disintegrated. But the system itself remained, the legacy of not just one man, but of a whole network of reformers who put into motion a transatlantic and transdenominational religious movement - the "Common School Awakening."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a powerful challenge to conventional wisdom, Philip Hamburger argues that the separation of church and state has no historical foundation in the First Amendment. The detailed evidence assembled here shows that eighteenth-century Americans almost never invoked this principle. Although Thomas Jefferson and others retrospectively claimed that the First Amendment separated church and state, separation became part of American constitutional law only much later. Hamburger shows that separation became a constitutional freedom largely through fear and prejudice. Jefferson supported separation out of hostility to the Federalist clergy of New England. Nativist Protestants (ranging from nineteenth-century Know Nothings to twentieth-century members of the K.K.K.) adopted the principle of separation to restrict the role of Catholics in public life. Gradually, these Protestants were joined by theologically liberal, anti-Christian secularists, who hoped that separation would limit Christianity and all other distinct religions. Eventually, a wide range of men and women called for separation. Almost all of these Americans feared ecclesiastical authority, particularly that of the Catholic Church, and, in response to their fears, they increasingly perceived religious liberty to require a separation of church from state. American religious liberty was thus redefined and even transformed. In the process, the First Amendment was often used as an instrument of intolerance and discrimination.
