Book excerpt: 'A book which goes on a special shelf in my library.' P.G. Wodehouse What the Butler Saw (1962) is one of E.S. Turner's most pertinent and illuminating 'social histories', an exploration of the 'upstairs/downstairs' relationship across three centuries of English life. Drawing on literature, contemporary accounts and household manuals, Turner describes in fascinating detail how it came to be that the upper classes felt a need for an ever larger household staff, engaged in every imaginable form of drudgery; and, accordingly, how those in service - from high to low, butler to footman, housemaid to au pair - had to give satisfaction to their masters and mistresses while also, on occasions, contending with physical blows, tantrums, and (in the cases of some unfortunate servant girls) threats to their virtue.

Book excerpt: Stars Hollow Public Library’s Willard Romney-Trump VI aims a shotgun at two miscreants, Miss Kim and Mr. Kanye. The couple breaks into the SHPL looking for fuel (books!) to burn for warmth. Due to climate change, the U.S. and Canada are twin popsicles stuck in an ice age. Fifth-great grandson of Donald Trump, librarian Romney-Trump is an extreme book-lover. He will not hesitate to employ extreme measures to defend his library’s collection. Set in fictional hometown of the fictional the Gilmore Girls (Stars Hollow, Connecticut) two hundred years in the future, ELECTION 2220: Night of the Voting Dead uses big teeth to take big bites out of today’s body politic. Despite a wall — built and paid for by Mexico — most Americans still flee south where they are illegal aliens. Left behind in Stars Hollow, are zombies, vampires, werewolves, a Gilmore Girl, and climate-deniers descended from America’s first Denier-in-Chief, Donald Trump. That includes Willard. He has been enforcing library policy via mass murder for decades. The corpses have been dumped behind the library and left to freeze. Stars Hollow will hold a mayoral election in November 2220. Given the town’s Game of Thrones atmosphere, it will be nastiest in over two hundred years. African American, liberal democrat mayor Russell Limbaugh-Trump has been challenged by his severely conservative distant cousin Mrs. Sarah Palin-Trump. A rare 50-degree “heat wave” defrosts dead behind the library. Zombies walk again! Stars Hollow is now threatened by a putrid-faction demanding its right to vote. If zombies are given the vote, these stinkers might very well swing the election. That will make someone happy. Meanwhile, Willard, who is to blame for the chaos, tries to figure out his love life. He is torn between old flame Lorelei Gilmore, children’s librarian, and Merrily, a letter carrier for the Amazon Prime/ FEDEX/US Parcel Postal Service. Unknown to clueless Willard, both women hold dark secrets; neither is whom (or what) she appears to be. A plus, though; neither is descended from Donald Trump.

Book excerpt: Is teaching for me? Who will I teach? How can I make a difference? Teach is a vibrant and engaging Introduction to Education textbook, organized around real questions students ask themselves and their professors as they consider a career in teaching. Using vivid and contemporary examples, veteran teacher educator James W. Fraser continually encourages readers to reflect on their experiences and engage in a dialogue about the most current issues in education. The thoroughly updated third edition includes fully rewritten chapters, including one discussing the current debates about classroom discussions of race and sexuality and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on schools and another on today’s newest technologies and their impact on teachers and schools. In each chapter, newly selected primary source readings provide students with the latest in education-related scholarship and integrates the intellectual foundations of education throughout each chapter, offering scholarly and current content in a student-friendly format. Features and updates include: • In a new, thoroughly revised and up-to-date but also much more compact version, the third edition of the popular Teach textbook for basic courses in a teacher education program invites aspiring teachers and the simply curious to ponder many of the most essential questions of what a career in teaching might look like in the next decades of the 21st century. • Up-to-date coverage of new legislation and school policies that impact teachers including debates about discussions on race and Critical Race Theory, sexuality and the importance of LGBTQ+ history and current rights that influence curricula, school policies, and teachers' free-speech rights, with particular emphasis on the declining role of the Common Core State Standards. • A completely rewritten Chapter 8 offers an up-to-the-minute overview of how technology can help improve and challenge teachers and teaching. • Features such as “Teachable Moment” and “Notes from the Field” encourage readers—through a variety of prompts and exercises—to reflect on their own educational experiences and goals, and challenge prospective teachers to imagine themselves in similar situations. • Short chapters and digestible sections provide an approach and format to reach students without compromising on high-quality content. • The concluding chapter explores the question, “Where do I go from here?” to help prospective teachers develop a plan for their career and design a personal philosophy to guide them. Teach presents an overview of the field in a way sure to keep students reading and gives those with questions about teaching the tools and information they need to continue a rich dialogue about their possible careers.
