Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a winter day in 1892, in the broad daylight of downtown Memphis, Tennessee, a middle class woman named Alice Mitchell slashed the throat of her lover, Freda Ward, killing her instantly. Local, national, and international newspapers, medical and scientific publications, and popular fiction writers all clamored to cover the ensuing “girl lovers” murder trial. Lisa Duggan locates in this sensationalized event the emergence of the lesbian in U.S. mass culture and shows how newly “modern” notions of normality and morality that arose from such cases still haunt and distort lesbian and gay politics to the present day. Situating this story alongside simultaneously circulating lynching narratives (and its resistant versions, such as those of Memphis antilynching activist Ida B. Wells) Duggan reveals how stories of sex and violence were crucial to the development of American modernity. While careful to point out the differences between the public reigns of terror that led to many lynchings and the rarer instances of the murder of one woman by another privately motivated woman, Duggan asserts that dominant versions of both sets of stories contributed to the marginalization of African Americans and women while solidifying a distinctly white, male, heterosexual form of American citizenship. Having explored the role of turn-of-the-century print media—and in particular their tendency toward sensationalism—Duggan moves next to a review of sexology literature and to novels, most notably Radclyffe Hall’s The Well of Loneliness. Sapphic Slashers concludes with two appendices, one of which presents a detailed summary of Ward’s murder, the trial, and Mitchell’s eventual institutionalization. The other presents transcriptions of letters exchanged between the two women prior to the crime. Combining cultural history, feminist and queer theory, narrative analysis, and compelling storytelling, Sapphic Slashers provides the first history of the emergence of the lesbian in twentieth-century mass culture.

Book Alice Freda Forever

Download or read book Alice Freda Forever written by Alexis Coe and published by Millbrook Press. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alice + Freda Forever is a gut-wrenching story of love, death, and the dangers of intolerance."—Bustle In 1892, America was obsessed with a teenage murderess, but it wasn't her crime that shocked the nation—it was her motivation. Nineteen-year-old Alice Mitchell had planned to pass as a man in order to marry her seventeen-year-old fiancée Freda Ward, but when their love letters were discovered, they were forbidden from ever speaking again. Freda adjusted to this fate with an ease that stunned a heartbroken Alice. Her desperation grew with each unanswered letter—and her father's razor soon went missing. On January 25, Alice publicly slashed her ex-fiancée's throat. Her same-sex love was deemed insane by her father that very night, and medical experts agreed: This was a dangerous and incurable perversion. As the courtroom was expanded to accommodate national interest, Alice spent months in jail—including the night that three of her fellow prisoners were lynched (an event which captured the attention of journalist and civil rights activist Ida B. Wells). After a jury of "the finest men in Memphis" declared Alice insane, she was remanded to an asylum, where she died under mysterious circumstances just a few years later. Alice + Freda Forever recounts this tragic, real-life love story with over 100 illustrated love letters, maps, artifacts, historical documents, newspaper articles, courtroom proceedings, and intimate, domestic scenes.

Download or read book 2 Girls 1 Cup written by Lin Xun and published by No Pledge Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supermodel and super-writer Lin Xun exposes "2 girls 1 cup"! Her phrase is shorthand for "Stalin and Hitler," and especially when those two hooked-up together. It is also shorthand for "Stalin and Mao" and their coupling too. There was a sick union shared by all 3 of the gangbangers: Stalin, Mao, and Hitler. They were joined by comrades in the USA. Their compatriots continue to cover up their depraved lifestyle today. Top historical discoveries of the century are revealed in this book, including: (1) Congress and the Flag Code confirm that the military salute was the origin of the Nazi salute. (2) The USA's Pledge of Allegiance inspired Nazi rituals. (3) Public schools spread Nazi behavior. (4) Swastikas represented crossed "S" letter shapes for "socialist" under Hitler. Top historical discoveries undisputed by the NEW YORK TIMES * The Washington Post * Los Angeles Times * San Francisco Chronicle * Tampa Bay Times * Chicago Tribune * Newsday * The New York Times Book Review * Tampa Tribune * Library Journal * Publishers Weekly * Saint Petersburg Times * People * Entertainment Weekly * Vogue * O: The Oprah Magazine ! They are astounding discoveries by the historian Dr. Rex Curry. To an astronomer, this would be almost like finding water on Mars. To a physician, like discovering the cure to a disease. Plus, new death of Fidel Castro bonus at no extra charge! The publisher's search continues for photographs and old film footage showing presidents, members of congress, and other officials on the federal, state, county, and city levels doing the Nazi salute to the U.S. flag. Please send any images or inquiries to the email address of the publisher mentioned in the book. A large quantity of such material is in the archives of the historian Dr. Rex Curry. Anyone who doubts that Hitler used the swastika to represent "S" letter shapes for "Socialism" is someone who believes Hitler was blind and that Hitler remained blind throughout the decades that Hitler used the symbol for his National Socialist Party. Eventually, Dr. Curry's discovery about the swastika will become so well-known and so obvious that no one will believe that Dr. Curry "made the discovery that Hitler used the swastika to represent 'S' letter shapes for 'socialism'" because no one will believe that there ever was a time when people could not recognize Dr. Curry's scholarship as self-evident. People will not believe that there ever was a time when the world did not notice the glaring truth about the differences between Hitler's symbol, swastikas, and their alterations. People of the future will not believe that people of today were so blind and ignorant. It will be Dr. Curry's revolutionary paradigm shift. The same path of doubt, dissemination, and eventual widespread acceptance will occur regarding Dr. Curry's discovery that the Pledge of Allegiance was the origin of the Nazi salute and Nazi behavior. It will be another revolutionary paradigm shift. "There is rumor of a Pulitzer Prize for exposing the Pledge of Allegiance as the origin of Nazi salutes and Nazi behavior; and the swastika as alphabetical 'S' letter shaped symbolism for 'socialist.' Hooray!" - R. Yates Bloodsworth, Stop The Pledge (STP) Foundation "The professor's work left us speechless!" - Tampa Tribune Newspaper "The symbol presently known as Lin Xun wrote a game-changer with this book." - Timothy Cruz "For all the women in the world who have been christened with 'Swastika' as their name, Dr. Curry is a hero and an international treasure. His work is a welcome revelation." - Swastika Mukher "Before these revelations, Americans could not speak the truth about the Pledge of Allegiance. Dr. Curry is the Rosa Parks of the pledge. He is the Ruby Bridges of the schools, having changed them forever." - No Pledge Publishing "This book will make you wonder if anything you know is true." - Dead Writers Club

Book The Case of the Murderous Dr Cream

Download or read book The Case of the Murderous Dr Cream written by Dean Jobb and published by Algonquin Books. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A tour de force of storytelling.” —Louise Penny, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Chief Inspector Gamache series “Jobb’s excellent storytelling makes the book a pleasure to read.” —The New York Times Book Review ”When a doctor does go wrong he is the first of criminals,” Sherlock Holmes observed during one of his most baffling investigations. “He has nerve and he has knowledge.” In the span of fifteen years, Dr. Thomas Neill Cream murdered as many as ten people in the United States, Britain, and Canada, a death toll with almost no precedent. Poison was his weapon of choice. Largely forgotten today, this villain was as brazen as the notorious Jack the Ripper. Structured around the doctor’s London murder trial in 1892, when he was finally brought to justice, The Case of the Murderous Dr. Cream exposes the blind trust given to medical practitioners, as well as the flawed detection methods, bungled investigations, corrupt officials, and stifling morality of Victorian society that allowed Dr. Cream to prey on vulnerable and desperate women, many of whom had turned to him for medical help. Dean Jobb transports readers to the late nineteenth century as Scotland Yard traces Dr. Cream’s life through Canada and Chicago and finally to London, where new investigative tools called forensics were just coming into use, even as most police departments still scoffed at using science to solve crimes. But then, most investigators could hardly imagine that serial killers existed—the term was unknown. As the Chicago Tribune wrote, Dr. Cream’s crimes marked the emergence of a new breed of killer: one who operated without motive or remorse, who “murdered simply for the sake of murder.” For fans of Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City, all things Sherlock Holmes, or the podcast My Favorite Murder, The Case of the Murderous Dr. Cream is an unforgettable true crime story from a master of the genre.

Download or read book Just Another Southern Town written by Joan Quigley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-30 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January of 1950, Mary Church Terrell, an 86-year-old charter member of the NAACP, headed into Thompson's Restaurant, just a few blocks from the White House, and requested to be served. She and her companions were informed by the manager that they could not eat in his establishment, because they were "colored." Terrell, a former suffragette and one of the country's first college-educated African American women, took the matter to court. Three years later, the Supreme Court vindicated her outrage: District of Columbia v. John R. Thompson Co., Inc. was decided in June 1953, invalidating the segregation of restaurants and cafes in the nation's capital. In Just Another Southern Town, Joan Quigley recounts an untold chapter of the civil rights movement: an epic battle to topple segregation in Washington, the symbolic home of American democracy. At the book's heart is the formidable Mary Church Terrell and the test case she mounts seeking to enforce Reconstruction-era laws prohibiting segregation in D.C. restaurants. Through the prism of Terrell's story, Quigley reassesses Washington's relationship to civil rights history, bringing to life a pivotal fight for equality that erupted five years before Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of a Montgomery bus and a decade before the student sit-in movement rocked segregated lunch counters across the South. At a time when most civil rights scholarship begins with Brown v. Board of Education, Just Another Southern Town unearths the story of the nation's capital as an early flashpoint on race. A rich portrait of American politics and society in the mid-20th century, it interweaves Terrell's narrative with the courtroom drama of the case and the varied personalities of the justices who ultimately voted unanimously to prohibit segregated restaurants. Resonating with gestures of courage and indignation that radiate from the capital's streets and sidewalks to its marble-clad seats of power, this work restores Mary Church Terrell and the case that launched a crusade to their rightful place in the pantheon of civil rights history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology textbooks and books on the history of science generally give a limited picture of the roles women have played in the growth and development of the biological sciences, mentioning primarily the Nobel laureates. This book provides a definitive archival collection of essays on a larger group of women, profiling both their work and their lives. The volume includes 65 representative women from different countries and eras, and from as many branches of biological investigation as possible. In addition to biographical information and an evaluation of the woman's career and significance, each entry provides a full bibliographic listing of works by and about the subject. The volume includes entries on women who have gained recognition through attainment of advanced degrees despite familial and societal pressures, innovative research results, influence exerted in teaching and guidance of students, active participation and leadership in professional societies, extensive scholarly publication, participation on journal editorial boards, extensive field experience, and influence on public and political scientific policymaking. A woman was considered eligible for inclusion if she met several of these criteria. Providing a historical perspective, the book is limited to women who were born before 1930 or are deceased.
