Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the word “gentlemen” suggests that its heroes are adults, The Two Gentlemen of Verona is more intelligible if we think of them as boys, leaving home for the first time. One has a crush on a girl, Julia, though he hasn’t yet told her. Sent to court to learn to be “perfect gentlemen,” Valentine and Proteus are derailed by their attraction to Sylvia, the ruler’s daughter. Valentine’s mental denseness does not deter Sylvia from returning his love, but he is caught, and banished, when he tries to elope with her. Proteus’ desire for Sylvia wipes out his former love, leading him into despicable acts that win scorn from Sylvia and wound Julia, who has pursued him disguised as a boy. When Sylvia follows Valentine into banishment, Proteus follows Sylvia, and Julia follows Proteus, the stage is set for a disturbing ending. But the stage is also set for the “gentlemen” to take small steps toward maturity. Book Writer s Block

Download or read book Writer s Block written by Suresh Subrahmanyan and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Suresh Subrahmanyan’s third volume of tongue-in-cheek vignettes on a variety of subjects. There is no topic or issue under the sun that does not come under his genial and articulate gaze. He wields his pen, in a manner of speaking, with considerable panache and style. His love for the English language is amply evident in the way in which he crafts every sentence with minute care. He is greatly influenced by the British school of writing and the great authors from that formidable stable. He is unapologetic about adopting a slightly old-fashioned style, as he believes the present generation who read (and that tribe is rapidly dwindling) should appreciate that this is the language of Shakespeare and Milton, without the likes of whom we would all be talking to each other with a vocabulary that does not go beyond words like cool, awesome, shoot, OMG and lowbrow slang like my bad, I’m good, and get a life, bro. In the author’s own words, “Texting trumps writing and language pays the price.” Suresh Subrahmanyan tries to make amends.

Book Through the Glass

Download or read book Through the Glass written by Helen Beede and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-06 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the Glass: The Reality of Working at a For-Profit New York Nursing Home During the COVID-19 Pandemic By: Helen Beede The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on our society and exposed the disparities of our vulnerable populations. No group has been impacted as heavily as the residents of for-profit nursing homes. This first-hand account by a healthcare worker details the devastation caused by the virus once introduced into a home for the most vulnerable. What began with a few residents testing positive in the hospital quickly progressed to others in the facility developing symptoms with dozens dying and many others left with long-term health effects. There were many opportunities for management to intervene and minimize the spread. Instead, the virus was allowed to spread unchecked among residents and staff. Almost as disturbing as the illness itself is the skill with which management was able to convince the majority of the staff and public that their response was exemplary given the circumstances. The decisions made behind closed doors rarely put the wellbeing of the residents first. Lack of accountability has been a longstanding problem in for-profit nursing homes. While the residents suffer and families are left in the dark, the nursing home industry is lobbying for less liability and less regulation. The employees of this industry are overworked, understaffed and forced to choose between providing patient care, protecting themselves and defending the actions of their corporations. Without more oversight, these companies will continue to get rich by taking advantage of those who are uninformed or left with no other options.
