Book Twinkling of an I in the Eye of the Self

Download or read book Twinkling of an I in the Eye of the Self written by Marcus M. Cornelius and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-03-03 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twinkling is an autobiography with a difference: it is not mainly an account of the outer life of a person. It reveals the emergence of the increasing influence of the inner self, and does so much as an image is revealed when a photo is being slowly developed, which image, necessarily, at the start of the process is barely visible. What emerges is the story of the growing importance of the influence of the Self. And because the life concerned was, from an early adult stage, most significantly changed by the presence in it of the effect and guidance of the latihan of Subud (Susila Budhi Dharma), the book relates how that influence began, how it developed and how it moved a life towards its fulfilment, frequently in ways that were completely unexpected. Of course, confusion and the tension between competing alternatives are always at our disposal. What is always at our disposal as well, though it is harder to perceive in amongst all the confusion, is the clarity and wisdom that can inform and guide the development of our Self in what is, after all, a one-off performance. Twinkling is one story of how that clarity and wisdom can be perceived and how it can be allowed to express itself, in ways more rewarding than what we often regard as success.

Book Freedom and Self creation

Download or read book Freedom and Self creation written by Katherin A. Rogers and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Katherin A. Rogers presents a new theory of free will, based on the thought of Anselm of Canterbury. We did not originally produce ourselves. Yet, according to Anselm, we can engage in self-creation, freely and responsibly forming our characters by choosing 'from ourselves' (a se) between open options. Anselm introduces a new, agent-causal libertarianism which is parsimonious in that, unlike other agent-causal theories, it does not appeal to any unique and mysterious powers to explain how the free agent chooses. After setting out Anselm's original theory, Rogers defends and develops it by addressing a series of standard problems levelled against libertarianism. These include the problem of 'internalism--in that an agent is not the source of his original motivations, how can the structure of his choice ground his responsibility?; the problem of Frankfurt-style counterexamples--Do we really need open options to choose freely?; and the problem of luck--If nothing about an agent before he chooses explains his choice, then isn't the choice just dumb luck? (The Anselmian answer to this perennial criticism is especially innovative, proposing that the critic has the relationship between choices and character exactly backwards.) Finally, as a theory about self-creation, Anselmian Libertarianism must defend the tracing thesis, the claim that an agent can be responsible for character-determined choices, if he, himself, formed his character through earlier a se choices. Throughout, the book defends and exemplifies a new methodological suggestion: someone debating free will ought to make his background world view explicit. In the on-going debate over the possibility of human freedom and responsibility, Anselmian Libertarianism constitutes a new and plausible approach.

Book Self Organization in Electrochemical Systems II

Download or read book Self Organization in Electrochemical Systems II written by Marek Orlik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of two volumes offering the very first comprehensive treatise of self-organization and non-linear dynamics in electrochemical systems. The first volume covers general principles of self-organization as well as temporal instabilities. The content of both volumes is organized so that each description of a particular electrochemical system is preceded by an introduction to basic concepts of nonlinear dynamics, in order to help the reader unfamiliar with this discipline to understand at least fundamental concepts and the methods of stability analysis. The presentation of the systems is not limited to laboratory models but stretches out to real-life objects and processes, including systems of biological importance, such as neurons in living matter. Marek Orlik presents a comprehensive and consistent survey of the field.

Book Your Self Motivated Baby

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hands-on guide for communicating with babies in their first six months and nurturing their physical, social, and cognitive development, Your Self-Motivated Baby shows parents and other caregivers how to interact with very young infants and understand what they are expressing in their movements. Color photographs throughout the book show babies' motivation in play and how subtle interactions build bonding and encourage development. Following advice from author Beverly Stokes, a seasoned developmental movement educator, adults learn how to relate to babies and communicate effectively with them. Beverly Stokes makes it clear that preverbal babies are giving cues for caregiver participation very early on; it's up to us to try to understand them better. By communicating with babies sensitively in the first six months of their lives, we help them to establish the foundation for a healthy, confident, and joyful life. Beverly Stokes is a leader in developmental movement education whose book Amazing Babies Moving has been translated into five languages and is used together with its companion video series in university graduate and undergraduate programs in early childhood education, somatic psychology, and parenting programs internationally. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her partner, Dr. Louis Stokes.

Book The Shadow of the Tsunami

Download or read book The Shadow of the Tsunami written by Philip M. Bromberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-22 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During early development, every human being is exposed to the relative impact of relational trauma – disconfirmation of aspects of oneself as having legitimate existence in the world of others – in shaping both the capacity for spontaneous human relatedness and the relative vulnerability to "adult-onset trauma." To one degree or another, a wave of dysregulated affect – a dissociated "tsunami" – hits the immature mind, and if left relationally unprocessed leaves a fearful shadow that weakens future ability to regulate affect in an interpersonal context and reduces the capacity to trust, sometimes even experience, authentic human discourse. In his fascinating third book, Philip Bromberg deepens his inquiry into the nature of what is therapeutic about the therapeutic relationship: its capacity to move the psychoanalytic process along a path that, bit by bit, shrinks a patient's vulnerability to the pursuing shadow of affective destabilization while simultaneously increasing intersubjectivity. What takes places along this path does not happen because "this" led to "that," but because the path is its own destination – a joint achievement that underlies what is termed in the subtitle "the growth of the relational mind." Expanding the self-state perspective of Standing in the Spaces (1998) and Awakening the Dreamer (2006), Bromberg explores what he holds to be the two nonlinear but interlocking rewards of successful treatment – healing and growth. The psychoanalytic relationship is illuminated not as a medium for treating an illness but as an opportunity for two human beings to live together in the affectively enacted shadow of the past, allowing it to be cognitively symbolized by new cocreated experience that is processed by thought and language – freeing the patient's natural capacity to feel trust and joy as part of an enduring regulatory stability that permits life to be lived with creativity, love, interpersonal spontaneity, and a greater sense of meaning.
