Book excerpt: There is a comet named Twinkle that is sent on a trip through space that is not on its known path across the infinite universe. When Twinkle strays from its planned path, it starts an adventure that goes far beyond its normal limits. This is the start of this journey of discovery and revelation. As Twinkle travels through space, it comes across many strange and supernatural events. Each one adds a new layer to the story of its journey through space. At first, Twinkle comes into touch with a fog that glows in colors she doesn't understand. This fog, which is full of bright particles, pulls Twinkle to a secret part of the universe. There she finds a bright nebula that is full of life. The first person Twinkle meets is Zara, an alien being made of light. This starts a chain of bonds that will help and inform Twinkle's journey. Zara, an old and wise star, presents Luna to Twinkle and gives her a star map to help her find her way home and travel the universe. Zara cares about others and is smart. Twinkle sets out on an adventure through the exciting and dangerous cosmos with the map in hand and some new friends. Twinkle takes on every task with courage, from surviving a terrible cosmic storm to finding a lost and lonely planet. Along the way, she learns important lessons about friendship, strength, and how everything in the universe is connected. Twinkle's journey ends with a secret path lined with stardust that not only cuts down on the time it takes to get home but also shows how beautiful the sky really is. Every step of the way brings Twinkle and her friends closer to home and deeper into the mysteries of the world. It also teaches them about the power of working together and the endless possibilities for discovery. Twinkle triumphantly comes back, not only as a comet whose orbit is over, but also as a hero whose trip has changed him. Twinkle adds to the world by telling stories about faraway planets, amazing things in space, and friendships that can't be broken. The fact that it works shows that even the smallest of us can start the biggest adventures. People can find connections in the strangest places, be curious, and always be looking for home, no matter how far they move. This is what the story of The Lost Comet is all about. Chapter 1: When Twinkle Left Twinkle was the name of a very special comet that lived very far away in the universe. You had never seen a comet like Twinkle before. Twinkle wasn't just a piece of ice and rock hurtling through space; it was a live thing that was flying at very high speeds between the stars. Once every 76 years, Twinkle would go on a beautiful trip around the sun. It flew quickly by planets and moons, leaving behind a beautiful, bright light trail that could be seen for a long time. This wasn't just something pretty to look at; it was Twinkle's way of meeting all the other spaceships it met along the way. On the other hand, Twinkle had an unexpected event happen that she had never seen before. A rogue rock showed up out of the blue while it was moving through space. This moving rock was too fast for Twinkle to keep up with. They crashed into each other! Twinkle found herself going in a different direction after the blow. Twinkle had never seen anything like this before, and it was now in a part of space that no one had explored before. In every direction, there was nothing but darkness, and no planets or stars could be seen. Twinkle was scared and lost, and she didn't know what to do. It knew exactly where it was going because it had been going around the sun for hundreds of years. But after getting sidetracked, Twinkle had her first real taste of being alone. There was no map to show where it was, and there were no directional signs to show how to get back. Twinkle was far from the sun's warm light and the Earth's blue glow, in a place where comets had never been seen before. Even though bad things happened, Twinkle stayed positive. It knew the solar system was its home, so it had to find a way back. Twinkle was ready for a brand-new trip that would take it to parts of space that had never been explored before. Twinkle had already left, but it was still determined to come back, to glide through the solar system and leave a light trail. Twinkle's biggest trip so far started out of the blue, full of unknown challenges and the chance to meet new people and explore the vast universe. Chapter 2: The Strange Mist When Twinkle went back to its unexpected trip through the vast, dark space, something amazing caught its eye. The bright, warm mist went on for a long way in front of them. Mist like this doesn't happen very often. Twinkle couldn't have thought or seen the colors shimmering in it. These weren't the normal blues and greens that you'd see on Earth or Mars. As they moved and blended, these bright, fresh colors looked like they were alive. Twinkle, who was excited and interested, felt compelled to look into the mysterious fog. So, it turned around and went straight toward the bright mist, eager to find out what it was hiding. Twinkle looked like she was being held by the fog as it came closer, which was dancing softly around her. Twirl then saw something much more amazing. There were thousands or even millions of tiny, shimmering particles in the fog. While not being stars, they sparkled like little stars. Twinkle had been to the solar system more than once, but these particles were different from anything it had seen before. Each particle gave off its own unique glow, which added to the fog's enchanting brightness. Then something unexpected happened. For some reason, Twinkle felt like there was a light pull pulling it forward. It looked more like a friendly hand was pulling Twinkle deeper into the fog than like something scary or forced. Twinkle saw that the strange fog wasn't just a cloud of gas and particles, but a way to get to a secret part of the universe. A place that not many people knew about or had the chance to visit. She thought the fog had picked her and invited her on a unique trip to find out what was out there.

Book excerpt: In this eloquent plea for compassion and respect for all species, journalist and gardener Nancy Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.

Book Surviving on a Twinkle of Hope

Download or read book Surviving on a Twinkle of Hope written by Christine Vela and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of us have asked, “Why was I born into this family?” We understand that babies can’t choose who their family will be or the location of their birth. Life can be so unfair for many people. Some will have wounds that are too deep to heal on their own or even with medical help, no matter how many years have passed. The saying “Time heals all wounds” is not true; time lessens the memory and the pain slightly when we focus on other things. Some drink liquor or get high on drugs to cope with their sadness and disappointments in life. The only true help and deliverance I received was from asking Jesus to come dwell in my heart and set me free from the chains of bondage found in sin.

Book Riding Rockets

Download or read book Riding Rockets written by Mike Mullane and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-02-06 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected as a Mission Specialist in 1978 in the first group of shuttle astronauts, Mike Mullane completed three missions and logged 356 hours aboard the Discovery and Atlantis shuttles. It was a dream come true. As a boy, Mullane could only read about space travel in science fiction, but the launch of Sputnik changed all that. Space flight became a possible dream and Mike Mullane set out to make it come true. In this absorbing memoir, Mullane gives the first-ever look into the often hilarious, sometime volatile dynamics of space shuttle astronauts - a class that included Vietnam War veterans, feminists, and propeller-headed scientists. With unprecedented candour, Mullane describes the chilling fear and unparalleled joy of space flight. As his career centred around the Challenger disaster, Mullane also recounts the heartache of burying his friends and colleagues. And he pulls no punches as he reveals the ins and outs of NASA, frank in his criticisms of the agency. A blast from start to finish, Riding Rockets is a straight-from-the-gut account of what it means to be an astronaut, just in time for this latest generation of stargazers.

Book Routledge Handbook of Gender and Water Governance

Download or read book Routledge Handbook of Gender and Water Governance written by Tatiana Acevedo-Guerrero and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-01 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides a comprehensive overview of the field of gender and water governance, exploring how the use, management and knowledge of water resources, services and the water environment are deeply gendered. In water there is a recognized gender gap between water responsibilities and water rights and bridging this gap is likely to help achieve not just goals of equity but also those of sustainability. Building on a rich legacy of feminist water scholarship, the Routledge Handbook of Gender and Water Governance is a collection of reflections and studies that can be used as a prismatic lens into a thriving and ever proliferating array of feminist water studies. It provides a clear testimony of how hydrofeminism has evolved from rather instrumental gender and water studies to scholarship that uses feminist tools to pry open, critically reflect on and formulate alternatives to water development-as-usual. The book also shows how the community of feminists interested in studying water has diversified and expanded, from often white female scholars studying projects and gender relations in the so-called Global South, to a varied mix of scholars and activists theorizing from diverse geographical and political locations – prominently including the body. It is organized into five interconnected parts: Part I: Positionality and embodied waters Part II: Revisiting water debates: diplomacy, security, justice and heritage Part III: Sanitation stories Part IV: Precarious livelihoods Part V: New feminist futures Each of these parts brings out the gendered nature of water, shedding light on the often neglected care and unpaid labour of women and its relationship with extractivism and socioeconomic inequalities. The overall aim of the handbook is to apply social science insights to water governance challenges, creating synergies and linkages between different disciplines and scientific domains. The Routledge Handbook of Gender and Water Governance is essential reading for students, scholars and professionals interested in water governance, water security, health and sanitation, gender studies and sustainable development more broadly.

Book Storytelling in Early Childhood

Download or read book Storytelling in Early Childhood written by Teresa Cremin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storytelling in Early Childhood is a captivating book which explores the multiple dimensions of storytelling and story acting and shows how they enrich language and literacy learning in the early years. Foregrounding the power of children’s own stories in the early and primary years, it provides evidence that storytelling and story acting, a pedagogic approach first developed by Vivian Gussin Paley, affords rich opportunities to foster learning within a play-based and language-rich curriculum. The book explores a number of themes and topics, including: the role of imaginary play and its dynamic relationship to narrative; how socially situated symbolic actions enrich the emotional, cognitive and social development of children; how the interrelated practices of storytelling and dramatisation enhance language and literacy learning, and contribute to an inclusive classroom culture; the challenges practitioners face in aligning their understanding of child literacy and learning with a narrow, mandated curriculum which focuses on measurable outcomes. Driven by an international approach and based on new empirical studies, this volume further advances the field, offering new theoretical and practical analyses of storytelling and story acting from complementary disciplinary perspectives. This book is a potent and engaging read for anyone intrigued by Paley’s storytelling and story acting curriculum, as well as those practitioners and students with a vested interest in early years literacy and language learning. With contributions from Vivian Gussin Paley, Patricia ‘Patsy‘ Cooper, Dorothy Faulkner, Natalia Kucirkova, Gillian Dowley McNamee and Ageliki Nicolopoulou.
