Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty Years in Khama's Country: And Pioneering Among the Batauana of Lake Ngami On one of the first days of the year 1894 a cable message flashed from England's frost-bound shores, to these lying in the rich glow of midsummer radiance, the unexpected tidings that the Rev. J. D. Hepburn "was not," for God had taken him. Henceforth, to our earth-holden ears, the living voice of "Khama's friend" is for ever silenced. Download or read book Twenty nine Years in the West Indies and Central Africa written by The Rev Hope Masterton Wadell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1970. This vivid account of the missionary work of the Rev. Hope Masterton Waddell in the West Indies and Central Africa was first published in 1863. During his sixteen years in Jamaica he witnessed the slave revolt and the aftermath of the abolition of slavery. The mission helped former slaves adapt to freedom in new communities. In 1846 he left Jamaica for Calabar in West Africa (now part of Nigeria), and his narrative is one of the best European accounts of pre-colonial Africa. The mission was concerned with ending local practices such as polygamy, human sacrifice and witchcraft, and Waddell formed a close relationship with King Eyo. The book gives considerable detail about the history and culture of the area, as well as on the work of the mission. His work in Calabar is still commemorated there in the Hope Waddell Training Institute, Duke Town.

Download or read book Debility and the Moral Imagination in Botswana written by Julie Livingston and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-20 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the rush to development in Botswana, and Africa more generally, changes in work, diet, and medical care have resulted in escalating experiences of chronic illness, debilitating disease, and accident. Debility and the Moral Imagination in Botswana documents how transformations wrought by colonialism, independence, industrialization, and development have effected changes in bodily life and perceptions of health, illness, and debility. In this intimate and powerful book, Julie Livingston explores the lives of debilitated persons, their caregivers, the medical and social networks of caring, and methods that communities have adopted for promoting well-being. Livingston traces how Tswana medical thought and practice have become intertwined with Western bio-medical ideas and techniques. By focusing on experiences and meanings of illness and bodily misfortune, Livingston sheds light on the complexities of the current HIV/AIDS epidemic and places it in context with a long and complex history of impairment and debility. This book presents practical and thoughtful responses to physical misfortune and offers an understanding of the complex dynamic between social change and suffering.

Download or read book Multiple Secularities Beyond the West written by Marian Burchardt and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions of secularity and modernity have become globalized, but most studies still focus on the West. This volume breaks new ground by comparatively exploring developments in five areas of the world, some of which were hitherto situated at the margins of international scholarly discussions: Africa, the Arab World, East Asia, South Asia, and Central and Eastern Europe. In theoretical terms, the book examines three key dimensions of modern secularity: historical pathways, cultural meanings, and global entanglements of secular formations. The contributions show how differences in these dimensions are linked to specific histories of religious and ethnic diversity, processes of state-formation and nation-building. They also reveal how secularities are critically shaped through civilizational encounters, processes of globalization, colonial conquest, and missionary movements, and how entanglements between different territorially grounded notions of secularity or between local cultures and transnational secular arenas unfold over time.
